Shannon Dawson

a little puzzling as well how short of a WR bench we played with. We didn’t look to have much interest in playing many snaps 3+ wide. Dawson is predictable at times.
Loved the 21 wrinkles. Could do without any 12 looks because Bauman is ***. Gotta make teams think more. Post snap RPO (non screens) need to make more of an appearance
We ran a bunch of RPO slants to Horton last year and he was great at using his body to shield the man defender. Maybe we can use that to get Moore involved a little bit.

I feel he can be a tad predictable at times. Want to obviously lean on the strength of the O line, overall he is doing a pretty good job, when competition levels rise it's just going to be harder.

The run game is inside because the OL while monsters they aren't the most nimble ever, so inside zone over outside zone all day and tosses.

Counters or traps are what he's calling make a difference.

They run to the right a lot and when to the left, they're pulling the right side sometimes.

I think he's calling with what he has.

The one play that I wish he would call it's postal PA with a 12 yard in over the middle, with a skinny post from the opposite side.

The LBs are going to be at the LOS so you have room and the post drags a safety deep. Vs any cover 1-4 it should work with our current play sheet.
I’m one of the few people who doesn’t have an issue with how they call the run game. Our team is built to run that style and I’m 100% cool with playing to our strengths.

Completely agree.

Good news for Dawson that’s by far the best Defense we’ll see for the rest of the regular season imo. That’s a really good defense and secondary.

I don't necessarily agree with that. The Philadelphia Eagles don't just run inside zone and they have had one of the biggest OL in the league the last few years.

You can still incorporate other run concepts with out being a true outside zone scheme. It just seems Mario/Mirabal like OL wall scheme and hope a hole pops. It does work well at times, especially when this big OL can lean on a team for 4 quarters....but if you overdo it, the D can pinch and make spacing difficult. Keeping them honest by challenging the edges with RB and something like a Malachi sweep could go a long way to keep the edge guys and backers honest.

The condensed sets are not helping our struggling passing game. Hopefully when Jojo gets out there we see less of that

Let's be fair to Dawson here...

Yes, Gators had a plan to limit Daniels and Mali, but who could foresee #87 forgetting how to catch, run, or turn around for the football. I counted 4 missed opportunities to that guy alone in the first half that completely changes the picture.

Notice how many 2nd half passes went to Lofton? It was clear to me that the plan was to get the ball out to the TEs on short to intermediate routes. That, coupled with the early emphasis on the run was intended to break Gators out of the 2 high shell.

Beck seemed to struggle a bit with accuracy this week. Wet ball + snap/OL miscues in the first half just resulted in a sloppy, sloppy day.

To me, this was the equivalent of the Va Tech game last year. Offense had a lot of miscues in that one as well.

Thankfully, we aren't trotting out THAT defense 😭

Agree. Worse, Ga Tech. WRs not getting open, TEs not remembering routes and that they're supposed to actually look for the ball, QB's aim off. Normally that spells disaster.

Yet except for maybe 3-5 minutes in the 3rd quarter, we dominated that team so badly I'm surprised CPS wasn't walking on the field arresting our players for child abuse.

Dawson is just fine. He saw the risks and mitigated them. He stuck to the run game and UF players were tapping out in the 4th quarter. Get Trader and Lyle back, fold Super Lofton into the game now that he's shed his kryptonite, and use the bye-week to scheme guys open in different coverage shells.

the center was having issues handling the ball but people are on here thinking the QB should have been able to just sling it all around the lot. people are weird.
Beck was having a rough night. I actually found myself saying “just run it” a lot. IIRC we started to force the pass a bit during our lull and it just wasn’t working

So last year it is Dawson the gawd and this year he is not. Rain was a factor and Beck was bad last night. FSU will give us a better sample but let’s not hang him up to dry just yet.

he was struggling, he held the ball a lot but I'm chalking it up to a wet ball. believe he was being cautious and not letting i rip. there were a lot miscues on offense by everyone it was a sloppy game, sloppy weather. thankfully this is a complementary team this year. Defense, Oline and RBs picked up the slack. thats what good teams do

Per usual Dawson was awful in the 2nd quarter. But there were multiple drives in the 2nd half that weren’t his fault. Between CJ’s dropped pass and Beck missing multiple wide open guys, you’re talking about at least 2 more scores.

Yep we are strong in all 3 phases. Hopefully it’s just a blip for the offense but the other two groups played outstanding. Carter Davis has been nothing short of incredible (for the expectations)

It’s time for Shannon Dawson to earn his money. It’s become obvious that our receivers are struggling to get open against better secondaries. We had issues with Notre Dame and now Florida’s defensive backs. Beck is holding the ball too long because guys aren’t getting open. Toney and Daniels are legit but teams are scheming to take them away and we don’t have a third or fourth option right now.

This is where a truly great offensive coach schemes ways to get other guys involved and get his main guys some easy targets. Anyone can call plays when the offensive line just bludgeons opponents and/or Cam Ward is working magic (while pretty much calling the plays himself) The really good coaches find work arounds in these types of situations.

We’re probably not going to play another secondary as good as Florida or Notre Dame for the remainder of the regular season but if we’re serious about a playoff run we’re eventually going to play another team that’s equally talented or more talented than us. There are ways to scheme lesser guys open and force defenses to have to cover more than two players. Dawson needs to get it done.
Its a problem with most Air Raid guys. They live inside the air raid box and just dont seem to want to deviate from it. Its why in my opinion as long as Dawson is here we'll struggle to get guys involved who have a unique skillset that you have to change things up for like a Lofton who finally made a couple plays after 3 games

Dawson sucks, always an excuse for him. Reason why he was a journeyman OC that had to have Dana hold his hand or Cam to be good.

Texas A&M lit up that ND secondary and Purdue did pretty good with lesser talent. I know someone is going to say Purdue is underrated or some bs

Beck need to change the play like Cam did to save us

Right. The Gator run came during a few series’ where we abandoned the run (and of course the unforgivable blown dead call). But when things got tense, we went back to our bread and butter, and stuffed 4 and 6 down their throat. And drove about 80 yards and took like 6-7 mins off the clock.

I’ll chalk it up to it just wasn’t Beck’s night. He dealt with a wet football and field two of the first three weeks.

He made some poor decisions as well. I haven’t rewatched the game yet but from being there, as an example, the failed two pt conversion. He had a man wide open underneath 0. Right in his line of sight.

I am confident he’ll bounce back though.

And fk Cormani McClain.
