Before I even get into it…I think it’s a pipe dream. We have all been forced, barring a miracle *cough* blow out/BOT awakening *cough*to resign ourselves to Folden as our coach next year.

A friend of mine from college lives in NYC. Went down last weekend and at a party met a guy in law school, pursuing a career as a sports agent. We talked sports for a bit, mainly NFL and NHL. Someone brought up NCAA football and who will win the NC, I just basically said I cant even talk about college FB or I’ll jump out a window. Naturally they ask “who’s your team?” I say UM, I get a couple generic statements weren’t a lot of sports nuts there) but the guy I was originally talking with says “word on the street is Golden is toast”.

Now at this point, about a million things go through my mind (excitement. Anger. Confusion. Disbelief.) What does he know??? Could it be true??? Like a crackhead my heart races as if I’m about to find my next score…is he connected??? I catch myself as I have before when I see a rumor on twitter and pray Golden is on the block, but then realize it’s BS. I basically just figured he had seen something mentioned online/twitter and took it as gospel. Was a lot out there the last couple weeks, but we have all basically come to the conclusion we are stuck with him. This is all probably still true, but I’ll admit it…I took the bait.

Asked him what he knew…said he’s had a couple internships and right now was working at a spot in NJ near Metlife stadium. Said it’s a smaller outfit called Priority Sports but he’s working with Mike Tannenbaum (former Jets GM). OK, cool. Not really seeing the connection though. I ask what he’s heard on Golden, then he backtracked and just basically said “nothing really” but then said that UM has come up in discussion several times over the last couple of months at their office. Tannenbaum reps several NBA/NFL coaches and has been talking up guys taking college jobs vs NFL (great $$$ at the bigger schools, better perks, built in prestige of being an NFL coach in recruiting) which I guess makes sense. He said “Tannenbaum has been hammering Hue Jackson to get out of Cincy and pursue a college job. Hue has charisma…met him once. Of the coaches I met he was the most personable…bordered on ****y but just a guy you wanted to like.” Insightful, I thought. Funneled him back to UM. Asked what’s been said? “Just been mentioned as a spot to keep an eye on. Mike had spoken about spots that could open up and mainly was focusing on UM, Nebraska, Arkansas, and Florida. He just thinks college could be a great way for some guys to re-build their brand and recharge their batteries, so to speak.” Does he have any UM contacts? “not that I know of. The only time he ever said anything that specific about UM was after the Jets lost to the Dolphins on MNF. He talks to Rex Ryan regularly and brought up that Rex knows he is getting fired after the year. Thought he was born to coach at UM.” I asked what the connection was between that game and the hurricanes, other than the whole Miami thing. He says “he talks to ross all the time, ross loves rex. Thinks fins would pursue him if (we all know now its WHEN) they fire philbin. Mike just said he could see rex going to Miami but if he did, would tell him to pursue UM if it was open. Mike knows rex really well, and just doesn’t know if he really should take another NFL job. Would immediately become one of the stars of the college football, media would fall over themselves trying to sell Rex as a rival for ‘the big boys’ (saban, miles, fisher, etc).”

Feel free to neg me or whatever. Not trying to troll, not trying to create any false expectations. I’m not really sure expectations are even warranted. I just thought it was interesting that an active sports agent for NFL coaches (tannenbaum) would still consider UM as a job in high regard. Maybe there is still hope. Would have been better if the guys said tannenbaum completely bashed golden and that he is a laughingstock within those circles (probably is anyways) but I didnt want to badger the guy anymore and look like the obsessed fan that I am.

nothing is a lie...and from what the guy said, there was really barely 'smoke' other than Tannenbaum's interest. I just found it pretty interesting that he viewed college football, and specifically UM, as a top spot. I wasn't even going to post the info because I wasnt looking to start an uproar and throw gasoline on the misery fire...but what the f*kk.

I think we would all gladly take either of those guys...I remember the days where we were mad if a guy was considering leaving for the nfl...now we would kill to have someone come in for 1-2 yrs and bolt if it meant a winning season and a bcs bowl game...

not a knock on the OP but anyone with the slightest amount of football awareness/knowledge and certainly anyone actually in the industry can see that Al Golden is a dead man walking.

so yeah I'm sure they see the UM job coming open sometime question is when will the admin wake up and hire a real coach

I think Rex Ryan could be a home run at UM. Not sure the admin would go for it though - a little too brash. He'd kill recruiting in south florida with his persona.

I hope USCe blows us out. Maybe just maybe we fire Al. If we have to be an Adidas school so be it. Rex at Miami would be a dream come true.

Chad Thomas, AQM, McCord, Grace, Harris, Jackson, etc blitzing every single down? Yes please.

The Hue Jackson rumor has legs ... But with the number of NFL openings likely this season, he'll probably get a gig. I'd guess Atlanta or Oakland for him.

****, he may even get the Dolphins job.

people think he should be fired but he has allies within the program. my friend played under butch and said Ray Lewis and Michael Irvin like him. Said Ray Lewis "loves" him actually. Also said schelleberger loves him. My friend said "I think he is a better recruiting coordinator or AD" but he is def getting another year unless South Carolina is a massacre. he said golden develop guys into NFL players e.g. doresett, duke, flowers, Denzel, Walford. but he just never wanted him. He wants butch back but said dont believe people in the program hate this guy. he has called around, golden has supporters. We spoke yesterday so this is fresh info.

I agree, but it has taken me a while to even want to consider someone other than Butch. Rex just seems to have the type of personality that would endear him to the old school Canes. And could you imagine that man's style of defense with the athletes he could recruit. A lot would depend on the quality of OC he could bring, but this is becoming the second most intriguing potential hire. Too bad this has almost no chance of happening.

I don't think UM will ever be "dead" as long as the NCAA/Admin doesn't cut the program. All it takes is a good coach to come down and re-establish "the state of miami" and it might be the easiest place to win in college football. Easy division, easy conference, surrounded with talent, and just the location in general. This school will always draw interest to coaches who want to win but they will always leave for the NFL because we can't pay them or they just want to coach in the NFL or whatever. It's just having someone at the helm to hire the right guys everytime.. its not that hard. We will be back within 1-2 years of getting the right guy

my friend claimed "VA and Pitt were inexcusable but you were looking to win with a true fresh QB and 2 juco's and 2 true fresh in your DT rotation." Still, i aint buying that but its interesting that people can even still be willing to give golden another year.

Rex Ryan? Not gonna happen. All of Alfredo's gameday Dockers are size 52. Rexy is in a 48 waist right now. The new expenditure won't be justifiable in the eyes of the BOT.
