Here is/are the bottom line(s):
1.) The defense lost NO ONE of significance last season. This could be because the players who left SUCKED and/or because the development SUCKED, and
2.) The talent is getting older, more mature, more experienced and more developed (physically and mentally). Regardless of whether the scheme changes, none of the coaches teaching have changed (continuity I suppose).
In 2013 during ACC play, our defense allowed 262 actual points or 32.75 PPG. These numbers are utterly disgusting. This number MUST go south of 25.00 PPG. All is forgiven if they can keep points off the board especially when it matters during ACC play. I don't care how they do it, just keep points off the scoreboard. This is year 4 and Golden didn't want to make ANY changes to his staff. Even though I believe we have a big enough sample size to know what to expect in 2014, none of that matters for now.
**** shame that we as UM fans are asking for and being OK with a top 40 defense...smh. Top 10 or GTFOH....BTW by no means am I suggesting that we will be top 10.
I think the long term goal is a top 10 D.. but there's nothing wrong with being realistic.

I expect a slight improvement, but I probably should know better than to get my hopes up like that.
On paper we improve, but schematically we remain the same.
I surely hope "more talent" equates to better on-field performance.
What are the exact schematically issues you see?
I don't claim to be an "X and Os" expert, but anyone with a set of eyes can see that there is clearly something wrong with our Defense.
So, when I say "we remain the same schematically" I mean that I don't expect anything from our defensive scheme to change this season.
The only things that are changing are some of the players.
You site no true freshman in the two deep, but they could have easily played last year. Could they have done any worse? The staff lacks a killer instinct and it permeates the entire program. Case in point, the AD tweeting that EVEN the basketball team puts players into the league, after Swopes as picked up as an UFA? Seriously?Nevermind the fact that we are currently marred in one of the worst dry streaks of missing a player in the first round. This is a win to them? The program is a shell of itself, all the dumb videos and rationalizing you want to do will not change the fact that mediocrity is heralded in Coral Gables now.

My thought is if the scheme calls for a guy to cover the flats but he is not fast enough to get there before the RB, how do you blame that on the scheme?
Or if the safety is supposed to be over the top but he takes a bad angle allowing the WR to get behind him for the easy score, how do you blame that on scheme?
Scheme is not the result in guys not making tackles, that is the result of bad football players. How many times did we see AJ get run over, around, or by? Scheme can not fix that only better FOOTBALL players can.
There's enough talent to field a top 25 defense. Anything short of that should be deemed a failure.

lets start with 275 lb DEs patrolling as OLBs covering slot WRs

how many plays were made by upperclassmen....

Not on the most important unit on the field, the defensive line--especially DT. I'd trade/take Tyrone Cornelius over DP all day if you gave me Vince Wilfork over Olsen Pierre.
How many QB's, DT's, and DE's have we had drafted in the last seven-eight years…tells the whole story.
