Tom Herman (merged with Herman head coach candidate threads)

It’s not terrible but San Marcos and Texas state are RIGHT there and for a teenage football player that’s really where you want to be
Have you ever been to Texas? Just curious bc your Austin comments I’ve never heard from anyone in the state, ever.

Too much booster influence. You have it at other schools no doubt, but not to the level that Texas has.
I know we gripe a lot about money here when it comes to Canes football but maybe they have too much of a good thing. Texas has so much money that they have a separate endowment specifically for their athletic department where they funnel the millions IN PROFIT they get every year. And that money just grows and grows. My brother manages mid 8 figures of Texas athletic money at his hedge fund in NYC. Nuts.

thank you for remembering cause these dudes remember what fits their own weird narrative. I was ecstatic about the big time kids coming on board, we need more to take that next step or leap into "ok we are for real now". A Mason Smith and T2 do that if they both chose us, those two coming means nothing can stop whats going to happen.
We should also be careful going forward not to hire guys who we will be uncomfortable firing. The cb situation is ridiculous. Figure out your staff with a bit more planning.

Lol I’m from Houston. Inner city Houston. None of us want to go to Austin in my personal experience. We never looked at it as a party school we always thought Texas state was that. Of course you wouldn’t go to Texas state over UT as a football player but yeah.

Yea u have to be willing to have the personality to fire Ed reed himself or anyone the program loves. A HC has to be willing to make tough decisions...I give MD props for Enos and those other guys but firing some defensive staff would be a huge big dik boss move.

It shows how much of a crap shoot hiring a coach is. Do you hire an assistant from a top staff? What if he can’t handle being the boss and all of the sudden isn’t a great coach when he doesn’t have the most talented team? Do you hire a small school guy? It can be a lot tougher to win at a P5 school when the competition is tougher and the fan bases have shorter patience.

There’s a reason why so few coaches have long term success. Every flavor of the week coach is only a year or two away from the hot seat.

facts!

look at Herman and Frost both were the hottest names in coaching a few years back and neither has come close to having the type of success they had at smaller schools.

Frost made a huge mistake as far as style and culture fit. I understand he’s a Nebraska alum, but there was no way he was gonna get the types of players he got at UCF. He would’ve been better off at UF, IMO

They need to use the same model that Wisconsin and Iowa use. Frost should have known that he needed to change things up when he moved from UCF to Nebraska.

Thompson was my Heisman guy preseason, no idea why they tried to bench him.

On the Herman front, I’d definitely have him on our short list. Boosters meddled at Texas and cared more about his stance on Eyes of Texas than the football. Lost 3 one score games last year, two against Top 10 teams (OU and Iowa State).

Man has to be hungry to get back in the big boy seat and run his own team. Already had some fire in him and I would think he would love to get that Texas taste out his mouth.. Would be interesting how he would put a staff together especially on the defensive side.
If Manny does go, he’s one of the dark horse candidates.

PROS

Recruiter / QB guy

Has proven he can at least be solid at a P5 school after dominating G5, so less risky than someone like Napier

Chip on his shoulder

Has done it in a big city

CONS

OL at Texas sucked (has been an issue there regardless of coach for a long time)

Teams came out flat too often

He recruited all of the pieces of this team that are making a difference in this game.

He’d just have to hire the right defensive coordinator from the start instead of trying to fix it his last year. Todd Orlando is not a good DC.

He won and lost a ton of close games at Texas. Didn’t do much blowing teams out and ultimately got fired because he lost close games.

You were spot on about Thompson, I remember you beating the drum on this guy years and years ago during that recruiting cycle.
He set state records in High school at Southmoore Oklahoma...

Kid was an absolute monster in HS.

I live in Austin and a good buddy of mine was on his staff here. He recruited at a really high level and they had no trouble putting points up. As @JayCane20 said, look at Texas' roster today if you want a preview of the talent he can assemble. Todd Orlando was really really bad but they struggled on defense last year with a new DC as well and just couldn't get over the hump in close games.

Another big reason why they moved on is his personality. He's a gigantic douchebag who never really endeared himself to the UT/Austin community. That said, he and his wife are fairly high brow people so CG might be a better for them culturally.

I would not mind if Herman came here. Texas isn't for everyone. An hopefully he has learned from having a big job and will take those experiences with at his next job. An I think he could recruit some great players here.
