TAMU Game Week Discussion Thread 2.0

I think this is gonna be the Francisco game. Guidry used him on delayed blitzes last week. Utilizing those to confuse Weigman is the key. And Weigman can pick up the first down with his legs, so eliminating that with Francisco lurking, if our coverage downfield is good, is a huge factor.

We ran on them last year - our backs averaged 5.5 YPC. We held them under 4 YPC and kept Achane wraps.
Both our O and D line are vastly improved. You could certainly make the case that ATM’s DL got better but their OL isn’t very good and their backs aren’t either.
The position adavantage is very even.
I love our chances.

I think we play a lot of 2 high. Back up off of their WRs, disguise coverages, and try to bait him into an interception or 2 by showing blitzers and dropping them into his passing lanes or him trying to throw it down field into 2 high. Probably won't end up with many sacks unless he's confused post snap and holds the ball because someone is in his passing lane he thought he had or because we disguised our coverage really well.

Other than that, he'll be getting the ball out quick taking what we give him. No since in blitzing too crazy because we won't be getting home and he has good legs.

Their interior OL is rock solid if Bryce Foster is fully healed from his season ending injury last year. Our best bet to get consistent pressure is probably Mesidor lined up on their true freshman RT. Force them to run middle or left.

Then again, in previous stops, Guidry has been more "stop the pass and force teams to run" versus the opposite that most DCs are doing. Durkin is very similar but has had lots of trouble stopping the run his last several years as DC and HC at multiple programs. I'm not the least bit afraid of their running game unless it's Reuben Owens and he's a liability in pass pro right now so we could take advantage there if they want to feature him.

How is Weigman a "very good QB"? He has 4 starts
Wait, so a quarterback can't be good if he only has 4 starts?

He was the named the top QB in the country by the National Quarterback Club his senior year and ranked #3 in the country by the recruiting services.

In his brief college career he has 13 TDs to 0 INTs.

He's good.

Weigman wants to push the ball down field, so maybe he holds onto the ball a tad too long and our rushers can get home. I do agree we will confuse him into an INT. We almost came up with 1 vs Miami(OH). I also think our LBs are more knowledgeable of where they need to be in coverage post snap. Something Mike Zimmer loved to do was walk his LBs into the gaps and then either both blitzed, or just 1, or both dropped back into coverage. Again it helps to have the athletic and high IQ LBs he had in Barr & Kendricks but it seems like Mauigoa is the QB of this defense and Cloyd looked good in coverage. Wes of course got home on the blitz.

I kind of wanna see Bain lineup vs their true freshman. I know it's a lot to ask out of Bain, but he is an advanced pass rusher as a freshman. He can push their tackle into Weigmans lap. I haven't seen anything to show me that Weigman is comfortable moving off his spot and making a play passing And he can always stunt with Mesidor lined up on the interior.

You said 'very good' not good.

He's also passed for 121 yards, 191 and 155, in 3 of his starts. He lost his only road start in his career. God**** so good

You'll need to add "enough to go 1-1" to that last sentence in a few days.

Offensively, I'm finding ways to go at their true freshman LB or to confuse him and expose his eyes. Pulling guards, pulling tackles, pulling a TE, mesh concepts in his vicinity, run counter, etc.

Then forcing their corners to tackle. Chappell doesn't like to tackle on the perimeter but he's solid in coverage. Tunnel screens will be effective again if we're strong blocking like we were a week ago. They're not going to want to tackle Young or Horton on the boundary as big as they are.

Back to the defense... get Couch off the field and Davis off the boundary and into the slot. DO NOT let them get Stewart lined up on Couch because he's toast in that slot fade. They ran it 7-8 times a week ago.

You're right about going at our young LB. That's our weakspot. Also, though we have great DL, our pass rush is not that great. Re Chapelle, he is actually a very good tackler. His last game was not too good, but he's one of the best CBs to come our way in a while.

This. **** I could line up against Couch and still torch his ***.
