TAMU Game Week Discussion Thread 2.0

I think this is gonna be the Francisco game. Guidry used him on delayed blitzes last week. Utilizing those to confuse Weigman is the key. And Weigman can pick up the first down with his legs, so eliminating that with Francisco lurking, if our coverage downfield is good, is a huge factor.
I didn’t rewatch all the plays on D but did he blitz much? I know once on the one Wes got home but for the most part he was used as a decoy in A gap pressure

Ohios OL couldn’t handle it

But to your point I’ll expect them to keep A&M guessing since they showed a lot of disguises on tape he will certainly blitz on some of those disguises to keep Weigman and the OL guessing

UM is gonna win. It will either be close and UM win by 7-10 pts or UM will win be 17-21pts. Not worried about A&M defense vs UM’s offense at all. Go look at how we dominated TOP, total yards, and first downs last year. We have a front 7 that will contain their qb, and I’m confident that UM’s DBs will do their jobs.

Guidry gonna earn his entire salary for this one game the way he’s gonna masterfully attack Texas AM

At least 1 pick from our secondary

I’ve said a few times just the way Gabbert wasn’t forcing the issue I think QBs on our schedule will and I expect a lot of turnovers this season

I think Guidry is going to dial up a great game plan for this one. I like our front 7 vs their run game this year. They've got studs at the skill positions with Stewart, Moose, Owens all capable of giving problems. Their OL is good (not as good as ours IMO). QB is a wild card, he can burn you with his arm or feet but who knows what QB you'll get. He torched Ole Miss and looked like an absolute stud in the making but then fell apart the next week at Auburn. Also didn't really dominate a very bad UMASS team after that.

In the end, as others have stated, this should come down to our ability to handle their DL. If we can create lanes and space for runners, I think we have an excellent shot to win this one. Need Dawson to come with a creative and aggressive gameplan for this one. Their secondary is just ok and I think Colbie could be in for a huge game. Would love to see Ray Ray or Harrell on the field a lot this game. Need speed on the field badly so they can't just sit shallow and stack the box.

Offensively, I'm finding ways to go at their true freshman LB or to confuse him and expose his eyes. Pulling guards, pulling tackles, pulling a TE, mesh concepts in his vicinity, run counter, etc.

Then forcing their corners to tackle. Chappell doesn't like to tackle on the perimeter but he's solid in coverage. Tunnel screens will be effective again if we're strong blocking like we were a week ago. They're not going to want to tackle Young or Horton on the boundary as big as they are.

Back to the defense... get Couch off the field and Davis off the boundary and into the slot. DO NOT let them get Stewart lined up on Couch because he's toast in that slot fade. They ran it 7-8 times a week ago.
They ran that slot fade with him and that Noah Thomas kid

Noah Thomas doesn't scare me at all. He's a matchup nightmare for someone like New Mexico, not really everyone else.

Limit Stewart and you've got a good shot. The problem is we don't have anyone that's doing that alone so you have to get creative to do it and it probably exposes something else on your defense. Petrino will find it.

How is ATM's OL?

We got a new OL coach last season and the results were really bad, but we lost our great center and ended up playing true freshmen. At the end of the season, against LSU, they seemed to mature. They had a pretty good game against NM as NM was bringing 5 or 6 almost every play. CW was sacked twice, but generally made some very good reads and got rid of the ball.

Our run game was not much, and at least some of that is attibutable to NM playing to stop the run. So CW just took advantage and went over the top. Now having1.5 yrs with our new OL coach and being a year older (we return everyone on the line) and having our center back, we should be decent.

p.s. I expect Miami is going to lay back up top and make A&M beat them with the run and the short passing game- see if A&M can drive 10 or 12 plays to score. In that event, I expect a lot of horizontal passing- we have some great YAC guys in Ainias Smith and Moose Muhammed, and capable RBs catching the ball. Still, I suspect A&M will test your corners and safeties deep. I know you have one great cover safety, but we literally have 4 very fast, very good receivers. It will definitely be a game of cat and mouse between your DC and our OC.

I think the two lines will play to pretty much a draw.

We handled their DL pretty well last season, I understand that that some of their players that played last year are still there and probably improved, but so has UM’s OL. Unless they added some complete studs from the transfer portal or from their high school recruiting UM should be able to handle them.

I think this game comes down a few areas on offense and one area on D.

Offense:
Run the Ball effectively. We are not winning this game if we're not able to run the ball with similar if not better results as it was last year.
No Turnovers. This is obvious, but one of the biggest back breaking plays from last year was Stevenson's muffed punt
Clean up the penalties. When your best feature is your OL and running game you have to stay ahead of the chains and cannot commit false starts and holding

Defense:
Get pressure on CW. If we're not able to get pressure and rattle the QB we could be in for a long day. However, Coach G likes to attack and bring pressure. So gives me hope.

We have the talent to win the game and I'm not overly concerned with their running game. There's no Achain in that backfield this year.
