The biggest problems we have is the offensive coordinator is calling the pass plays and an offensive line coach giving him the run plays to call which is leading to predictable play call that the defenses can easily recognizeI think @Brooklyndee hit the nail on the head in a pretty fired up post last night. When Miami gets a lead, Cristobal wants Dawson to dial it back to reduce the chance for negative plays. Dawson consistently seems to interpret that as dial it down to zero.
Dawson can be a top OC when he needs to and has a good bag of tricks , but he hasn’t figured out how to run an offense with a lead. All the 4th quarter, FSU was completely selling out to stop the run (everyone knows what our 4th quarter offense looks like). Would have been a good time to catch them with play action on 1st or 2nd down. Instead it was run ,run, obvious pass
situation, punt (fwiw think we actually could have caught them with another flea flicker)
But the other culprit is the players themselves. Defense gets a pass- they were exhausted. Yeah they could have tightened up a bit but the refs were letting FSU get away with everything and calling ridiculous penalties on UM. The offensive players are the ones who are kicking up their feet. I think a key difference personality wise between Beck and Ward is that Ward would not let the offense get complacent, especially because the defense was so bad and no lead was safe. The QB needs to set the tone when the offense has a lead.
The only problem is our run calls are super basic... Nothing that really sets up explosive runs unless there is a complete breakdownDawson has said flat out that Mirabal controls the running game. I’m personally not a big fan of it but it works more often than not.
To add some context to this… my concern is the pre snap self inflicted penalties. They have been drive killers!!!! We had 14 penalties last night!!! Smh. We clean up the penalties people would fear us!A lot of comments without context so here’s the “concern” for me with numbers to show it
Notre Dame:
Miami goes up 21-7 and forces Notre Dame to punt
The next 4 drives we gain 15 yards on 13 plays
South Florida:
The game was a beat down in the final box however Miami goes up 28-6 and forces punt
Next 4 drives combined we gain 66 yards on 13 plays including 2 turnovers
Florida:
We go up 10-0 and our defense is dominating. Forces 4 punts in a row
In the next 6 drives we run 34 plays for 123 yards get a FG and turn it over once
FSU:
We go up 28-3 and force a punt
The rest of the game we run 17 plays for a total of 24 yards
So listen it’s college football. Winning is hard. It’s not PS5 on freshman level
Our defense is routinely putting us in position for kill shots and we are struggling to get it done. Individually it’s not necessarily a big deal and ultimately may not matter but this is the only small alarm bell im concerned with at the moment
Not a “concern” maybe just something worth noting
Totally agree. Its not even an execution issue in my eyes. When we went up 28-3 and FSU threw 8 in the box...Dawson should have continued the easy short to mid range passes. Those completions move the sticks and the clock.A lot of comments without context so here’s the “concern” for me with numbers to show it

Is this true? Mirabal calls running plays and Dawson passing plays? If so, why did Dawson come back? He had the number 1 offense in the NCAA last year. You'd think he could write his ticket for any OC opening and some HC ones as well. The biggest problems we have is the offensive coordinator is calling the pass plays and an offensive line coach giving him the run plays to call which is leading to predictable play call that the defenses can easily recognize
Soooooo you don’t think that this would be readily discussed right after watching a 25 point lead dissipate…I have no issue discussing the obvious 4th quarter blunder. But the only problem I had was the timing. You had jokers talking about this immediately after the game.. we couldn’t even enjoy the win because of the mopes. This was a rivalry game, on the road against a ranked team and posters couldn’t just enjoy the moment. (And we covered! Lol)
Discussing it today I have no issue with.
What part is the overreaction brah?Feels like a lot of overreaction in this thread. I see us doing exactly what NFL teams do once they have a big lead, they just try to run the clock on offense and make the opposing offense work for long drives. This isn’t always fun to watch, but by doing so, we limit mistakes and big plays.
And typically the only way to give up big leads is to give up big plays on defense or commit turnovers on offense.
Well we didn’t have any TO’s, and we made FSU use a lot of clock on their 4th quarter drives. And they ran out of time.
This is pretty much the NFL playbook and why most NFL better in lines are 3-4 points, because coaches are just trying to win and could care less if they win by 20 or 1.
Could it get us into trouble at some point? Definitely. Does it work? Yep.
Team knows it tooA lot of comments without context so here’s the “concern” for me with numbers to show it

No he didnt because if he did there would of been a 20 page thread on it on here. That would be the topic of canes discussion everywhereDawson has said flat out that Mirabal controls the running game. I’m personally not a big fan of it but it works more often than not.
I'm just sick and tired of all this fourth quarter drama - because we shut down our offense when we just get it going good.
It's unnecessary.
We run right up the middle when the middle is stacked with defenders three deep?
Nothing to the outside? Short passes? TE blocks, then drifts out?
I know Mario can put a team together - but the game day - it's like a mental constipation takes over.
How hard is it to continue what's working - just to try to force a quarter in a dime slot?
Mario is going to ***** this run we have going on - up.
Our OC was doing pretty well - it was exciting, and they were rolling. Suddenly - full stop.
I don't give a tinker's dam if it's Marabel or Mario. Someone needs to GTF out of the play calling business - because they're constipated.
I saw Mario when things started looking bad - yelling. Really? You're the coach! You want to sit on a lead?
Try leading.
