There has always been a talent gap

Now we actually see it on the field. We used to lose to this garbage. Miami looked motivated, fresh and fast. The tackling and overall intensity was there from the beginning, even with some early rust. We are a long way from the bye-week curse.

- There are 8 games in a normal ACC schedule. This is the second time we’ve gone 7-1 since joining the ACC. That’s twice in 15 years. The other time we did it (2017), our coach won Coach of the Year. Manny deserves credit for fixing a lot of problems in a short amount of time.

- The OL has come a long way. They couldn’t block Duke for the past two years. Now, it’s a mismatch for us. Navaughn Donaldson blocked out the sun on Cam's touchdown run. Hopefully that is a confidence-builder on his road to fitness.

- Corey Flagg finds the football. I don’t know what he runs in the forty, but he is a sideline-to-sideline player.

- I never understood the rush to bury Cam Harris. The young guys are super talents, but Cam puts up the best numbers and makes the most explosive runs. On the flip side, the benching seems to have motivated him.

- Keontra Smith is finally flashing as a fast and physical player. He is someone who looks like a Miami defender.

- Brevin and Mallory played a bunch of snaps together and it looked good. When the ball gets to the perimeter, it helps to have a big TE blocking in space and dominating his matchup against a DB.

- Congratulations to @waynejr31. Happy to see Steed play well and force a fumble after all that he’s overcome. He could have easily quit after the second ACL but he is a true Cane.

- Marcus Clarke is flashing. I’ve heard the staff is very high on his speed and ball skills, but I likehow he tackled. He made several tough plays on kickoff and defense.

- Miami used to have the most athletic DTs in the nation. When you see Elijah Roberts force a fumble on a kickoff, it gives you hope we can get there again.

- I loved the decision to kick those FGs. Get Borregales’s confidence back and bury Duke. To quote the great @The Franchise, class is for Mr. Peanut with the top hat and the cane. Miami runs up the score.

- Tirek Austin-Cave and Jalen Rivers got meaningful run. TAC in particular looked explosive and thicker than advertised. Losing the spring really hurt him but his upside is huge.

- Jaelan Phillips is a first rounder. His confidence is sky-high and he is a supreme talent. Roche isn’t that kind of freak but he’s a **** of a college player. Both are great examples to sell in the Portal.

- The only downer was TVD being unavailable. We should make an effort to play him against Georgia Tech if possible.

- Overall, it was a blast to watch. Duke has been the most miserable game of the season lately and this was different. 8-1.

Love this post...

Am I the only one on this site who thinks the defense is better with Steed on the field? He and Flagg played well together and look to me like the 2 most instinctual LB’s. Neither one ever looks lost of uncomfortable. Those 2 diagnose plays faster than the others. I want Steed on the field. Next week will be a test with 8&25 running the ball.

Also, LOVED seeing Robert’s on that KO! He’s gonna be a BLAST to watch over the next few years.

Congrats to the parents of the 2 Canes I singled out. I know they post here. Well done.

TAC is another one to watch. Our LB core is getting better

Go Canes!

Yeah for the last 10 years the gap at QB has been in Duke's favor. Which is absolutely pathetic

Phillips v. Rousseau is a legit discussion but I think you're selling GR15 a bit short. He finished a lot of his sacks that other players wouldn't because of his length and change of direction. Those sacks on Pickett last year where he retraced showed how much ground he can cover. He also has a unique ability to bend as a tackler given his 6'7 frame. I've seen him take down guys at waist level in the open field.

Dude is like a Teradactyl i would absolutely hate having to block him.

Jason Pierre Paul with a tad more athleticism.

Hope he falls so the dolphins could use a 1st rounder on him.

Why does everyone say that? When they played their backup QB had over 400 yards. So by your logic Lawrence will have 800 yards passing in order to be able to destroy ND.
The biggest issue for Clemson in the ND game was not having Skalski and Jones their 2 starting line backers.

Would the phins play Rousseau at an OLB spot in their scheme?

Oline has a looong way to go.. I couldnt imagine what we would do with actual good oline, we dropped 40+ and 500 yards + but oline still feels like its holding us back, lol.. Need alot of work, I hope we can get Donaldson to have offseason of lifetime and we can build off that..

We will also miss Jarrid, he is a godsend all season. The guy has quieted the RT spot to point you dont even realize how well he has played, he is finesse tackle and wont be confused as road grader but in pass pro he is a prototype.. One of our most valuable players..
Where's Jarrid going?

Phillips does it all. He creates knockback against the run, he sets the edge and shuts down zone mesh plays, and now he has an ****nal of pass rush moves including spins to beat double teams, outside swipe moves, bullrush, etc.

You could put Phillips on an NFL field right now and he'd belong. Rousseau would be exposed badly in the same circumstance. He shrinks when you run at him and he doesn't have any juice as an edge rusher. Sack stats are a bad way to evaluate defensive players. Even Roche is a more consistent, more complete player who grades out higher.

JPP has get-off and bend that Rousseau can't match. Campbell is a physical technician who can 2-gap. I don't see those comparisons at all. If he bulks up I can see him being a David Irving type of player.

Rousseau doesn't have much twitch as an edge rusher. That's one of the knocks on him. Phillips definitely plays with more explosive power but he doesn't really explode out of his stance either.

Rousseau had 15.5 sacks mostly beating up on overmatched interior linemen and using his length in pursuit to track down QBs. Diaz lined him up at 0 tech and he crossed the face of Cs and Gs for easy sacks. Or he engaged his man and used his length to shed and clean up coverage sacks.

Your eval is spot on, as usual, and I stand corrected. I remembered GR's getoff and twitch being much better than it looked on this highlight reel. Most of his sacks came from crossing the face of Cs and Gs as you said.

He looks stronger than I remembered. And there is no denying that he is a playmaker that knows how to utilize his length to his advantage. You can watch the progression, starting with the Va Tech game, then continuing into the Pitt and Duke games.

I remembered his first step being a lot quicker. Either the results skewed my perception, or I drank too much bourbon while watching the games. Probably a 50/50 chance on that one.

Because on several of those plays (out of the 400 yards), maybe Lawrence would have seen and gone to a different receiver that could have scored. Just a thought.
Clemson missing 3 defensive starters hurt them more than missing Lawrence. I know this may not be popular opinion but hard to be sure either way.

It is so nice to win a game unquestionably like we did Saturday. We haven't had many of these the last several years. No chance for any post-game mopiness like I've experienced after some wins this year or any need to "defend" a win (like, well, yeah, we gave up 28 points but [insert opponent] had 650 yards of offense and 42 against [insert barometer team]). I like this better!

I know, I mentioned that in another post.
Lawrence may be the big stud, but they were also missing several key starters on defense. It appears they are back. They missed them as much as Lawrence.

Stuff like that happens to me all the time when I haven't seen a guy in a while. And I'm starting to notice some guys getting more athletic with offseason training, at least compared to what they shown on film. Justin Jefferson and Chase Claypool are good examples that burned my tape evaluations.

All of this is true.........the only question I have is how much is attributable to the calm leadership of King. He makes no mistakes and always has us in the game. Can we duplicate this with another QB or how much is the drop-off if we lose King, Phillips, Bolden, etc.

We see the drop off everytime King comes out the game and they put in the next qb..

Unless something unexpected happens at the combine or before it, I'd be very surprised if he's available at Houston's R1 pick.

Rousseau's most impressive work was chasing plays down. Not sure they make all the highlight reels, but he gets to scrambles/runs others don't. I also think he would have been well-served coming back and showing a bit more off the edge. Finally, with his frame and willingness to learn (an understated attribute), I'd see him in some ways similar to Carlos Dunlap.

Agreed. I don’t want people to think I’m crapping on Rousseau because 15.5 sacks is a great accomplishment but that number hides significant flaws. His inability to play the run is why he couldn’t crack the starting lineup for the first few games last year. Half his sack production came from 0 technique and as stated earlier, that ish ain’t gonna fly in the NFL. He has 19.5 tfls but 15.5 were sacks so he only made 4 run stops behind the line. I think him opting out had a lot to do with avoiding the sophomore slump. If you’ve got holes in your game, best to not give scouts more tape of them
People might need to watch film again, greg wasn’t that big of a liability in the run game, he made his presence known in that area too🤷🏾‍♂️💯.

a lot of people like to forget but greg Rousseau was just a redshirt freshman last season and still dominated with 15.5 sacks 19.5 tackles for loss in **** near his first season ever playing solely dlineman full time. You don’t just do that with being such a flawed player. He’s got so much room for growth

He does have room to grow because he’s so raw. He has tools that are unteachable. His agility at that height with that wingspan is his biggest asset. He’s able to reach around blockers and get his hands on quarterbacks. He’s a more raw Brian Burns. Burns had a big freshman year, a sophomore slump and then had a great junior season so teams had a little better idea of who they were getting. My concern for Rousseau is that teams might not want to use an early pick on a guy who they can’t just plug in as a full time starter right away. Phillips is more NFL ready today.
