MaRiO NeEds his OwN GuYs

I realize he had his flaws...he knows more than anyone. But what I love about him aside from them is, the ability to work on those flaws as time went on. You could see in 99 and 2000 that they improved. His use of the clock vs FSU in 2000 on the final drive was evidence. The guy had alot on his plate for 6yrs. @WanderFranco will tell you in ref to your discussion with him about South FL kids...Butch went against the grain and recruited all over the country. Go count how many quality kids we had from other regions from 95-2000 and it dispells the Myth that you can't afford to lose recruiting battles in Dade/Broward. There's Great players from all over the country, and Butch capitalized on it. Butch had his claws in Cali, Texas, New Jersey, Louisiana and so on. He didn't forget about S. Fl...but he didn't put his eggs in one basket either. He went Nation Wide.
Nationwide is the approach we should be taking.

Butch got talent. Didnt matter where they came from.

Went 7-6 last year.

Lost 3 games by 24+ points.

Now this year, they look really good.

Maybe it takes a time to get your fingerprints on a program? Just a thought. Probably wrong though. I'll hang up and listen.

It absolutely does take time. I dont think it means you have to regress. Tennessee’s losses last year were to 4 ranked teams at game time and then Pitt (11-3) and Purdue (9-4). In 2020 they went 3-7 under Pruitt. Losing to mtsu is a regression for us. I’d argue only scoring 24 against unc is a regression. Luckily there is time to change perceptions and get on track the rest of the way.

Fair. They were better in 2021 than they were in 2020. Very fair. I just wanted to point out that Heupel didn't just hit the ground running immediately. It took him a year to get things on track.

Completely agree. What worries me though is what you described is who Mario is. That’s been his identity at every stop with mediocre success to show for it. Will it change at miami? We sure as **** hope so. Or this is going to be a boring brand of football for a decade barely grinding out wins even though we are 25x more talented than the team on the other sideline.
Diaz must be laughing is butt off

Great post!

I think alot of people think we are saying mario should be fired. No one is saying that. I didnt expect miracles this season. I wanted to see improvement. Win the games you should win and look competitive against the better teams.

The mtsu loss has no excuse and we should of easily beat unc in that game. Honestly we should of beat A&M but it was at their field so i wasnt even mad about that loss.

Mario isnt going anywhere for at least 7-8 years. We all hope he turns this thing around. What alot of people are pointing out is that we haven't seen what we should be seeing with the investment in the program. Tons of people pointed out the problems with golden after his first game against maryland. He never changed after that game.

Hopefully mario will adapt.

Agreed with this take

I’ve said it a few times but what’s really important is the overall commitment to the program

So while I understand people flipping out and comparing this to Manny, Golden, Randy etc

It’s not. Even if Mario is a failure he’s going to have things those guys never had.

We can’t predict the future, however it is a different program now foundationally. Now what ultimately results from that….*** if I know

We have more professionals in that building now than just our HC so we will see what happens

Bullsh't.

This was the 16th ranked team in the preseason.
Had a QB that was getting plenty of first round hype.
And one of only 15 teams in the country that had that magical blue chip ratio > 50%.

Yeah, about that...

You don't need a Bama-caliber roster to beat average teams like UNC or Texas A&M. You need that kind of talent to win championships, not money games against Middle Tennessee State.

Coming into the season most fans expected us to lose 3-4 games a year. The way we're playing this year, we're staring 6-7 losses in the face. This is no surprise as Cristobal routinely lost to teams he shouldn't have at Oregon. He's not a good coach, and the way he views football (run-heavy, slow paced) leaves little margin for error.

Hopefully he has an epiphany and changes the way he views football. Even with a talent advantage over 90% of the teams we play, X's and O's will matter.

Weird losses happen in year 1. Sure there are a couple red flags...But wtf does posting and crying about it do?

Reel it in maniac

Sure thing. I don't think there necessarily has to be a "base" city or area. If you go down Alabama's roster, they have in-state guys, but they're not all from Birmingham and its suburbs. They go find guys in any **** ant town in Alabama. Get the best we can get out of south Florida, sure, but quit thinking that this DB from Broward is better than that DB from Lanett, Alabama because "south Florida". Go find dudes wherever they are.

Baseball does the same, and it's probably worse. We can't get out of a regional, but our staff thinks south Florida showcase heroes are just better. They are not.
Based off of their current roster it appears there base outside of Bama is........SOUTH FLORIDA. They have 9 south florida kids (i dont think i counted the 2 port st lucie/fort pierce kids which wouldve pushed it to 11) i counted currently on roster.
Behind that they have feet in the DMV area as well...and have for some time. They hit Texas for lineman.

Every school has a recruiting base which starts locally /in state then branches out. In the cycle where a certain position is down or you dont hit your targets should come from bases/recruiting grounds where you have feet in.

We should be in New Orleans, Dallas, Atlanta YEARLY....We also should recruit the tidewater area (VA)DMV and ive been saying it for 10 years now...because recruiting their only weakens one of ourbiggest rivals.

8 years?

He won 7 in his 3rd. 8 in his 4th. 7 in his 5th. 8 in his 6th.

7 wins at wake is 9 at miami. 11 wins at wake is 2001 canes for wake forest.

Clawson would skull**** miami.
I really dont think he understands we have High schools bigger than Wake in Florida. lol

They are honestly getting the talent level well of.....MTSU.

What they do to teams impress me...also one of the best players is from.......SOUTH FLORIDA. (SOUTH FLORIDA KIDS ARE EVERYWHERE BALLING)

No he definitely doesn't understand that. Wake is getting everyones leftovers. They aren't even getting Georgia tech talent.

Yeah, I don't think 9 players out of 100 constitutes a "base". Especially when they have more than 9 guys from Birmingham and I don't even consider that a base.

Ultimately we agree that we should go after the best - only the best - in south Florida while also going after the best around the country. But having 50 guys from the same area won't cut it. There isn't a recruiting ground in the country deep enough to support that.

Well, I don't understand it because it isn't true. The biggest high school in Florida has a thousand fewer students than Wake Forest. So if you guys are trying to make a point, try to do it without the hyperbole.

Yes, Wake Forest has one contributing player from south Florida, therefore south Florida is king. Got it.
