No Pena, No Haulcy, No LB, No DTs, No #1 WR…

I get auburn (is he '23 auburn or '24 version) and bonner (more long term promise), but if Marion doesn't have people at least a little excited then you're just choosing to be miserable
- Since 2022, he hasn’t recorded more than 56 receiving yards against a P4 team.
- He’s recorded 100 yards just once in his career, against Vanderbilt in 2021 (102).
- In 2022, he had one game of 50+ receiving yards
- Last season, he had two games of 50+ receiving yards, one of which was Southern Illinois
- He recorded 1 catch or fewer in 7/12 games last season.
- He was targeted twice or fewer in 6/12 games last season

I think being excited about him as a returner is certainly merited. Heck even a gadget player.

Now he graded out a 67.5 at receiver on PFF, which is a little better than average. There’s potential sure, But don’t fool yourself thinking he’s our answer at WR.

I don't get the infatuation with having to get a portal WR, or trashing each and every get we do get in the portal.

if a true #1 hit the portal (Pena was not that), then sure it would hav been nice, but we have recruited WR's very well the last few cycles, just because they haven't played doesn't mean they can't

Can we delete this hot take thread now becuz it didnt fit the OP’s schedule?!?!!?!

Here is the truth about your perception of reality. It's a sweet, naive fairy tale.

In 2025, if you want a "true" WR1 in the portal, you backchannel him into the portal. Since January, we have been told this player was coming. Rumors abound that it was an SEC kid, and how Beck would help with that process.

Well, the portal is closed and that did not materialize. Staff didn't get it done. Anything else you hear is bull**** and excuse making.
Preach. The spin started earlier this week. The staff's "plan" for this portal was a colossal dud and now we have to pray it doesn't cost us a CFP birth for second year in a row.

We have the #4 portal class in the country.

My apologies, please resume lining up on the bridge. We all jump together in T-20.

Brother, I am with you on 99% of the threads and posts. I hate mopery. But forget the portal rankings -- which are because we had such a strong Winter portal -- and focus on this question: Did we fill the holes we needed to fill? The answer is clearly no. This is just like the DB and DT holes last off cycle. We needed more than we got.

I really hope Mario has some grad transfers lined up who are transferring outside the portal process after they graduate in May. Because we still have gaps.

fill according to who? people on this board?

our biggest fixes needed in the offseason were

1) fire dc / hire a good one - done
2) find a new qb - got the best qb in the portal
3) completely revamp the DB room - done (probably best db portal class in country)
4) get LB depth - got bonner today, superstar? no but were there superstar options? idk
5) get a kicker - got auburn today - argue about whether he's good enough sure, but it was filled
6) WR depth - we got CJ Daniels, Marion, and tbd if more
7) DT - tbd

We did , go look the last two years been solid recruiting at wr . The board just don’t want to reley on rs freshman’s and true freshman’s

Who are all these elite transfers we missed out on? I’m not asking to come off as a Mario apologist. I’m asking because I was majorly underwhelmed with the names that entered the portal this last go-around. I get wanting a “true #1 WR,” but if there’s not one available, how you can you realistically be upset by that? And yes, I’m aware that back channeling exists (pause), but again, where were all these elite transfer players?

Just 4 hours later and we land a LB, a coveted WR in the portal, and a starting kicker.

Relax and go outside, touch some grass
the fact you guys pump your chest over this type of mediocrity makes me sincerely hope you all have different mindsets in real life and just are the truest most pathetic homers about the canes but are different in real world

All 3 of these players are depth pieces at best

We miss more on guys who were SUPPOSED to enter the Portal than we did with actual Portal entrants. Though we DID **** up with D'Antre Robinson and at least one safety.

Not sure how you call a kicker a depth piece.

And Keelon Marion will not just be a depth piece, as he will be important at both WR and special teams returner. He's actually an All American return man.

Also would not be surprised if Bonner starts, but that may be more of an indictment against our current LBs.
