Not too complicated here. Major improvements across the board on offense and special teams, our worst year of the Manny era on defense. The drastic improvements in ranking include scoring offense (+73), third down offense (+74), FG percentage (+89) and red zone percentage (+91). We also ran the ball more often (+40) and more effectively (+45). Sack percentage is still poor at 95th, but we improved by three whole percentage points and 27 spots.

On defense, the story is simple: our run defense cratered. We dropped 82 spots (!) in rush defense, after four years of solid play under Manny. We actually improved slightly in pass defense (+8) and third down defense (+6). Due to the disaster of a run defense, this was Manny's worst year in scoring defense (-20) and yards per play (-54). We also took a step back in pass rush (-35) despite two NFL DEs.

Remember these numbers as we learn about Manny's off-season adjustments.
It doesn't matter what adjustments Diaz makes, you don't lose 62-26 and give up 800 yards of offense plus get blown out against the only 2 good teams on the schedule if you are a good improving coach with a clue. Diaz made zero adjustments last night because he doesn't know how. He should have been fired after last night's game. That game was even worse in person to watch, it was beyond a disgrace. The same thing happened against Clemson earlier this year. No good D coordinator is going to come coach for a lame duck HC in Diaz next year. Diaz is a dead man walking.

As far as the offense, our offense is not even that impressive, we had 10 points midway through the 3rd Q against a terrible UNC D. We just look so much improved because our O under Enos was beyond horrendous. Diaz is a good talker but is really an empty suit. He is not the right guy.

Until James and Diaz and co are gone, nothing will change. Until Miami commits to hiring proven HC's with a track record and decides they want to be a successful football program, the same **** as last night will continue. I am beyond disgusted.

With a mobile QB and a supposedly high octane O, that is pure garbage.

2019- UNLV was 86th

Where did Justice come from? UNLV. I'm tired of these G5 specials as coaches.
There's no way this team has any success w/out a mobile QB. Now or in the foreseeable future.

“Improvement”

When you set the bar that low in year 1 it’s not something very noteworthy to “improve.”

We went from awful to mediocre in a bunch of areas and regressed from above average to mediocre in others.

Yay.

Diaz’s days are numbered just like his predecessors.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

D$, serious question brother. Why do you even bother with statistical breakdowns and all these meaningless stats? I get it, we all try to look for positives and glimpses of hope, but the reality is we are a dead program with a terrible head coach at the helm.

After all these years you would think this fan base will have their eyes open and focused on the real issues at hand. This un-athletic department is completely sucking the air out of this program and we have fans breaking down offensive and defensive stats that are completely irrelevant. We all know the Manny experiment will end in failure, so who cares about all this other stuff.

I am in no way shape or form trying to tell you what or what not to post but this is getting ridiculous. You being a fan with a voice and a platform, I think it would be wise to start pointing out and exposing the incompetence of this athletic department.. for the better of this program. Not only you, but it’s about time this fan base unites and tries to find a way to make our voice heard and apply pressure to these bums and force some change.

Exactly. Well said.

Because there is already enough emotion and venting on this board. If you need more of that, there are plenty of threads for you.

These are the stats, good and bad. None of them are cherry-picked. They paint the most accurate picture of what we are and where we stack up in the country.

Nobody is putting lipstick on anything. These are the numbers. They tell a pretty clear story. Big step forward on offense and special teams and big step back on defense.

D, I respect you. I like stats, but stats w/o context never tell the whole story.

We played 10 teams this season; 4 teams ranked in the top 50 in total def and ahead of us (Clemson #7, UAB #15, Pitt #26, & UL #43). UNC ranked ahead of us in the top 60 (#58)
The other 5 ranked bottom 70 (NC St #72, UVA #96, Duke #98, VT #103, FSU #108)

We played 5 teams that ranked in the top 50 in rushing def, ahead of us (Pitt #5, Clemson #12, UVA #40, UAB #41, and UNC #50)
The other 5 teams ranked outside the top 60 (NC St #66, UL #79, VT #85, FSU #99, and Duke #108)

We played 3 teams that ranked top 50 in passing def (UAB #12, UL #19, and Clemson #25). The other 7 teams ranked outside the top 60 (Duke #65, Pitt #84, UNC #86, FSU #99, NC St #94, VT # 108, & UVA #123)

Here’s how we stacked:

Against UAB: 595 total offense. First game
158 passing / 337 rushing

Against UL: 485 total offense. 2nd game
325 passing / 160 rushing

Against FSU: 467 total offense. 3rd game
267 passing / 200 rushing

Against Clemson: 210 total offense. 4th game
121 passing / 89 rushing

Against Pitt: 331 total offense. 5th game
222 passing / 109 rushing

Against UVA: 444 total offense. 6th game
322 passing / 122 rushing

Against NC St: 520 total offense. 7th game
431 passing / 189 rushing

Against VT: 386 total offense. 8th game
255 passing / 131 rushing

Against Duke: 524 total offense. 9th game
304 passing / 220 rushing

Against UNC: 314 total offense. 10th game
239 passing / 75 rushing

So if we isolate this:
The anomaly was UAB & UL. Then again, when the season started, we saw a surge in scoring and yards which prompted Saban to make his comment. As the season settled, teams settled in.

When we played a top 60 defense in 3 of the 5 games, our O stalled. When we played a top 60 rush defense, our rushing stalled. (Exception UAB)

When we played against a top 60 pass defense, our passing stalled.

Our offense took off against poor defenses, which we had the luxury to play a lot of them.

If anything, I would say we finally played above competition vs. playing below it.

Our defense actually made it difficult for the offense this yr in several games. We were very fortunate to win 8 games this yr. We seem to not be on the same page this season. Play a good defense; the O struggled & the defense did just enough. Play a good O, and the def struggled, and the O bailed us out in the waning moments.

@DMoney what changes would you make that are realistic? Everyone is going to say fire manny and while that may be the best solution, it’s not happening this year. So what changes can we make that would make our defense next season improve the way our offense did this season

Great post. Especially this part “but stats w/o context never tell the whole story.” Stats get overblown on this board because they fail to take into account the context that the ACC is a trash conference for the most part.

Our O is clearly better because the last coach was an epic waste in the Donofrio level and because we got a legit QB. But the O is still nowhere near a championship O.

The defense is even worse than it looks. We played crap offenses like Pitt with their backup QB.

Exactly. U can’t just throw out #’s w/o context. We was, literally, historically bad last year offensively. So of course #’s are going to look great by any competent OC. Our Covid schedule also encompassed a lot of bad defenses, which we took advantage of. However, if we played an overall good - decent defense or played a defense strong in an area, either our total offense stalled, or a part of our offense stalled which caused us to become unbalanced. When we played an overall weak def, we ate.

But our Def took a huge step back this yr, overall.

Ask yourself - is it the offense that's looking so much better across the board? Or is King that masked a lot of our deficiencies. The only player I really saw step up and develop was Harley this year. And he also pointed to some troubling trends earlier this year when the WR unit was called out.
