OT: HBO's Chernobyl

Soviets were incredibly stupid though. Just read up on RBMK reactors. No other country in the world was using graphite as a moderator, much less the numerous other flaws in that design.

British and Americans telling the story of a Soviet disaster. Good series but you can tell early that there are politics involved and they will try to make the soviets look as stupid as they can.
They’re sketchy as ****, and they would had swept all of that under the rug if they could. They’re just shady. They stole our gold medals in 1972. They killed Apollo Creed. I could go on.

Really?

LOL there, Ivan.

You mean they’re trying to make Soviets look bad because they’re otherwise known worldwide for their high consumer engineering standards and commitment to safety.

That’s why Aeroflot is the safest airline in the world.

Only on CIS do you get someone defending a system like soviet socialism where things like Chernobyl can happen and allow a ratchet unsafe system like that and every other shltty thing they build.

Truer words were never spoken. I fact HBO is a bunch of libs, and crazy progressives. I bet if anything they downplay how much the government ****ed up!

Right. Imagine how quickly HBOs content would go to **** with a conservative spin.

I've never seen Band of Brothers. I'll have to check it out. I'm watching Ken Burn's Vietnam War documentary right now. It's awesome.
Way better than Band of Brothers! Nine Inch Nails does the soundtrack mix in with music of that era.

Tremendous. Referencing Aeroflot was Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Well done.

Russian citizens are a great bunch, the Politburo.... Not so much.

You seem to know your reactors, enlighten me if you will. ***ushima is still an issue correct? That reactor is still kicking off death rays from the wave I believe.

This is ridiculous. The Soviets WERE stupid. People with no nuclear fission background were in charge of decision-making. People who did have a nuclear fission background were denying the seriousness of the situation for fear of political reprisal.

We should be giving a Fox News "fair and balanced" treatment of the idiot Russians who came within hours of blowing up a quarter of the planet?

Give me a break.

I haven't watched this series yet, but it's on my list. If anyone is really interested enough to read about the absolute horror that was Chernobyl, I would recommend reading "The Chernobyl Notebook". I read it back when I was working at a nuclear plant, it's written by Grigoriy Medvedev who was Chief Deputy Engineer for unit 1. To rise to a post like this in the Soviet Union was to obtain a lot of political power, not just power plant pull. He was able to observe and speak to many engineers and technicians that would otherwise be shielded from telling their stories. This book is a truly horrifying read if you even have the most basic understanding of power plant fundamentals. To sum it up, they essentially went out of their way to create this disaster. People in positions of power who had no earthly idea what they were doing telling those that did know what they were doing what to do. Then couple that with a reactor design flaw of the graphite rod design that was meant to accelerate reactivity. Then reading about the fire department that was first on site responding to the disaster literally picking up pieces of the graphite that was used for its reactors core......those poor ********. The Soviet Union mulched it's own soldiers and citizens, known as the Chernobyl Liquidators, in that that cauldron to try and cover the whole thing up.

I bet none of u remember the episode where that "Deadliest Catch" guy went fishing at Chernobyl. Looked like a complete ghost town.

So far it's an excellent series.

My only problem with the series itself is that this happened where people speak Russian yet the actors have a British accent. Not English with a Russian accent but a **** British accent lol. I would have almost preferred they speak Russian with subtitles to make it more realistic.

HBO needs to realize we live in a binge TV era. People don't watch scheduled programming anymore. GoT should have been dropped a whole series at a time. With a mini-series like Chernobyl, drop that sh*t all at one time on the app.

i don't understand why people have a problem with the show being in english. i don't enjoy subtitles because you can't even look away from the screen. plus in this case their probably aren't enough quality russian actors to make a high quality poduction of this magnitude.

and hbo doesn't drop it at once for a reason. they need to keep people paying their subscriptions. their business model is a little different than the streaming services.

I remember that, Jeremy Wade. He caught a big *** catfish in one of the reactor ponds.
