Romberg Gets It

It seems pretty crazy yet here we are.

3-4 with blowout losses to Middle Tennessee and Duke.

We're significantly worse in almost every way than we were last year under the staff that got fired. There was very little roster turnover from last year to this year besides the transfers that the current staff brought in, so it's not the players who just forgot how to play football.
The only explanation I can think of is the “buying -in” aspect.

Same players, yes.
Also, same players that have 7-5’s and ****** losses under their belts with the way things were.

Whether Mario’s way is the “right way” here, we shall see.
But it seems a good portion of Mario’s players aren’t digging Mario’s way, and their effort shows it.

For the record, I don’t like what I’ve seen from the coaches, either.

Even with a pair of saboteurs, Jimmy won 8 games in his first year.... Mario ain't Jimmy especially with his handpicked staff

But we shouldn't have hired him because, what was it, "You are what your record says you are....".

Hilarious take we've seen all weekend from the disgruntled.

Miami had TVD throwing to Rambo and a much-improved Harley last fall. Those two combined for 11 catches for 197 yards in the 2021 match-up, while Restrepo had two grabs for 30 yards and a score.

That's 13 receptions for 227 yards and three touchdowns from three key guys on the field who weren't out there this year—while Van Dyke (who threw for 381 yards and those three touchdowns last year) missed the second half of this game, while his replacement fumbled and coughed up three interceptions—Garcia with HALF of Miami's eight turnovers, including a pick six, while his fumble gave the Blue Devils the ball at the 25-yard line.

Duke also had Gunnar Holmberg at quarterback (who threw for 148 yards and an interception), instead of the feisty Riley Leonard, who took Miami to school a week after he played great in a heartbreaking loss to North Carolina.

Any more brain-busters and reasons to comprehend why last year's 47-10 win at Duke has nothing to do with this year's 45-21 home loss to the Blue Devils?
Whole lot of excuses for getting blown out by a team that doesn’t have a single player Miami would have recruited.

Your reasoning is that Duke’s players got really great and Miami’s all got really bad.

Except that no one has said that. You people don't get that there is a mental aspect of this sport that our locker room is really failing at right now.

.... I think the point is the celebration has not gotten "worse" that it's not just an upside down "U"—but a Dukie player kicked it up a notch by smashing over his knee.
Unfortunately that’s not new either. Doesn’t happen as often as the upside down U, but it’s definitely happened over recent seasons.

If/when Cristobal does get a bunch of dawgs on the team who take losing very personally, it won't be long before he has a mutiny on his hands once the players get fed up with the terrible scheme, game planning, and constant losing to much less talented teams.

Having worked at places with good management and places with bad management - as a rule, the brightest and most talented people are the first to leave when there is bad management because they have no reason to stick around when they have opportunities all over the place. The worst workers, the ones who aren't getting job offers left and right, are the employees that management will reward for having "loyalty" and not chasing better opportunities.

Long story short - for those who think the solution to Cristobals woeful offense and defense is players who care more - Be careful what you wish for.

So what is the theory for how a proven head coach takes a player and now cause him to drop a football? I mean, which drill causes you to now drop a football that you used to be able to hold on to?
What has he really proven? His overall career record is 65-64 now, his record at FIU was 27-47 and was fired after a 3-9 season. All he did at Oregon was pretty much what every other coach has done at Oregon for the last 20-25 years. Oregon has consistently been a top 10-20 program in the country for the past 20+ years with a few seasons as exceptions, even making it to a National Championship game, so Cristobal didn't exactly turn that program around, he essentially kept that Nike machine out there turning.

His tenure has started off roughly and he should be criticized for it. Luckily for him he will have time to prove himself based on the 10 years and $80 mill he was given. But this season is definitely a step back for him.

No amount of pride can overcome bad coaching and ****** scheme/playcalling. Best way to keep Duke from doing those types of gestures is to keep. them. out. of. the. end. zone. I mean what else do you want the players to do, go over there and start a fight, drawing more penalties, then have more people talk about how undisciplined and selfish the team is.
It helps the Defense when the Offense doean't gift Duke the ball in the red zone.

If he was so colossally bad that he can't beat MTSU, he couldn't have gone into Columbus with his own players and won against one of the four elite programs in the country.

Followed by 2 losses to Utah by a total score of 76-17. His career has been a mixed bag so far of great moments and some really low points. There's no arguing that. Keep giving me reasons why he is so great and I'll keep giving you reasons that the jury is still out on him.

Hold up, he lost twice to a 10-win team? GTFOH. Fire his *** NOW. Bring me a coach who HAS NOT LOST.

Romberg conveniently gets HALF of it. You absolutely CANNOT be deemed by this fanbase or yourself as a "hard truths/tell-it-like-it-is" guy if when you cross into blaming NIL then you don't reference $80 MILLION at all.

And it's even moar weak sauce and insane when people use this as a vehicle to attack Ruiz. Were we doing sooo great as a "poor" program in the last 15+ years? Seems like a ton of other programs are doing just fine with NIL. Also, seems like guys like Romberg and Joaquin realllly pick and pull punches depending on how buddy buddy they are with the staff at the time- a tactic that is actually worse than just saying nothing at all.

I'm not on board with Romberg here. Every 18-22 year old kid all over the country is doing the same **** thing win or lose. Us old guys cannot apply our way of thinking to what kids are doing. Instead, you have to adapt. But, anyways, we didn't lose b/c of heart or culture or because we're not tough or don't have enough "dawgs" or "savages," we lost because we can't pick up a blitz, we turned it over 8 times, our QB went down with injury, and we have an offensive scheme stuck in like 2015 or something like that.
Maybe they can't pick up a blitz because they don't put in the extra work required to be better than the blitzer. Maybe they committed 8 turnovers because they aren't putting in the work to keep that to a minimum. It isn't about dogs or tough guys. It's about getting a bunch of guys who have a burning desire to be better than the guy next to them or across from them and are willing to put in the work and sacrifice to achieve it. I don't believe we have seen that type of player at Miami in a very long time with the exception of a few guys.

Part of the problem is there hasn't been a coach who has been willing to rid the team of those guys until they have a large enough group who are willing and have that desire to actually win. I am willing to give Mario the chance to do that.

Keep them out of the end zone? When the "players" hand Duke the ball on a silver platter multiple times, there is only so much you can do as a coach to keep them out of the end zone.

Kevin Steele had really good defenses at Auburn, he can coach, so miss me with the whack scheme nonsense if you are going to reference keep them out of the end zone.

Charlie Strong is a well respected DC, he can coach.

These kids have Jason Taylor and Ed Reed in the building.

Nah it the defense doesn't get the job done im 100% on it's not the coaches.

Jess Simpson DL group just waltzed into Hard Rock, and gave Miami OL group their worst performance of the season. Most hurries and sacks allowed all season and forced multiple TO's.

Had people on here thinking he couldn't coach last season. Hmmm

Common theme around here about alot of the coaches sucking, is they were successful other places before and after they were at Miami.
But D$ said…

So you give Mario 100% of the credit for going 12-2, winning the PAC12 and winning the Rose Bowl.

I wonder how he forgot everything so quickly

Jimbo Fisher won a national championship in our very own conference. Would you be happy if UM had somehow hired him away from TAMU at the end of last season?

I think most rational people would say Jimbos success was built on having generational QB talent and being in a weak conference. He can still recruit top 4 classes year in and year out, but he is a terrible gameday coach who believes an archaic scheme will eventually be successful if he stacks enough talent on the roster.
