Tom Herman (merged with Herman head coach candidate threads)

The real difference I keeps hitting on is Texas coaches are gonna try to do whatever to keep their studs in Texas no matter where they play. And they also aren’t handlers. It seem in south Florida a lot of those guys and programs are selling their guys to the highest bidder if they can and you almost can’t recruit a kid if you don’t go through them
UT ain't paying?

A&M ain't paying?

OU and Okie State ain't paying?

****, Baylor with that national championship basketball team and TCU ain't paying?

"Handlers" aren't some shady creatures unique to SoFla, especially with the off-season 7-on-7 circuit exploding in the last decade.

Not sure Texas high school coaches still have the clout they once enjoyed.

Kids EVERYWHERE are getting paid if they so choose

Ummm... Im dense and you think straw arguments are somehow valid come backs...

I guess you think Whoopi Goldberg would be a great option because she has never coached at a good school.

Stoops has no offense and has had almost zero success at Kentucky.

Dave Clawson has never even won 9 games... in the same division as Dino Babers who has won 10 games.

Hugh Freeze won 10 games once in a p5 conference and he has more vacated wins than Miami does itself.

There is zero proof that any of these guys would win or even be a good fit here. Zero... but please smart guys impress us with your illustrious knowledge.

Kentucky has had 3 10 win seasons in their history, Mark Stoops has one of them

The other was Bear Bryant in 1952, the other in 1977. Sorry you don’t want to use context when discussing something

Clawson took Fordham from 0 wins to 10, Richmond from 3 wins to 11, Bowling Green to 10, and now has Wake poised to go from 2, 4 from the previous year he took over to 10+ this year.

Wake Forest has one season since 1888 where they won more than 9 games but you’re making 10 wins a case for a coach being good when the school has had 1 10 win season in school history

Yeah you are dense and an idiot

A 15-year old recipe for success am I right? You forgot all the bad that makes it difficult to get those recruits

Difficult? Sure. But we've consistently recruited as the 2nd or 3rd best team in the conference, with much lower on-field results.

Any coach you're going to hire is going to be an egomaniac (they all are) who will think he can do even better than that, and coach them up better.

I know it's fun and easy to **** all over the program right now. But it's still an alluring job, IF (AND THIS IS A GIGANTIC IF) but IF you pony up money. At $4M - $5M a year, it's an alluring job. I'm not even going to list all the positives, it'd take too long. Yes, there are certainly negatives. But this thinking that if you actually invest in the program that you can't attract a coach worth a **** is ridiculous. Of course you can. But you have to invest. You can't make WalMart hires anymore.

“can we stop hiring dudes that failed at other programs.”

What dudes?

Manny was our DC
Golden didn’t fail at temple.
Shannon was our DC
Coker was our OC
Butch was NFL
It should have said, “stop hiring coaches from THIS failed program.”

I wouldn’t mind Herman unless Freeze, stoops, Kidfen, Clawson, Clark and Doereen said no

The paying is happening everywhere. The “handlers” the way it is in south Florida is not. Remember that situation with the palmetto kids just last cycle? That doesn’t happen in Texas

Herman had the #25 (new hire), #3, #3, #8 and #15 (fired year) classes at UT. He can recruit for sure. Also, I believe by Texas law, College coaches have to go through the HS coaches when recruiting players. Obviously there’s still handlers out there, but relationship building is huge here in Texas.

Just a reminder, Urban Meyer was offered a blank check to coach UT, he talked it over with Jimmy Johnson and JJ recommended he pass on Texas for the NFL . Why would the GOAT tell Meyer to avoid UT? Because JJ knows that the Texas job comes with a lot of non football bullish!t that would drive most coaches crazy.

The fact that Herman wasn't more successful at Texas shouldn't be weighed that heavily or used a metric for his coaching ability. As I and others have pointed out many times, despite having unlimited resources and the ability to buy any recruit in the country, they have a grand total of 1 championship since 1970, and it only happened because they had a once in a generation talent at QB. There is something systemically wrong at Texas (and it has a lot to do with the boosters).

It's kind of interesting too that critics are calling Herman's tenure a failure when he went 10-4 there in his 2nd season, yet these same critics say we need an experienced coach like Richt because he gave Miami its best season in years, (which happened to be a 1 10 win season). Worth pointing out that Herman took over a team that had gone 6-7, 5-7, 5-7 in the 3 years before his arrival, and in his second season he got them to double digit wins.

The thing that should be weighed a lot is recruiting. On paper, he looks like a good recruiter. Some say he was arrogant and burned bridges. Now whether it was arrogance or that he balked at having to pay high school coaches (I think it's safe to say they came to expect some extra consideration from Texas when sending recruits there) is something that the insiders will have to speak to. If it's the latter, then it isn't a problem because the coaches in S Fl have their hands out and even if they get their beaks wet, they will still stab UM in the back and send recruits to FSU or UF. At least in Texas a coach could rely on the fact that if a HS coach got paid, he wasn't going to send a recruit to TAMU or Texas Tech.

What's the difference if it's some dude on the corner or a high school coach with a P.E. degree, a weekly radio show and an outsized ego brokering under-the-table payments?

Tom Herman.

I’m not sure why people keep pumping this guy up.

Can we stop hiring dudes that failed at other schools, especially a prominent program like Texas?

Listen, years ago I thought Herman was going to be a Texas coaching legend, but that never materialized.

This university needs to stop taking chances. For once, pony up the money to hire a big-name coach with a proven track record. Sell them on leading a team playing in the easiest division in Power 5 CFB

It can be done. Our fans are too used to settling for mediocrity.
He failed because Texas is poisoned. He may fail here to cause we are poisoned up top.
