Ray Lewis, Is he the greatest hurricane of all time?

No, he's not

as the best 'canes defensive player ever?

yep, he's up there .... but ted hendricks would have something to say about who is the "best ever"

Ted Hendricks changed the way defenses in NFL played from 4-3 to 3-4 with the stork creating havoc. Don't really know who the best Hurricane defensive player is but if it is just at the U or pro career as well,my answers would be different. Sean Taylor has to be in the discussion as well.
No way to really know is there?

Ted Hendricks is Miami's only 3-time All American, at a time when freshmen were not eligible to play. He has his own friggin' award named after him. He set an awfully high standard. While some may come close, you'd be hard pressed to say anyone else is better.

Ask 10 people you might get 10 different players names. We've had so many great players I could never pick one.

I experienced it, knew Ted from class and played against him in HS. He was an amazing player "mad stork"

For those that didn't get a chance to see it live.

Ray is my favorite on the field. He's a coon off of it. Dan Morgan didn't win a championship so he's out of the discussion

Ray is by far th best defensive player and probably the best player ever at the U. Heck he is in discussion as the best defensive player ever in the pros.

Dan Morgan should be in the discussion.

So should Ray Lewis, Warren Sapp, Russell Maryland, etc. etc.

We've had so many, its hard to choose three let alone one.

I've seen them live including The Mad Stork. Ted was and is as crazy a Cane as any of our more modern heroes. Playmaker himself said Ted was Cane before there was Cane. You can't go wrong with any number of Canes as GOAT: Ray, Ed, pick a DT, Bennie, Playmaker ....or Ted. But consider that Ted played DE in college and then moved to outside LB in pros. Long before his time he was the Rush end of today's dream team. If he was coming out today he would go number one in draft and teams would trade for that pick like he was generational QB. Dude was the only player in NFL that Jimmy the Greek gave one point on the spread to the team he was playing on -- and that was merely based on the blocked extra point or filed goal he had in almost every big game. Before NFL all he did was make All American for three years.

Ed, ST, Blades, Marion might all be in running for greatest safety at UM. Ray has competition for MLB. Any of them could lose out to several DTs in discussion about greatest defensive player. Ted was far and away greatest DE ever, with all due respect to Stubbs. He might be the only player who is clearly the greatest at his position in the positions of great Miami players. Greatest RB, WR, TE, QB? Fight would last forever. But Ted? Only Stubbs even gets a wink. Ted was the dog of war that raising havoc is all about. If you watched him play, you understand.

Ray was the best defensive player and best leader in NFL history. Even in his last season, he was the difference for that Ravens team.

As far as Canes, the three guys that best represent Canes football IMO are Michael Irvin, Jerome Brown and Sean Taylor.

Shame on all of you!!

How the fugg isn't Gino Torretta in this **** thread or Vinny Testeverde? And you call yourselves fans...

It's really hard for me to understand anyone who could pick anyone but Ted Hendricks as the best player ever. Everone else mentioned here has at least one other at their position you could make an argument for. He played a half a century ago and and most of us that were fans then until now would have him as the best or in their top two or three.

There are arguments for any number of players.

I'll list an elite group that all share the title as All-Time Canes. I'm sure I missed few. I tried limiting to a smaller list with strict criteria but there are too many players!

Pre-1970
Ted Hendricks
Jim Otto
George Mira Sr.

1970-1982 (pre-championship era)
Chuck Foreman
Dennis Harrah
Jim Kelly
Ottis Anderson

1982-1994 (first championship era)
Bernie Kosar
Steve Walsh
Vinny Testaverde
Gino Toretta
Eddie Brown
Michael Irvin
Melvin Bratton
Alonzo Highsmith
Jerome Brown
Danny Stubbs
Bennie Blades
Cortez Kennedy
Michael Barrow
Jessie Armstead
Warren Sapp
Ray Lewis

1995-2003 (probation thru resurgence)
Edgerrin James
Ken Dorsey
Reggie Wayne
Santana Moss
Ed Reed
Dan Morgan
Vince Wilfork
Andre Johnson
Sean Taylor
Frank Gore
Willis Macghee
Clinton Portis

Is it me or does it seem we have had a player in almost every position "revolutionize" the game at some point in time? This is sick!!! Love to be a Cane!!!

Semper Canes!!!
