this game is starting to feel like last year's game vs. uf

This game will also tell us if our wr room can compete with a top DB room. Won’t see a better one all year. Our room will perform when the comp gets easier but this is a good measuring stick.
a guy on twitter ... i think @k9cane ... pointed out that nobody knew andre johnson or kevin beard prior to their breakout season ... now i'm not comparing any of our guys to a HOF'er, but this is how it works, guys wait their turn, perform during the offseason, and show out ... lofton waited his turn, jojo waited his turn, toney came and jumped the line ... i'm excited to see them play

fair points and definitely agree in terms of your secondary, you guys have nice pieces

i think when we get into matching up personnel units you lose me as we got to see your qb do it ... you can create ideal matchups all day, can he stand in there, read it, and deliver it .... on a big stage, in front of +50,000, at night, in the heat ...
Yeah, we're praying he can. We obviously have no idea what Carr is going to be and this is clearly not a good opening game for him.

The reason there is hope among ND faithful is because the reports on Carr are:
1) Elite Arm
2) High IQ on Xs and Os
3) Good leader
4) Very accurate

But the reports also say he's a massive risk taker. This is what led to interceptions during camp. He's always pressing. That scares me to death in this game.

The other thing I don't think ND fans are talking enough about is, communication. Carr has never had to rely on a radio in his helmet in front of a wild crowd. We can't afford a ton of pre-snap penalties that force a 3rd & 8 or 2nd & 13 scenario.

This is my biggest concern. It could end up being a good or even great room, and struggle in game 1 against this secondary. Both can be true.

They need to do enough, and DEs need to eat to make sure they’re not doing anything with their passing game.

Toney might just be that dude as a relatively unknown freshman - I don't know. I'm just saying the data would suggest the probability is low.

The Kevin Beard callout is odd - he never balled out in college. Andre Johnson had his big breakout in his third season.

I can't tell what's going to happen the rest of the season but I firmly believe we beat the brakes off of ND.

speaking more to the fact that prior to that year neither guy had played meaningful snaps ... our receivers were santana moss and reggie wayne ... no one had really heard of johnson, beard, or shockey, until they did ... beard was a solid 3/4 option, not a star, but he had moments

i also think the national media and most in general are really underestimating the play and effect of riley leornard ... i watch game tape and his fingerprints are all over the gameplan ... he was a tough runner (900yds 17tds), he was your short yardage back and goal line back ... he covered mistakes on the oline with ability to scramble ... he held linebackers and defensive ends a second longer allowing love and price to catch running lanes ... that's gone now ... and you replaced it with a guy that hasn't thrown a college pass and threw 24tds and 9int in highschool ... idk, just a big leap for me

Insane statement, they’re a better team on paper than us.

They have the clear advantage at RB, LB, S. Lean WR as their advantage, more proven bodies with college production at the P4 level.

It’s tight with OL, CB and DT. I’ll even give us TE, even though that’s pretty tight as well.

We have the advantage at QB and DE.

Last year, everyone knew UF was all talk with glaring holes on both sides of the ball. This ND team is not only better coached, but they have much better overall talent than that UF team did.

once you get past name and the bias ... and when you get down to man on man, unit vs unit ... i don't see all these advantages the media is suggesting ...
While I might not disagree about it being a huge mismatch we'd be lying to ourselves if we didn't admit certain areas they definitely on paper atleast have an advantage. While our running game is a strength so is their linebacker and db play. If they slow our running game down we better hope we can counter by slowing down theirs. The RB play and oline they have is legit & stopping it relies entirely on our front 7. If we have any issues with that it's gonna be a long long day. I'd imagine they are coming into the game thinking they'll catch us off guard going up tempo with Carr. If that's not the game plan I'd have to assume they would've went with the running QB. If we slow down run game and make them one dimensional I'm good with a true freshman shooting his ****.

why safety ... their top tackler went to the league?
why linebacker ... their top tackler at the position also went to the league?
why dt? their top tackler/sack guy at the position went to the league?

Sure, but simply from a statistical view point, we out gained every opponent we played last year. Meanwhile, ND found ways to win games they shouldn't have won. Louisville and USC were 2 games that jump out.

Let's not lose the turnover battle or give them something easy on special teams. We win if we don't beat ourselves.
They were up by two scores going into the fourth in both games...

UF stunk. I said it all offseason and it was obvious early.

Notre Dame is a much more legitimate operation.
When you are have a strong OL and have a strong back 7 (DBs and LBs) that all national high end caliber, its makes a big difference.

UF OL was junk going into our game, and more concerned about a strong DEF with the question mark of Cam Ward a just the recent history still tainting us.

This is just going to an outright game vs two, at minimum top 15 come year end, teams beating up on each other.

Gonna come down to fundamental's, blocking, tackling and the turnovers.

yes, that was me. Coming into that 2001 season, Andre Johnson had 5 career grabs, Kevin Beard had zero(IIRC) and it was Daryl Jones was the leader with around 28 catches. But by that point of Butch's tenure, he had evaluated, recruited and then developed to a point where there was a bit of automatic pilot to that position (and all the rest of the squad)

Another example, after the legendary 'Bomb Squad' WR unit (Irvin, Perriman and Blades) left, in 88 guys who were way less heralded then that group and the eventual 'Ruthless Posse', the likes of Dale Dawkins and Andre Brown became very solid and productive wide recievers and the Miami offense kept on moving

This is what a good program does -- it always maintains a certain floor
