PODCAST: Post-game UF takeaways ft. D$ and LuCane

I kept hammering this point on the pod but never actually provided the stat. When you eliminate the QBs, here are the rushing yards for the two teams:

Miami: 22 carries, 131 yards (6 ypc)
UF: 20 carries, 44 yards (2.2 ypc)

That’s kind of a bull**** stat as well.

Most of our rushing yards came in two wildcat plays.

We still can’t run the ball out of our base sets.

We have to rely on a gimmick

The blocking on those runs wasn’t a gimmick, though. They were moving people.

That’s one thing that gets missed about the Dolphins’ success with the Wildcat. What really made it go wasn’t trickery, it was putting two monster first round OL (Jake Long and Vernon Carey) on the same side and mauling people.

It’s not a base formation. It’s done to catch a defense off guard and beat them with numbers.

Also we didn’t maul then on both those plays. The blocking was good on the first one Deejay snuck through a sneaky little crease.

The second one he should have been tackled by two players for an 8 yard gain and they both made very poor tackling efforts

Just realized I had said on podcast we stopped UF to 4.7 yards per play. I had used Miami's number of plays instead of UF's 55, which is a dumb *** error since I have 4 pages of notes covering 55 UF offensive plays. Anyway, average was actually closer to over 5 and a half. Not good. Those two long plays were killer. Baker's gotta focus on bringing the yards per play average way down. All other metrics seem ok, given the circumstances.

What’s BS about it? It’s not like we ran the Fumbleroosky and tricked them. Also, Cam and Deejay missed some big time lanes throughout the night. Our run game will be fine.

People don’t realize missed opportunities like the draw to Cam when we were backed up. He should have split that for 30-50. It’s a new offense - first game - With three freshmen close to the ball - we gave up 10 sacks - had a huge run called back - and we still out rushed the Gaytors. Our run game will be good.

Its Bull****. Name me one team that runs the Wildcat as its base formation? That's because its sort of a gimmick once or twice in a game formation. There's no real threat to throw out of the formation.

There's always missed opportunities where a back might miss a hole.

But the fact that you take away those 70 wildcat yards you see that our rushing average was only slightly better than Florida's. We won't win big until we are able to will a running game out of our base formations.

I'm just trying to keep this realistic. I agree with removing the sack stats when determining rushing performance but then you should also factor in that 74 yards came on the wildcat. We aren't going to lineup in the wildcat all game and run over good teams going forward. That's not going to work.

We have to learn to get push in base formation and make teams truly respect the play action and come downhill hard if we want to win big.

It isn’t. It’s no different than a designed QB draw with an athletic QB. Notice how we stopped their 5 wide version of the Wildcat. It’s basically a running QB. Football. People still have to be blocked. People still have to make tackles. It’s not a fluke. It’s not like it’s a trick play! Dallas took the football and went right at their defense. We blocked them and ran through them. You can’t arbitrarily decide those plays don’t count.

Again - first game, in a new offense, with three Frosh close to the ball, and we still rushed better than them. That’s a good sign. The kinks will get ironed out. The plays were there to be had.... and will be in the future.

Rushing yards don't count unless you tie both arms behind your back and also chain up your ankles, it is known.

I almost started a thread devoted to play action, but I’ll post my thoughts here instead.

I have concerns about play action with this OL, specifically against the gators. I don’t know that our tackles, even with help, can hold their blocks long enough. Combine that with a rFr making his first career start - presumably having some jitters and maybe not as decisive as an experienced guy would be - and it could spell trouble.
Posted this ^^ last week.

I thought deejay did a great job of picking up blitzers and is our biggest non-OL asset in pass protection. I saw him pick up at least 3 or 4 blitzes with ease. You hate to lose him as a checkdown threat, but brevin fills that role.

We won't face (m)any DEs like Fla had, so it should get better. But until these tackles get some time to gel, we need to scrap the play action unless and until a ground game is established.

Agree.

My point is the quoted stats are skewed by those two runs. Which also means the blocking was average or ineffective at best the other plays.

Which was admittedly inaccurate on my part. As other posters have pointed out, there were a number of runs where the TB made the wrong choice and did not run into the open lane.

My only issue on that

My only issue on that stat is thats its misleading... The majority of the yards came on the 2 wildcat plays. I think the o-line will get better but they definitely didn't run the ball as well as I'd hoped

A run is a run, they blocked well on those plays . Plus they had a 60 yard cam Harris run called back as well

That’s not a top 20 team , we knew they were overrated.

Lol what’s a top 20 team?? Y’all think too highly of these rankings. 99% of the teams in the top 25 can be beaten by an unranked team... the difference is only winning and losing. Florida is a legit top 20 team bc they keep winning it’s that simple.
