I still hope Damari can take some type of a step forward here. I’d like for us to hit on the local elite talent we bring in.
Mario definitely gives the impression he is a body type first, performance second evaluator.Being a college nickel used to mean you were t an NFL player. Now? They love seeing the skillset...especially the run support and tackling as well as the communication skills required. They draft these guys earlier and earlier. Teams also like projecting them to safety, too, depending on scheme. Im not saying that's Scott...but the player type definitely is projectable to the pro game.
As for Miami, I don't think - and I don't think the staff does either - we have a good nickel on the roster.
We have a lot of boundary and field guys, but the best nickel was probably Brown and he's not been that good yet. Brantley is an outside guy. This guy makes sense. We've got good depth and competition at CB and shouldn't have a problem.
He is but now we have another player that has all conference potential at the position as well, it’ll be a great position battle come fall which should bring out the best in those guys. Damari can also play safety as well so we’ll see how things play out.Damari Brown not playing nickel?
I’ve always compared Mario to Butch, they are very similar in coaching style, philosophy, and player body type. Both considered none game day coaches, both great at evals and recruiting, both known for their strict disciplinary, player accountability personality.Mario definitely gives the impression he is a body type first, performance second evaluator.
Doesn't make him wrong.
I believe Butch DAW GAWD was same.
My man @SWFLHurricane knows whatz up.
"he's a nickel"After watching a couple games, his speed stands out. He plays fast and he is fast. Looks like a legit 4.4 guy at 6’, 190. Great blitzer, too. He’s a little stiff with the ball in the air, which hurt him outside. But he looks right as a nickel.
2nd worst rated defender on Auburn last year.I’m just getting in here, im not sure if it was mentioned but this is a former second team all sec player, heard he excelled playing in the slot, moved outside and struggled a bit. Got injured, never played at Houston, has the potential to be an all ACC type player. This is low key a huge pick up if dude can bounce back
Was he out all spring at Houston?I’m just getting in here, im not sure if it was mentioned but this is a former second team all sec player, heard he excelled playing in the slot, moved outside and struggled a bit. I'm not sure on that, I just know he never played at Houston. Was he out all spring at Houston?
Well he's only been there since January. When you said he never played at Houston, I assumed you meant he didn't participate in springI'm not sure on that, I just know he never played at Houston.
Miami feels they landed a player with the talent to be a Top 100 pick. Whether he gets there remains to be seen. But this is a guy Zac Etheridge wanted to coach again.
In 2023, Scott was the best punt returner in the SEC and a nickel projected to go pro. Auburn worked aggressively to bring him back. In 2024, with Etheridge moving to Houston, Scott played outside corner and struggled. By the end of the season, he was on the bench. He lost all confidence, and he even had trouble fielding punts. He entered the Portal to reunite with Etheridge at Houston and has now followed him to Coral Gables.
The first thing you notice with Scott is that he looks the part. He’s 6’, 190+ and runs well (10.9 100M in high school). In 2023, he was good in man, excelled as a blitzer and stepped up in big games (see Ole Miss ). He also finished 8th nationally in punt returns. This is the version of Scott that the staff hopes to unlock:
The nickel is a critical position in Hetherman’s defense. At different times, he’s expected to play man, zone, blitz, defend screens, and fit the B-gap (between the guard and tackle) in the run game. In the spring, Charles Brantley, Chris Ewald, and Isaiah Taylor played that role. None of those guys have Scott’s size and speed, nor do they have his experience in the position.
There is no guarantee we will get the ‘23 version of Scott. Like a lot of guys in this Portal class, he has something to prove. But if he can solidify that spot, he will complete a total physical upgrade of the secondary.
he kinda reminds me of Couch from like 2 years ago think he can be that and possibly moreAfter watching a couple games, his speed stands out. He plays fast and he is fast. Ask and you shall receive:Some "hot take artists" on this board are so **** mopey.
They'll post all kinds of in-depth analysis on Keontre Scott's stats in order to build some case for "he can't play on the outside" or "he sucks".
Meanwhile, I point out that he had an ankle injury in 2024, and people act like that isn't a thing.
I mean, we would NEVER take a transfer from another school who is recovering from an injury, right?
At the end of the day, I'll trust Etheridge to figure out where Keontre Scott will play, instead of all the armchair analysts who have Googled every stat and are dissecting this kid's official-official punt return ranking in the NCAA and SEC.
**** all that. Has he recoverd? Can he play? That's all that matters.
We ****ed around and found out last year with "I think we have enough talent in the defensive backfield". This year, I want some overkill.
I know that people were ****ed about our return game last yearidk man. I like the idea of him being only a dedicated return specialist. There's more draft value in being a dynamic return man than there is at being an okay db.
Virginia Tech rounds out the top 3 if we are in the running. I would put them ahead of us until we have a proven product, honestly.Top 2 with Clemson. SMU is up there also
Probably the same people that hated Cam Ward because he had small hands and was a turnover machine. Every player not in a UM uni is the best. The fact that some are questioning Beck's talent is wild a healthy and confident Beck is a round 1 qb. If his last name was Manning or Sanders maybe people would love him moreSome "hot take artists" on this board are so **** mopey.
