Stat comparison with last year (updated)

I posted the defensive stats, too.

Fair enough, but my statement at looking at things from a relative standpoint still stands. All of those numbers you posted for both offense and defense are propped by the lesser opponents on the schedule.

Manny’s defense is based on turnovers if you don’t get them you get shredded. He also makes the coverage way too complicated for our players. How many times throughout the year, do you see our DBs leave receivers wide open? We should be playing man in either a cover 1 or cover 2 look from our safeties inside of this passing off to another DB coverages.

2019 - 128th

With a mobile QB and a supposedly high octane O, that is pure garbage.

2019- UNLV was 86th

Where did Justice come from? UNLV. I'm tired of these G5 specials as coaches.
If we hit the transfer portal for anything it OL. I’m sorry, I’m not sure we have 3D1 starters on this squad. If we do, fire the OL coach this second. Be a you look when our backups came in, who aren’t as athletic as King and they struggled bad.

I mean the numbers reflect where we are. We improved drastically on O which led to more wins. Last year our O cost us games, this year it won us games. (Thus our improved record)

we can be improved and have glaring issues. Both of those things can be true.

Only good news from Saturday is that UNC didn't hurt our 3rd down defense pct. Of course, that is because they got about 15 yards every time they ran the ball and never needed 3rd down, but I'll take the small victories.

Reason doesn't go well with people who prefer hysteria. You're right though....

Why didn’t Manny make offseason changes to fix the defense last year at the same time as he upgraded the offense??

What kind of Head Coach sits there like “well based on the results of 2019 all we need is an offense that can score 30 points a game and im playing for a national championship”??.. :diaf:

Good coaches make changes before glaring problems cripple their team... not Manny Bc he has to have a scapegoat every offseason to buy him more time 🗑 🗑🗑

Not too complicated here. Major improvements across the board on offense and special teams, our worst year of the Manny era on defense. The drastic improvements in ranking include scoring offense (+73), third down offense (+74), FG percentage (+89) and red zone percentage (+91). We also ran the ball more often (+40) and more effectively (+45). Sack percentage is still poor at 95th, but we improved by three whole percentage points and 27 spots.

On defense, the story is simple: our run defense cratered. We dropped 82 spots (!) in rush defense, after four years of solid play under Manny. We actually improved slightly in pass defense (+8) and third down defense (+6). Due to the disaster of a run defense, this was Manny's worst year in scoring defense (-20) and yards per play (-54). We also took a step back in pass rush (-35) despite two NFL DEs.

Remember these numbers as we learn about Manny's off-season adjustments.
550 yards rushing
2 running back ran for over 230 yards a piece.

The real stats that I would love too see are the stats when we've played top tier teams. The season stats are a mirage. When we play the big boys our stats are terrible. Thank You D-Money for sharing the season stats but I know that you already know that they don't add up when we face competent coaches and talented teams.

You're trying to imply there was some semblance of improvement. That's a relative premise.

Stats lie. Numbers and situations are always taken out of context unless you REALLY dig into what you're looking at. Last years team lost games against ****** opponents due to the lack of a kicker. Things like that are outliers. Last years team was better than 6-7, this years team was worse than 8-2. It's just the reality of breaking down things in context.

Like I said. Take out the 4-5 St Brendan's we play every year and THEN compare the numbers. Ignore the kicking fiasco's and then compare. I'd be as curious as anyone to see what those numbers look like. If improvement creeps into those sets of numbers, then I'll be the first to acknowledge it. Fact is our Offense AND defense completely face planted when faced with any type of competent opponent in EITHER year. The offense had moments, but those mostly came against lesser opponents. It's hard to really grab onto that and accept it as "improvement".
as a proud and esteemed st brendan elementary and high school alum, i resent the implication that st brendan is a lower tier opponent. i know you are emotional after yesterday's cornolding, but please direct it elsewhere.

Nobody is putting lipstick on anything. These are the numbers. They tell a pretty clear story. Big step forward on offense and special teams and big step back on defense.
It was a step forward on offense. But let's not forget that when you're the worst offense in UM history, and you add a phenomenal 5th year QB, who is a great leader, you're bound to improve significantly. Those stats, given King and the rest of our talent in comparison to our opponents, aren't all that impressive. Our offense looked like **** against a horrible UNC defense.

I mentioned before the season that we would definitely improve on offense, but we would definitely take a big dip on D too. Unless we find another King, the offense likely won't get better next year.

Lighten up Francis, it's a figure of speech. They actually have a pretty good football program going. A good friend of mine is the HC there.

A comparison of common opponents from one year to the next would give you a better idea of progress.
