We are Currently 15th in Total Defense

The Defense has looked significantly more solid with Manny's increased involvement (last few games).

The performance on D was woeful against Va Tech, especially in the first quarter (even factoring in all those turnovers). 42 points surrendered to that team was shocking. That's why Manny increased his involvement.

If Baker is retained, Manny has to remain heavily involved. Defense looks night & day better with Manny's involvement.

Areas for improvement are sacking the QB and form tackling/tackling more consistently.

Defense is far from perfect but it's the least of our problems.

aint that some ****.webp

And ya'll want Baker fired? I understand the UNC debacle but our defense is statistically better than Alabama, Oregon, LSU and UF three quarters into the season

We are 4-4 and suck.

Alabama and LSU would beat us so bad the refs might suggest a running clock. We would be their Savannah State.

Oregon likely would as well, but Mario might call off the dogs.

UF would beat us by 21 if we played played next Saturday.

I hate these stats keep horrible coordinators in jobs. This stat is *** because our schedule sucks and if you watch a game you know this defense is not that good. They also almost always told when you need them

We all can see that this is not a world-beating defense - no matter what the stats say, it doesn't pass the eyeball test. However, you do have to admit that this defense has played "well enough" to win all but one game so far, the one where it inexplicably could not keep a terrible VT team out of the end zone.

All the other games, we win, even if we just had a middle-of-the-road offense.

The D is not an elite unit but they are good and getting better. They have three games without allowing a touchdown.

Does that happen to coincide with starting Rousseau? Gotta make you wonder how big of an impact that kid could have had in the games they didn't play him much... Another what if.

Not buying that cause I actually watch/attend our games and other CFB games also. We have plenty of talent but we can't tackle for ****, and we get outplayed by any team with a mediocre gameplan. Pitt will make us forgetful. But ****, they gift wrapped that game for us. I'm tired of turning the channel and seeing real offenses and defenses play on Saturdays.

Whats our record though thats the most important stat

And we havent played a good offense yet our schedule is trash every year

Honest question here. Which of the following do you think describes you:

1) I choose not to better inform myself using the immense amount of information that is out there in today's world of college football, including both aggregated metrics and play-by-play-level data. To the extent I need to educate myself on how to analyze and contextualize data, I willingly choose not to do so.

2) I believe myself to be intellectually incapable, at this point in my life, of understanding the new and improved ways of assessing on-field performance in college football.

You have to fall into one of those two camps. Otherwise you wouldn't say the nonsense you just said.

BTW, the smart people who have made #1 possible, are aware of "what's our record though that's the most important stat" and "we haven't played a good offense yet". If you were to put in the effort to look into it, you would realize that the very existence of the metrics referred in bullet #1 is in large part driven by explaining how on-field performance by individual players and units contributes to team success, and how to adjust performance for strength of schedule.

Just was looking at where we finished the season.

Miami finished 13th in CFB. A very long way from the coach D days. But still not really satisfied with their situational awareness as a defense. That reflects in the 3rd and 4th down rankings. They couldn’t stay off the fi

Im a bit surprised Miami finished 13th overall total defense.

12th in yards allowed.
12th in yards per play.
42nd in 3rd down conversion defense
123rd out 130 in 4th down defense.
13th in first down defense
41st in Red Zone Defense
Only had 10 INTs as a team
17th in rush defense.
23rd in scoring defense
29th in pass Defense
6th in sacks.

red zone D, 3rd and 4th down D need to greatly improve this year. They potentially can. I think we have the pieces.

Red zone defense was much better after VT. 3rd down defense and red zone defense surely need to be tightened up.

For the 1200th time, the defense is fine. Can it improve....should we expect better? Of course, always. But give me the 12th ranked ANYTHING on offense and this team can sleepwalk to Charlotte every single year.

Rushing D if I remember correctly was really good then dropped at the end? Either way we got gaped to end the year.. bad taste

Oh **** yeah don’t care if it’s passing/rushing or total offense we rolling into Charlotte with that.

In 2018, Miami was the best in CFB in 3rd down defense, if I'm not mistaken. So Diaz has proven he can do it.

yeah. I mean for inexperienced secondary we did alright.

big question marks are the LBs.

Im cool with the DL and secondary we have coming back

Just remember, and I know this very well b/c I obliterated a former thread regarding No D....this is when my O&G started to crack:

In 2015, Miami finished w the 14th ranked total defense, and No D kept saying his scheme worked b/c look at our total defense.

Total defense in CFB is one of the more deceiving stats ever.

Oh yeah I agree with that fasho. I mean we didn’t play like a top defense. Top defenses don’t go 6-7 no matter how bad the offense is.
