This is exactly where I'm at. You could excuse the two OOC losses to a pair of top 5 teams, but how can you justify losing the conference in the first two conference games and keeping the coach?
I'll play devils advocate just to raise everyones blood pressure.
Ok we lost to the #2 and #3. Just outclassed and outplayed, but we had a 30% healthy QB. UVA we had a RS QB in his first start. Just a bad break, we are a chip shot FG away from being in the driver's seat in the ACC coastal. UNC, road loss, were on brink of winning the game on the final possession. Then two wins over ranked teams.
We haven't lost the division yet, that's why all the teams play more than two conference games. Over a span of 10 conference games or so, the fluke wins and losses will average out and the team that was actually the best in the division will end up with the best record. UM can still win the division and the ACC. Whether you are 6-2 and then lose 2 of the next 4 to finish 8-4 or are 4-4 and win 4 straight to finish 8-4, the end result is the same. This is the point of the season where teams wilt. If UM, with all its injuries, manages to reel of 4 straight Ws, wins the conference and a NY6 game and finish ranked in the top 10, Diaz would have managed to secure the best season in almost 15 years (would definitely be a better end result than 2017). Is it likely? Not remotely. BUT if it does happen, then I for one will do a slow clap for Diaz as I certainly did not see that coming.
