Back when Barry was with the Pirates, Lenny Dykstra criticized Bonds for being a “bad teammate“. A week or so later the Mets were playing the pirates and it was a “big” thing as the two “best at the time” in the National league were squaring off. Bonds, a 1-man version of the Miami Hurricanes, never gave a single **** what anybody said about him, and just ignored Dykstra‘s comments in his typical Barry way. Anyway, during the game Dykstra gets a change up and flys out (maybe for the 3rd out of the inning or something). An inning or two later Bonds is up, and is fooled by the exact same change up, only he checks up and bounces it off the wall for a stand-up triple.
The. Most. Impressive. At-bat. I’ve. Ever. Seen. In. My. Life.
Right then and there it settled who was the best. Dykstra proved to be a fraud - in more ways than one. And, the media would spend the rest of Bonds’ career trying not to give Bonds his due credit as arguably one of the greatest players ever. Part…of the reason Griffey, Jr was so beloved was because he was the “acceptable“ anti-Bonds, which was unfortunate because they were both special. (And, A-rod doesn’t get nearly the heat of Bonds and he also is an admitted PED abuser).
