I do understand that..but I mean, it is what it is..whats the point in being so emotional.

Because we were the FIRST all-Nike school. We **** and moan about "oh I wish that adidas would make us a priiiiiiority", but we were a legacy school with Nike before Beta Blake started undermining the relationship.

I guess I’m falling into the trap of the 20,000 words— but I have a legitimate
Q:

I’ve seen a lot of grousing about Adidas on this board for years and I’ve never been able to surmise why it is that fans hate our adidas gear or deal….

Anyone care to enlighten???
Nike looks more cool, that’s it thats all. The check looks cooler on the uniform

Sorry for the long, analytical response, but:

Ppl who know me or who r in my DM know I’m fair & equitable. I call out Nike on b.s & I’ve praise Adidas on certain things; however, when I’m extremely dogmatic like a pit bull that’s latched on to a bone, that’s for a good reason & those reasons typically come to fruition later.

I’ve been successful in business b/c I pay attention to even some of the most minute details b/c I believe small details add & create the bigger picture. So y have I been dogmatically against Adidas?

1. Trust. I’ll go back to 2015 once again; when we signed the “flagship” contract, it specifically outlined that we would be the flagship of the State of Florida & ACC, meaning no team’s Adidas contract either in FL or ACC would supersede ours. Exactly 2 yrs later, UL contract superseded ours & an outside entity had to let Blake James know Adidas was in violation of what we signed (it was reported here on CIS regarding the turmoil under Blake’s tenure).

2. Apparel. Forget for a moment that our apparel’s quality & quantity is limited w Adidas, but to complicate matters more, we had no royalties. As I’ve tirelessly had to explain, apparel contracts r not simply $ for $; it’s broken into:
•Cash
•Equipment
•Off-field gear for players

Majority is tied into equipment & off field gear which means a school really earns its $$ via:
•Cash Allotment from contracts
•% of sales from branded apparel
•incentives/bonus for qualifying for certain feats

Hence y TV contracts & conference affiliation is so important b/c that’s 100% revenue. With the limited quantity of apparel available for retail + 0% of royalties, that’s earned $$ we lost on. I’m sure the next contract will include royalties, however, as I’ve taken a gander at both UTenn & PSU’s contracts which will include this language.

3. Injuries. OK, this one is tricky b/c to be frank, there’s not a single company, brand that doesn’t have injuries associated w it. There’s been a ton of ACL & achilles injuries wearing Nike cleats. With that said, there’s a real concern w Adidas American Footwear. I wanted my boy to grant me access to a certain report, but unfortunately it’s industry info only; but, between The Chinese Brands like Anta/Li Ning, Puma, & Adidas, they r heads & shoulders above brands like Nike, Reebok, or even New Balance when it pertains to lower injuries. (Pause)

While Adidas is great from their speed cleats, futbol boots, & even race spikes, for w/e reason their technology often contradicts sharp, hard cut movements at the football and even basketball levels.

Here are all the lower extremity injuries off the top of my head since we’ve switched to Adidas:
•Fletcher (Foot)
•Messidor (Foot)
•Edwards (Foot)
•Kirby (ACL)
•Owens (ACL)
•Cager (ACL)
•Choc (ACL)
•Gordinier (ACL)
•Richards (Hamstring/MCL)
•Walton (Ankle)
•Donaldson (Leg/Ankle)
•Herndon (ACL)
•Perry (ACL)
•Rousseau (Ankle)
•Irvin II (MCL)
•Jaquon (Hamstring)
•Polendy (MCL)
•Steed (ACL)
•Chaney Jr (ACL)
•Keontra Smith (Leg)
•Gaynor (Knee)
•Zion (Knee)
•Rivers (lower leg)
•Citizen (ACL)
•Damari Brown (foot)
•Richards (leg)
•Upshaw (Foot)
•Lofton (Leg)

I know I’m missing more, but more concerning are a lot of these were non contact, & non game injuries, as well. This is not uncommon, & a certain celebrity b4 he was paid hush up $$, was going to do an injury doc w Sebastian Telfair to expose Adidas’ long history of American Athletes not being the same after wearing their shoes over a period of time. Again, we for sure had some injuries pre-Adidas like Cooper, Gore, Reddick, Fortson, but on a per capita level, it’s not close.

4. Partnership. Adidas has a current partnership with TT via Pat Mahomes. They’ve deepened their presence & relationship w/ ASU via James Harden. They were able to overbid for UTenn due to Candace Parker being on their board. They have a UL alum heading their marketing dept. KU is their crown jewel for basketball. Adidas has turned up the heat & reinvigorated their relationship w IU due to Fernandez.

Adidas doesn’t have the bandwidth to promote multiple brands or players at one time (e.g. see Adidas put all their eggs in the Ant Edwards’ basket while guys like Dame, Spida, Mobley get pushed to the back). They also have a propensity to pay special attention to their new toys (e.g see the red carpet treatment given to us in 2015 vs. the purple carpet treatment given to UW).

I recall UW fans flexing how well they were treated, & how they felt so prioritized; & wouldn’t u know since 2023,

Now, to be fair, there’s a lot of butt hurt UW fans that r satisfied w Adidas, not b/c of Adidas, but b/c they hate Oregon. Lmao. The point is, every school that had the Nike experience realize after about 4-5 yrs after the buzz dies, so does the merch & the quality of the merch. I saw one UW fan try to justify this as saying Adidas is still a start up, football brand compared to Nike. Lol.

Listen, ppl will say “whoever pays” we should go w, & that’s a very short sighted view. It’s short sighted b/c u have to know how that contract works. $119m over 10 yrs looks & sounds good, but how is that $11.9m broken up? Are there bonuses/incentives? What’s the % split on branded products? Etc etc.

A few things to emphasize in this excellent and comprehensive post.

1. The injuries - remember when certain CIS posters would claim that UHealth doctors were incompetent and were the root-cause of all these injuries? Yeah, good times, right? The reality is that if a player heals up AND THEN PUTS THE ADIDAS SHOES ON AGAIN, then he might, JUST MIGHT, suffer another injury...if the shoes are a contributing factor. A lot of CIS posters like to claim "I just want results" when it comes to recruiting, and yet we are staring at the evidence...and then yapping about how adidas will give us $500K more cash (yay?) and $1M more of their defective equipment. Hey, while we're at it, can we insist that adidas throw in some warm blankets riddled with smallpox?

2. The key-person relationship - I understand getting a popular athlete to endorse the brand, but adidas collects key people to enforce an ongoing contractual agreement that stifles future competitive bids and makes the re-ups a "done-deal" where the fix is in long before each company can make a presentation. I'm not a fan of this at all. In fact, I remember that one of the biggest doubts as to whether we could land Mario was...adidas vs. Nike. Now, I'm glad Mario is willing to wear the same adidas polo 365 days a year over his non-adidas loafer, but we should never have any fear as to who we can recruit or hire based on apparel contracts.

3. The money - over and over and over again, we have people show up to these Nike-adidas threads to tell us about alllllll that money we make from adidas. Which, of course, isn't true. Now, to make that little crybaby Calidip**** happy, YES, there is "value" to all of the equipment, player apparel, and marketing that is included in these seemingly gaudy advertised contract values. Sure. But if Nike values each football helmet at $1,000 and adidas values each football helmet at $1,500 at the time the contract is signed, the advertised contract value doesn't mean ****. I've attached numerous comparative university apparel contracts, and the ONE COMMON ELEMENT is that the cash compensation is just a few million per year. Even merch-king Oregon doesn't make more than $5M cash per year on the apparel, at least not in advertised contract value payments. So the reality is this: the CASH MONEY that you make on apparel deals is a tiny fraction of what we can make from conference revenue sharing, success-based playoff payouts, and ticket-sales/concessions-parking/booster-donations. The realit is that we should choose THE BETTER BRAND, even if it costs us a couple hundred thousand in cash, because we will more than make up the difference in other areas.

4. The abusive partner relationship - I know some people will not like that description, but what else do you call a situation where we get "love-bombed" (remember how much love adidas showed Miami in the first few months), then we get ignored, then adidas falls for the hot-new-thing (Louisville, Tennessee, I can keep going, I'm not trying to make anyone jealous), and then finally we are led to believe if only we get a face-lift and tummy tuck (CFP playoffs and NCAA tournament) then SURELY our partner will come back to give us the love and attention that we have been craving. And it's all just a bunch of bull****. I hate to say it, but adidas has established its pattern of being an abusive boyfriend FOR DECADES. And all of the "love me daddy adidas" posts that I see on this board falls into the same predictable cycle. Seriously. You may not like the metaphor, but you cannot deny its truth. Go back in this thread and the other Mega-Nike-adidas thread...and count the number of Miami posters who try to tell us "it will be different this time, adidas reeeeeally loves us, adidas has learned its lesson, adidas will be loyal to Miami now, adidas has CHAAAAAANGED." If I had a nickel for every woman I've listened to who told me "he can change, I can change him", I would have more money than Elon Musk.

Facts. Hard facts, but facts nonetheless.

Because we were the FIRST all-Nike school. We **** and moan about "oh I wish that adidas would make us a priiiiiiority", but we were a legacy school with Nike before Beta Blake started undermining the relationship.
Again, I understand what we were and what we've done.

But it still worth acting Ike a bunch of ******* over "adidas vs nike"?

You don’t seriously think that’s what I was saying, do you?

First of all, I was being facetious when I said that. Secondly, many of us have been talking for a long time about Adidas fan gear. Relly and TOC are aware and have backed me up in the fact that Adidas’s women’s gear is practically nonexistent. TOC mentioned lululemon, and I made an offhanded comment to him just reinforcing a point (again, which we’ve been discussing for probably a year in another thread) about how difficult it is to find women’s Canes gear.

Not sure why this bothers you so much. Women make up a substantial percentage of our fan base, and Adidas and UM are missing out on a good deal of income by not properly considering us.

Lulu or bust.

Lulu or bust.
Lulu would be nice just because their stuff is comfortable, they have lots of pockets, and it lasts better compared to most stuff these days. But speaking for women, we really don't care, we just want options. It doesn't take a genius to figure out why we tend to just wear our team colors instead of actual fan gear, and we would prefer to support our school, for obvious reasons.

Relly knows that one reason I want Nike is because Nike Women's Apparel group blows away Adidas. And even for those in here who don't care about women, I would hope that they at least care about more revenue to UM, because we're missing out on a huge segment of the population.

Vuori it is.

I prefer to wear the apparel brand of the school for the reasons you mentioned. I don’t get the same chest pounding angina some of the board gets re: Adidas vs Nike, but if given the choice I’d pick Jordan Brand, as I have discussed with @Rellyrell numerous times and for all the reasons he outlines and we are discussing.

If I must venture away from the current Adidas because their stuff looks like or feels like or fits like ****, then I follow your path to comfort and look.

I’m eager to see who takes the board blame from beta Blake when we reup with Adidas in spite of all the alphas running things.

If Mas Co is in bed with Adidas for obvious reasons then maximize it to OUR benefit. We’ve already missed Adidas Miami Messi X Mali #10 opportunities and will do so again with Mensah. Do something to show us why we should want this partnership and how we are better.

Ma'am, please just breathe. I'm a natural smart *** and I look for ways to amuse myself to battle my demons. For me laughter is my only escape. I'm sorry if you thought I was being serious. I definitely wasn't as anyone else would tell you I'm aware of pretty much everything when it relates to us as a program and I'm also aware of the shortcomings of Adidas and many brands for that matter. For me, I was just making myself laugh. I apologize if I didn't think that through well enough to where it offended you. Thank you for supporting the program and have a great weekend.

Sidenote, to bury myself a lil further I didn't mean ******** over like not considering... It's the dog in me. I'm fond of the visuals of lululemon on women. HENCE where this went off track.

Lol, my breathing is just fine. The last thing that would ever offend me is some dumb **** on a message board.

This would be a fairly straightforward conversation if a bunch of adidas-bros would stop repeating 12 year old myths that Beta Blake invented to justify his actions.

If you like adidas, buy adidas. If you like Nike, buy Nike. I don't give a ****.

But for my alma mater, whose first major point of nationwide validation was becoming the first all-Nike university, I would like to see us reinstate the relationship that was derailed by Beta Blake.

There are serious and legitimate issues to address (injuries), there are stupid-****ing-match issues that should be avoided (the money!, which will be relatively equivalent, though could be better if one company gives us a 15% royalty rate), and there are borderline-retarded issues that should indicate the motivation of the individual (Nike treated us poorly, waaah waaaah).
