The "Cloud"

It was pretty evident that Golden was using the "cloud" to mask his failures. I'm sure it had some affect mainly on the 2012 class, but no where near what he was making it out to be. Now that its gone, its become clear he doesn't have a handle on south florida recruiting.

He's quickly running out of excuses.

Honestly, who cares what EXACT effect the NCAA cloud had on recruiting in 2012 and 2013? We have a new cloud, a self-inflicted/self-imposed cloud (i.e. ON THE FIELD PERFORMANCE).

Al can make 1008 excuses, it doesn't matter really. If Al doesn't improve this season, he will be quickly on the hot-seat and forced to make difficult decisions for him (not for us but for him). The school wants to see improved results and so far there is little.

Some can say 6-7-9 but all I see is 3-5-5. Al make your excuses, results speak louder...............EVENTUALLY.

Please stop the whining. We will get who we get and I trust Al and Co. to coach them up and build the current zephyr into a Cat 5 storm. #Dale!

This class is not bad. Its not as great as many of us hoped for, with an anticlimatic finish, but most of that is due in part to the fact that we locked up so many kids early. If we got to NLOID and suddenly got commits from Moten, Chad, and Kaaya, this board would explode in an orgy of celebration. Losing Gibbons sucks. That one bothered me. Powell was somewhat of a loss too, but if we can sneak in another RB, I wouldnt lose much sleep over that. I never really cared that Bethel left. I would have liked JC Jackson, and Valentine, well there is no point in rehashing that, we all wanted him but it is what it is.

Overall we got 4 DTs, two really good Safeties. An elite RB prospect. An elite QB propsect. Two great studs on the OL. A pair of great/elite DEs. Some SOLID ballers at LB. We LOOK to be keeping many local kids home (Chad, DJ, Yearby, Darling, McDermott, Brady, Moten, Smith) This class addressed a lot of needs and is very solid. Yes it could have been spectacular, but we didnt exactly finish the season off in spectacular fashion either. If/when we do better on the field, these classes will get better. But its never going to be better than the FSU's of the world. It never has been.

Though i am very disappointed that we are probably not goin to finish strong, but there are some here that are talking like we have a crappy class we have atleast 5 guys that will contribute big time for this program

I get that most of you are ****ed at the staff and im one of them, but to keep talking like we have scrubs in this class is absurd

And as for the "cloud", it is incontrovertible that it had a negative impact on recruiting. I just posted a quote from Drew Harris last night, where he flat out said he wanted to commit to Miami out of HS and was scared off by the NCAA investigation.

That isnt to say EVERYTHING was the fault of the "cloud". At some point you need to imrpove and win football games.

But this program has been stuggling for a decade. We havent finished a season ranked in years. To be close to landing a top 10 class is still pretty darn good all things considered. UM has never consistently landed top 10 classes since I have been following recruiting except around Coker's days, and look how well that turned out.

The anticlimatic finish, does that mean this class sucks. It just didnt finish with the big "bang' that many hoped for. But if you looked at the rankings all season, we had more kids committed than most programs did all year. That meant that it was ALWAYS inevitable that there would be less "good news" moments for this class than for other schools late in the process.

We have to play in the ACC title game to start getting these bigger recruits. They want to see we are one class away from maybe winning a national title. Winning is the key here.

Honestly I think the blowout to Louisville cost us consideration of some of the big names that were on the fence. They want to see progress with their own eyes, not hear about it.

It didn't help.

Well, I do think there were some real, negative consequences of the NCAA investigation, and it allowed our opponents to use the uncertainty against us. In that sense, the cloud was real. What's happened since the NCAA judgment though, is that the cloud has essentially been removed, and rather than uncertainty, our opponents are using incompetence against us. In reality, they probably could have been using that from the onset, as it is the more dangerous of the two--uncertainty can be spun, but as this clown show is learning, incompetence cannot.

This program cannot hire a mediocre, or even marginally good coach. Texas can. So can FSU. We, however, need someone who is REALLY good at recruiting (either or both evaluating and closing) or at coaching them up. If you look at our history, we've had some great coaches -- Schnelly, JJ, Erickson, and Butch. All were GREAT at something or at a combination of things, even Erickson, who was an alcoholic disaster and a bad recruiter, but who could coach them up on offense. Right now, we have a coach who is an organized, diligent recruiter, but not really a great one -- either in evals or in closing. He's clearly a below average Xs and Os coach. As long as this is the case, we're going to be suffering through some tough *** Signing Days, regardless of whether there is a cloud or whether it's sunny as balls.

I think there is truth to this statement.

My biggest issue with Al is that I don't see him as a good gameday coach. I don't see him as an X's and O's guy that can "out-coach" quality competition, I don't see any ability to make adjustments on the fly, I don't see innovation.

Some of the bigger schools with larger budgets may be able to get away with hiring innovative coordinators to supplement the head coach. Look at Georgia - Mark Richt is an offensive mind, but they can afford to throw nearly $1 million at an innovative D-Coordinator in Pruitt.

Given Miami's budget, I don't see this as a sustainable strategy, which is why the head coach here has to bring something to the table, at least on one side of the ball.

I don't know if Al truly brings any value in that regard.

I also agree with your assessment that he falls under the "good, not great" category of recruiters, which probably isn't enough given that we'll need superior talent to overcome coaching deficiencies.

I think he's improved as a recruiter and that he's still learning south Florida. Despite that, there are no moral victories in recruiting, and the amount of talent leaving the region is disappointing (particularly over the last two years). I agree he will never get everyone, but the hit rate needs to improve.

Also, we need to do a better job of recruiting certain positions. The recruitment of defensive tackles has fallen into the "you have to try hard to ***** up this badly" realm.

I'll be interested to see this board next year at this time. I know I'll be labeled as a doomsdayer, but given the talent on the roster and schedule for next year, anything more than 8 wins would surprise me. We'll see if the tune changes to the "one more year" crowd.

Of course, hopefully I'm terribly wrong, we win the ACC, make it to a BCS bowl game, and I have to eat crow.

It's unfair to say there was no cloud. When CNN is in front of your building talking about the death penalty, it affects the perception of your program. It hurt us most with national guys and JUCOs.

The bigger issue is the failure to identify and develop local 3-star talent. Guys who would walk through the cloud to play for Miami. The Louisville game crystallized that. They beat us down with those three-stars, while the kids we plucked from the Golden Camp watched from the bench.

This team has some premium talent. I'd pick our top four players over anybody's top four players. But there are no coal shovelers, to use a Goldenism, and those guys have nothing to do with the cloud.

I say this every year. There is a lot of truth in this.

But missing out on Lane, Rudolph, Dixon, Sony, Valentine and Cook is a crime that most of us cannot accept.

And saying it's because we suck is bull**** because Florida is having no problem.

Florida did the right thing by firing their OC and bringing in a new guy. They could sell the recruits a story on how different and great the offense would look next year. We kept our putrid DC and the recruits on the fence saw no hope of any change in our ****** defense. If Al would have done the right thing (fire his bff), and brought in ANY new DC, he could have sold the recruits on how different and great the defense would look next year.

Even if we fired the dc I don't think we would've finished strong. Florida has better recruiters than we do IMO. They also have more resources, facilities, and recent success. Coley and Hurlie are the only dudes I trust to reel in top guys. Barrow makes good evaluations and is a solid, not great recruiter.

Carroll failed to reel in Dixon, Lane, or Rudolph.
Paul Williams made some very questionable evals this period by taking Dennis turner, Mayes, and bethel over Battle, Michael Johnson, Dowels, and Wilson.
Coach D has mishandled Broward recruiting the previous two years.

And I still have major concerns about Goldens ability to Sell & evaluate. Powell and Gibbons both flipped 2 weeks after an in home visit.

There is a difference. Florida has markedly better facilities, plays in the SEC, and...probably doles out some cash. Florida will always recruit well because of that, similar to Texas, LSU, and some other big schools. Kids come to Miami because they're local, and / or because its a dominant program that has been a pipeline, and has strong ties, to the NFL. The latter facet of this program is not there right now. We're not churning out NFL players anymore; we're a middling ACC; and there isn't anything that we do schematically that helps kids get into the league.

Please look up the resume of Howard Schnellenberger before you make nonsense claims that "we can't hire anyone good". We used to do it all the time.

Only a Miami "fan" could take a commit list like this and criticize it all to ****... We got our major commits early. Too bad the staff doesn't cater to the armchair recruits' excitement over the last BS week of recruiting...
