No Pena, No Haulcy, No LB, No DTs, No #1 WR…

We also failed Carson Beck if we’re being totally honest. Relying on JoJo, Carr and Malachi Toney is absolutely criminal and unfair to both Beck and the WR room. That to me is my biggest gripe of the offseason. We have one veteran in there, and it’s not like he lit the world on fire at LSU.

Hes going to have 3 months to try and get in sync with these guys where half of them are still trying to learn the nucances of playing CFB and what it really takes to play WR. Theres going to be alot of growing pains in September

I refuse to believe Dennis Smith is as bad as some people say he is here. If it was so blatantly obvious, there’s no way Mario can be that blind and dumb to not move on.

Mario has made plenty of poor decisions but he typically recognizes them and moves on.

So why is it that Dennis Smith is apparently the negative catalyst anytime something bad happens yet Mario hasn’t moved on?

Not sure why people can’t grasp this concept:

I like Moore, Trader, Toney, Daniels very much. Actually Upshaw is one of my favorites from the class

But you can still be like “what the **** are we doing” when the goal is the playoffs

We lost the TOP 6 receiving yards leaders from last year and the best QB that’s suited up here in at least 40 years

Help us Corey Heatherman you’re our only hope
Jo Jo is going to be really, really good IMO. And any slot that can walk and chew bubble gum should eat in Dawson’s offense. We’ll add at least 1 WR with P4 production. I understand the concern based on unknowns, but personally am not worried about the offense. It’s a CFP capable offense. A top QB and Oline with solid skill players.

The defensive positions are more concerning to me. We need a DT for depth (probably down to Fely there?), a LB (which I think we’ll get Bonner, who at least has good physical traits), and a good S (probably not getting our first or second choice there). The D will be much better this year just with competent coaching alone but still needs a couple pieces.

One last thing….this reminds me a little bit of the times when we and other programs have good recruiting classes, but most of the kids commit early in the process and there aren’t many signing day fireworks. Those classes are ALWAYS thought of differently than the ones with big flips and NSD decisions, even though that’s stupid. The kids are who they are, it doesn’t matter when you get them. People in this world have massive recency biases. So while I’m not trying to sugarcoat the spring window, it wasn’t as good as we wanted (at least not yet, I should say) and the staff clearly whiffed on kids they wanted, you have to remember we got a lot of talent in the previous window. Like, the 6th best portal class in the country.

It’s funny, if we got literally zero kids in the fall window and then signed Lucas and Beck and Poyser and Blay and Daniels etc etc in the last week, the board would be going nuts. But since we added them in December and didn’t supplement much in this window, it’s a catastrophe.

Hopefully before this thing is over over, we can get another couple kids. But don’t lose sight of the talent we did get a few months ago. It’s substantial.

Also you're right it's a waist of money to go get Beck and tell him he has to throw the ball to a bunch of freshman WRs

Worst spring portal of the Mario era?

Norvell had an offseason like this after his best season, which also ended in disappointment. He thought going undefeated would cause players to fall over themselves rushing to join his program. In the end, they didn’t have the funds or the traction with players, despite a historic season.

Mario had the #1 draft pick and couldn’t make the 13 team playoff. Is this hurting him?

What’s the issue here.
Wins don’t matter like I always said. You have to recruit relentlessly. At the same time there are some schools not ******* around either that want to win. It’s competitive asf on the trail now. This ain’t the bama Saban era where it was easy for Nick.

All fair points and I’m a much bigger Dawson fan than a lot of people on the board

You could be right and spring portal can be a ***** because less talent usually gets more money with less competition for services

We will have our answers eventually

I know it is a long shot (for a true difference maker at WR) but people needed to submit their paperwork by midnight yesterday. Schools have 48 hrs to process the paperwork. People will continue to trickle into the portal through Monday.

I DONT WANT TO HEAR EVERYTHING IS DENNIS SMITHS FKN FAULT lol Mario is a major control freak about every detail. Hes the main face of UM recruiting.

Tbh I don’t even put much stock in the 48hrs thing

The portal is never really closed there’s clearly loopholes everywhere

Here's the reality.

A true #1 receiver never entered the portal.

Trebor Peña is a slot receiver and we likely didn't want to commit that much money to someone when Malachi Toney showed up big.

We can get mad all we want, we have a young WR corps who needs to perform. That's it. We have a strong transfer in CJ Daniels and two very young but talented receivers. If Jojo ends up balling out then none of this will matter.
And Carr coming back helps us out in a good way as well.
