Those are good points, but I will counter with this. Failure to recruit at one position can destroy a team's hopes, regardless of the overall blue chip strength. Miami still had a strong defense in 2006. They (in theory) had an extremely high blue chip ratio at RB, TE, and QB. But Larry Coker failed to recruit wide receivers. Not just blue chip players, but sheer bodies. We started the year with just six scholarship wide receivers and we were down to 3 healthy wide receivers by the midpoint of the season (we started 5-2), and we were only 1-4 the rest of the way.Bullsh't.
This was the 16th ranked team in the preseason.
Had a QB that was getting plenty of first round hype.
And one of only 15 teams in the country that had that magical blue chip ratio > 50%.

Yeah, about that...

You don't need a Bama-caliber roster to beat average teams like UNC or Texas A&M. You need that kind of talent to win championships, not money games against Middle Tennessee State.
Coming into the season most fans expected us to lose 3-4 games a year. The way we're playing this year, we're staring 6-7 losses in the face. This is no surprise as Cristobal routinely lost to teams he shouldn't have at Oregon. He's not a good coach, and the way he views football (run-heavy, slow paced) leaves little margin for error.
Hopefully he has an epiphany and changes the way he views football. Even with a talent advantage over 90% of the teams we play, X's and O's will matter.
Now let's look at this year's team, because I've done a lot of posting on blue chip ratios and overall numbers. We're strong at TE and RB, on paper. We're strong at safety. We're strong at quarterback. Here's where we are not strong at.
OFFENSIVE LINE:
| Jalen Rivers | 0.9425 |
| Delone Scaife | 0.9378 |
| Laurence Seymore | 0.9248 |
| Michael McLaughlin | 0.8938 |
| Ryan Rodriguez | 0.8851 |
| John Campbell | 0.8804 |
| Matthew McCoy | 0.8719 |
| Jonathan Denis | 0.8600 |
| Chris Washington | 0.8552 |
| Anez Cooper | 0.8541 |
| Logan Sagapolu | 0.8500 |
| Ousman Traore | 0.8500 |
| Justice Oluwaseun | 0.8400 |
| Zion Nelson | 0.8395 |
| Jakai Clark | 0.8364 |
CORNERBACK:
| Al Blades | 0.9556 |
| Khamauri Rogers | 0.9525 |
| Chris Graves | 0.9365 |
| Isaiah Dunson | 0.8958 |
| Te'Cory Couch | 0.8954 |
| D.J. Ivey | 0.8926 |
| Tyrique Stevenson | 0.8900 |
| Daryl Porter Jr. | 0.8900 |
| Jadem Harris | 0.8819 |
| Malik Curtis | 0.8572 |
With a weak offensive line, strengths at quarterback and running back are negated. With insufficient recruiting at cornerback, the defense as a whole is affected.
