Yeah I think the concern (which was valid) was this year would we be the type of team that could come back from being down a couple scores on offense? Would there be the explosive plays

I’m not sure that we can. Getting JoJo and Lyle could help but who knows.

Those offensive penalties on the OL were back breakers for an offense that relies so heavily on being on time ahead of sticks type stuff. But the weather was also dog**** so explosives were gonna be tougher

I think if we take away a couple of those OL penalties (that should really never happen with how much we invest there) we probably get a couple more TDs and maybe we aren’t talking as much about Beck today. Gotta clean that up for FSU for sure.

Dawson has 2 weeks to figure out some good ways to attack a team with 2 high safeties. I believe FSU had a similar plan last year and slowed us down. I think you guys need to keep in mind there were a lot of pre-snap penalties which really hurt us. Dawson was playing dink and dunk and running, those penalties are really what stopped us. I think #9 is the key. He can really unlock that next level to our offense if teams wanna sit back and slow down our WR game. Also great job by Dawson using the RB specifically Brown.

Seeing Lofton getting involved last night was nice. If he’s been injured maybe the bye week gets him closer to what we hope he can be. If you’re going to try and force us to get creative underneath he’s a guy we need to step up
 
Sometimes I feel We get too predictable. It’s a run most of the time on first down which means. It was a sequence in the second quarter where I felt We should pass the ball on the goal line in the Second quarter and we didn’t and had to settle for a field goal

People have their minds made up about Dawson (positively and negatively) and people hate to change their minds. It’s why I also appreciate his interviews he’s very candid. He’s not Bill Walsh or Andy Reid but he’s a solid OC that has stabilized that side of the ball when we needed it badly

Both sides of the ball feel “stable” at the moment and it’s been a long time since that’s happened

There’s a reason it’s called “counter”. If you run it over and over, you’re not countering anything.

I’m happy with both coordinators. I’ve been critical of Dawson but I believe he’s good if not great. He’s light years better than most of the bums we’ve had calling plays for the last 20 years.
 
I wouldn’t say I am unhappy with Dawson, but I do think he’s failed to adjust on occasion. Maybe his adjustment is just shut down what doesn’t work and keep running the “push the pile” offense.

Also, this was only Game 4. Miami has an all new wide receiver and a new quarterback. I know it sounds cliché and like an excuse, but I do think the passing game will improve as the season progressive. Jojo Trader should add to the wide receiver room, assuming he’s healthy and his head is on right. Lyle should give us a burst in their running game.

I would like to see Schott and Gibert get more snaps. Baumann has been a major disappointment. Carson Beck was at his best when he had Brock Bowers as his go to target and safety blanket. Even Lofton isn’t Brock Bowers, but we need the tight end more involved in the offense,

The whole design of counter is that you get the defense flowing in one direction (like the of you’re would on any run play) and run against the grain in the opposite direction. You have to set it up for it to work as designed. If you’re playing the most undisciplined defense in the world, you could probably get away with it over and over but 99.9% of defenses aren’t as terribly undisciplined as Miami’s 2020 defense.

There’s no magic play that defenses can’t stop. If the results of the UNC \ Miami game in 2020 were common, teams would literally run the same play. That scenario is an extreme outlier. Any good defense will be able to adjust and play the counter. If the defense plays it correctly it’s an easy tackle for loss.

Dawson said going in they would play 2 deep safeties trying to force dink and dunk so his plan was just run until they brought the safeties up. I think once they started stacking the box more I think he felt could start throwing in the 2nd half and take advantage and that just didn’t work at all. Beck couldn’t throw the ball accurately. Also had a wide open guy streaking for a TD but Brockermeyer missed his block so Beck never had a chance to step up and throw it down the field.

We do seem to kinda lack that dynamic piece.

Schott and Gilbert are only getting snaps in mop up duty. They are not playing over the other 2
