Upon Further Review- Michigan State

I am 100% sure this board could run the program better than Blake, Manny and their band of clowns. Every week “fans on a message board” find issues and solve problems the coaches can’t?

There is zero chance Manny watches film on his own defense, bc if he did and saw what we just saw, he would resign. He wouldn’t survive 2 minutes in the room with Lance.

Been saying it for awhile now Manny's true calling is as a high level analyst. He's good at knowing teams tendencies and drawing up creative blitzes but as a DC or Headcoach he gets out of hand with it. He needs a filter. For my hardcore wrestling fans on here Manny is Vince Russo without Vince McMahon to filter his crazy ideas.

my hope was Howell will struggle with his new receivers

turns out, he struggled. for a week

He’s a really good player and he’s got a really good OC.

However, if we’re being totally transparent, what you said is correct. They averaged 5.62 a play against VT. Then 8.55 against Georgia State and a whopping 10.28 last week against UVA. So, 3 weeks in, 1 of those games coming against a Sun Belt team that gave up 43 to Army, they’re averaging over 8.2 a play. But they did struggle against VT.

You said it but I’m saying it again… UNC is going to beat us very badly.. again. Missing 5 skill players that went on to the NFL. Just the system beats us. Trying to look at other ACC backs and schemes that will expose us on the boundary

Virginia can do it too but they don’t have any talent at RB. So we may escape them. But no way Manny survives another 50 burger to UNC especially when we can’t score either.

As always, thank you Lance. I couldn’t stomach reading the entire play by play breakdown. But did skip down to the conclusion. Gif says it all

It is unassailable that they are playing favorites. There is absolutely no way the coaches at the level of Miami are worse at grading film that I am, so they cannot possibly believe the players out there are getting the job done.

The missed tackles. My goodness, it is almost unbelievable what I'm seeing.
I make the mistake at work often of not mentioning something that is clear as day to me and assume top management sees it. The coaches could be so caught up in something else (recruiting as an example) that they miss the basics.

Thank you for your painstaking work Lance. And I do mean “pain” staking work.
But in all honesty i was too disgusted after about the 5th defensive breakdown to even go on. Being a UM fan this year is painful. Knowing football the way you do must make this exercise feel like torture.

Few things I would take out of this outside of the obvious:

*There is NO WAY ON GODS GREEN EARTH I would let anyone stay for a 6th year and get a free masters degree again unless you are a pivotal part of our success. And that must be proven coming out of Spring ball. Whether Manny is here or not that needs to end. Staying here a 6th year should be a privilege and not just handed out because you feel sorry for kids and want to give them one last ride on the house. The whole #Letsrunitback needs to end. We have ALOT of kids coming up who might be asking for a 6th year next year and there is no way I allow it. (Mallory, Nesta, Ivey, Donaldson, Hall are a few that I think would be bold enough to ask for it and should be denied....Luckily, the Jennings, Wiggins, Popes of the world wont have the balls to even think about asking)

*Alot of guys need to sit and be told its over for them barring injury to a person ahead of them. (Carter, McCloud, Miller come to mind immediately. I would say Mallory but our TE depth is so horrible we might not have a choice but he should be told he is TE #2 now)

Thanks for that. I intended to say I'd like to see more max protect and keep the RB in to block more often. They never utilize the RB as a check-down, so it's a waste in most cases. In fact, usually the RB is just running past the blitzer as he tries to get into a route.

I purposefully do not watch Roman's video breakdowns because I don't want to taint what I'm doing, but I do believe he's pointed out how they use their RB as a check-down will not work for the QB. As a former QB, he has good insight into why they wouldn't actually look there.

I notice the check down seemed to be open during the game. I figured King was just trying to push the ball downfield. Our rb usually blocks, so he needed reps to get used to coming back down. I have to find what Roman said. It would good to know how the routes or defense make it unlikely the Qb will find the rb.

Do you think this is a directive from Manny? I can't imagine all the assistant coaches are that stupid where they won't play the younger players much more. I've asked this several time on here but people either don't respond or the slurpers say I'm crazy. I'm convinced this is the case, just curious what you think.

Keep in mind Manny's time as DC for Texas under Mack Brown. Manny introduced THUD at Texas and then they played BYU on national tv and were embarrassed. Mack fired Manny after that game (mid-season). Manny using THUD at Miami shows his stubbornness and unwillingness to change. It doesn't work and the soft play of our defense shows that it doesn't work. Things will not get better because you can't wait until in season to make changes. It has to be taught and covered in spring and in fall camp.

Holy **** that's depressing. Depending on what other games are on while we're playing, I may not watch Miami play again this season.

This staff has to go. They are not even teaching the basics and practicing half speed. That tells me that Manny wants to be the players best friend and not make them work to get better.
This was evident day one when he held a WWE style entrance after he was hired, did a slip and slide after a pathetic win, smoked cigars after beating the worst FSU team in their program history and so on.
The guy is a straight up fraud.

As a person who used to live in the world, there is no doubt they are humans. When humans get put into a stressful spot- say trying to save ones job- they tend to retreat to a place of comfort. Coaches are comfortable with players they know. They believe they will do what they are supposed to do and since they are great coaches, if the player just does what they're supposed to do, it'll work because they're such great coaches.

I've yet to meet a coach who doesn't think he's a great coach.

As such, it's just safety. It's flawed logic, but humans tend to not be logical in my experience. So yes, I do believe it is a tendency to play experience from coaches.

Also, keep in mind, every coach in the world will play the experienced guy if it is close for the reason that it tends to keep the peace better. An experienced player is close to a young player and the young player plays, it is more likely to lead to the experienced player leaving the team or being disgruntled than the younger player because that is how the hierarchy tends to work.

This is all my view, my perspective, and my opinion.

Nah, he'll see guys missing tackles or choosing the wrong gap and will say to himself "I had the right play call called, they just didn't execute" and proceed to harp on that. What he's missing and has no idea how to fix is why it's happening.

You’re exactly right, He doesn’t know how to fix it. But I meant that as saying it’s easily proved why it won’t work. Him not understanding that is his main problem. Well that and his ego that gets in the way of seeing it.

Lance, this coaching staff and the tape they are putting on film is undeserving of your (as always) excellent analysis. Please do something more productive with your time as you deserve better than this trash.
