The Don… updates??

Doubt Chaney is back this week.

Fletcher is out for a while.

Parrish is already banged up although should be a go.

We are a 17 point favorite and it’s Game 8 in a MASH unit RB room. It’s time for Chris Johnson to get some snaps in the first half with the ones. Ajay Allen earned more reps, his vision is pretty poor but he has clear talent, the jump cuts were very clean. I just think he’s a poor man’s Henry Parrish, who is a poor man’s elite RB. But CJ brings that element nobody else does.

It’s also no coincidence Brashard took snaps from the backfield on Saturday night. He was clearly RB3 with Fletcher and Parrish out. So maybe that’s the direction they continue to go, we’ll see. But we’re likely to have at least 2 of the 4 backs out again, so maybe Brashard is that next guy up but hopefully they continue to let him get some snaps while giving CJ some run as well.

Is Fletcher high ankle? Sucks but hopefully he can be back for the final stretch run against FSU and beyond.

For the next couple weeks I would use Parrish if healthy, Allen, smith and CJ. I think TVD plays so maybe the passing game picks up and we don’t have to run our RB into the dirt.

Will citizen play this year? He wasn’t in pads so I assume he isn’t close to playing

Reading the tea leaves, I would say yes Fletcher is a high-ankle or something similar. Multi-week injury.

Citizen...who knows? I have heard he's getting close but he's now been enrolled here for 19 football games and has worn pads for 0 of them, so I'm not counting on him playing at all this year. If he does, awesome. But he cannot be counted on to actually make a difference at this point.

Best case, Parrish is fully ready to go this week at 100%. Allen should be healthy. And Chaney/Fletcher are 100% by FSU, but I am nowhere near confident in that.

Chaney seems concussion plus other banged up injuries so doubt he plays the next two weeks.

Not to take the weather thread away from Joey but next Saturday so be a warm one for the first half with Virginia baking in the sun. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Mario try and wear them down with the run so we will see who gets the reps. I know blocking in pass pro is huge for RB in this offense but CJ should be able to eat up 10 snaps or so and provide a boost to the room on some runs etc.. need to use the depth we have.

I'm not saying he's blind. He's a capable back. I just don't think he has a great natural feel for the position.
oh ok. Gotcha. I thought you were saying he was like Trent Richardson. Dude really was like Stevie Wonder in the I formation. Luckily for him, he played at Bama, where he could get 7 yards before having to make a move. :ROFLMAO:

If literally nothing else, CJ needs to play to just lighten the load on the entire room. Parrish has gotten hurt and missed time. Fletcher has gotten hurt and missed time. Chaney has gotten hurt and missed time. We need to get another body in that rotation ASAP. As I mentioned earlier, I think the plan with Brashard was two-fold...they want to get him more touches, period. But he plays the same position as our best offensive player, so you can simultaneously give him more touches while also lightening the load in the RB room by putting him in the backfield and handing it to him. And he can handle a few like that per week, he's gotten MUCH stronger since he got here.

If it's me, I would hold Parrish out again this week unless he is 100.0%, and give Allen the start. Sign him up for 15 carries, with Brashard getting 5 and CJ getting another 5. This is assuming Chaney can't go, which probably isn't too far-fetched given how it looked Saturday. So just roll with 3 "backs", one being Brashard. If TVD is back, that should be plenty.

Unless one has played RB (I have) the designated hole is not open that often. It doesn’t take a jump cut to find daylight. Stick a foot in the ground and head for the opening, if there is one.
You're right, a jump cut is not necessary to find daylight, in that situation. Edge would just slide until he found daylight. It's just a nice tool to have in your bag, if you are quick enough to pull it off.

I am curious if we can make it through the season without burning CJ2's redshirt. I know redshirts aren't as important as they used to be, but CJ2 might benefit from it as would Miami.

I think Don has been the best back this year.

But we're blessed with that room. Between Ajay, Parrish (if healthy), and CJ, we have more than enough to run the ball against UVA provided the OL creates some holes. The depth there is a nice luxury.
I'd say it's good depth, but I don't think any of them are multi-year NFL starters. They're more in the Dallas / Homer mould - good College backs without that special something who can hang around at the next level as bit-part players.

Chaney left a lot of yards on the field on Saturday because he couldn't break through any sort of tackle attempt around his legs.

I dont mind Ajay, but I feel like he over-relies on his jump cut too much. It worked in the 2nd OT against Clemson but there's been other games where he would've had big gains if he just kept running straight, but he decided to bounce back inside and ran into a wall of tacklers.

I don’t see an nfl RB on the roster right now from what I have seen on the field.

Not trying to be "That guy", but how can one have poor vision and clean jump cuts? Having good vision is being able to see when the jump cut is available. Those last two runs near the goalline.... if he had poor vision, he'd have just ran to the clogged gaps (where the plays was supposed to go), for losses. With poor vision, there is no way he gets to the zone on either run.
A guy can definitely have poor vision but make clean jump cuts. A jump cut is like a spin, stiff arm, or a juke. It’s a move that requires agility. A running back can be highly agile but still have poor vision.

I agree with @OrangeBowlMagic Ajay seems to have decent to good agility but lacks good vision. Vision being decision making, instinct, feel to know where the gap is or is going to be.

Rewatching this game now and in the late 3rd/4th quarter Chaney and Allen had some huge holes for potential big gainers but trip all over their own feet or run right into a defender for only 4-5 yard gains. Would've been nice to see Brashard get some more carries as the Clemson D was wilting in the 4th. Our backs are all "good" but we're in desperate need of a homerun hitter at that position. I guess they're trying to redshirt CJ, which is crazy to me cause if he's as good as we hope there's no way he'll be here 5 years.

If it was the 3rd and 1 play where Clemson sent a 17th defender into the box and shot him out of a cannon to meet Chaney head on, I'm guessing he got concussed. He looked like he tried to shake it off, but went to the sideline. I don't remember seeing him after that.
Also looked to me like there should have been a targeting review. Agree, he got his bell wrung there and was done for the day.

But if he don’t have vision, it won’t matter where he spins, jukes, or jump cuts, he will be getting smashed. A RB without vision will be running up people’s backs all game, Lo Lingard for example. Speed, but nothing else. Yea a kid making a one on one move and escaping outside, may not show vision… but we seen this kid on back to back carries use a move, went away from the assigned gap and got in the zone. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but a kid that can do that in succession in 11 on 11 football, has some vision. That was my point. A clean jump cut in 11 v 11, and into and through, then out of a cloudy box, shows vision.
