Manny believes in the Defense

The most important and TRUE comment in the Manny article is this: CFB will never play rough/tough defense anymore....anywhere.

WHY?

Simple: Statistically Defenders run the HIGHEST risk of injury-- not just for CTE but various career ending joint injuries ....

Defensive players are now all going to start dialing back their aggressiveness and save themselves for a shot at the NFL with a health body and brain.

The coaches are all millionaires now on the backs of mostly poor, inner city kids-- many of who blow out knees and multimillion dollar NFL potential payouts before they even get to the draft. Every kid in CFB with potential now know they need to look out for themselves.

Neither Manny, Saban, Dabo or any millionaire coach is going to give a star player a pension fund when he blows his knee out trying to win so the coach can get a few more million$ on his next contract.

I support the players.

Coaches use YPP across the country. It’s the smart way to look at things versus total defense, which can be skewed by tempo. YPP is important but acknowledging huge holes in the defense is another. Saying you’re pleased with LB play right now is frightening.
LB's performance was scary comment

2016: 4.90 YPP allowed vs all FBS opponents (14th in the country), 5.45 YPP allowed vs Ranked Opponents (21st in the country)
2017: 4.75 YPP allowed vs all FBS opponents (8th in the country), 4.44 YPP allowed vs Ranked Opponents (3rd in the country)
2018: 4.52 YPP allowed vs all FBS opponents (3rd in the country), 4.55 YPP allowed vs Ranked Opponents (5th in the country)
2019: 4.86 YPP allowed vs all FBS opponents (14th in the country), 5.53 YPP allowed vs Ranked Opponents (17th in the country)
2020: 5.41 YPP allowed vs all FBS opponents (41st in the country), 6.35 YPP allowed vs Ranked Opponents (37th in the country) ** Only Clemson was ranked when we played them this year

So, really no validity to this padding the stats vs bad teams thing. The defense has pretty much been who it's been vs ranked or unranked opponents. Yes, there's a slight increase in YPP allowed to ranked opponents in every season except 2018. But you'd expect that...they're better teams. For example, last year Ohio State led the country in YPP allowed vs FBS teams....in 14 games vs FBS opponents, they gave up 4.14 YPP.

But if you filter for all teams games vs ranked opponents, the number that led the country was 4.74 YPP. Makes sense. Everyone pads their stats against bad teams.
Thanks for posting. Myth Debunked.

Trust me, they aren't pleased. There's a reason they kept giving Corey Flagg more playing time. They were hamstrung last week because Corey Flagg had COVID and Sam Brooks is still playing hurt.

There are 130 FBS teams and every single one has multiple coaches give interviews every week. How many of those have an occurrence where a coach blatantly calls out a player or specific group? Less than 1%?

This board is so funny with this nonsense. "Can you believe Manny said he's happy with the linebackers? This guy sucks!!"

Fellas....if you don't think what is said in coaches meetings vs what is said to Susan Miller Degnan are VASTLY different discussions, you need to get off this board and stop analyzing this football team immediately.

The whole "the numbers are padded by bad opponents" thing is the case for literally every single team in every single sport. Everyone does better against bad teams than they do against good teams. Even the best teams pad their stats against cupcakes. It's like Miami fans think every other team plays this impossible of a gauntlet schedule while Miami beats up on FCS cupcakes every week.

I’m guessing Mike Leach is in that 1% lol last year he said the his QBs sucked

Haha yes, great point. Leach is very much an exception to the rule. You get exactly what that guy is thinking, basically totally unfiltered. Almost every single other coach is MUCH different.

And look at it deeper....the guy gets blasted for that **** all the time. People don't like it. "He's an *******". So you see why "coach speak" is a real thing.

These idiots don’t get it. They think interview answers are geared towards couch potatoes whose only connection to the program is posting on a free message board and occasionally buying 4XL UM t-shirts on sale.

We're 4th in the ACC in scoring defense, too. Don't read too much in the YPP stuff. He's been using the same metric since he got here
Yea Manny has always been advance analytic guy but our numbers have to be down across the board.. YPP, Havoc rate, tfl, sacks, turnovers, etc..

This is with his players in his scheme, not a good look

I agree yds per carry important but points allowed per game more important to me

I look to use the eye metric and my eyes tell me suck on defense

The problem is our eyes don't watch every team. I'd wager 95% of the fanbases in the country think their defenses suck. 2020 football is a different game.

IMO, we are what the stats say we are. The 4th best defense in the conference (behind Clemson, ND and Pittsburgh) and a Top 35ish unit overall. We don't suck but we aren't good, and the biggest reason is poor LB recruiting.

Diaz had a defense filled with NFL players when he was was DC. Our defense is not that good or deep. We had a legit 2 deep DL. With Trent, Chad, Garvin, Demetrius, not to mention better LBs and secondary players. We need to simply make key stops with this team and they did and the final 3 drives when it was critical. That is something imo. But if you think we are gonna be great this year, not happening. If our offense plays like they did the last game and for parts of UVA, we finish 3-1 at worse.

This also makes sense when we consider the years that we had an elite defense even going just by the eye test or what you read on the boards. 2017 was championship level (or **** close), 2018 also insanely good. 2019 we took a step back, and this year the LB position and to some extent Dline play have relegated us to a slightly above average D

Question is, do you believe it's recruiting or Baker's playcalling? LB recruiting has been weak enough where you can justifiably blame either

I'd be curious to see our YPP against ranked opponents. Without looking at any data I'm inclined to say we pad our YPP and overall defensive stats vs bad ACC teams. We are usually exposed against competent offenses and QB's.
Most teams pad their stats against unranked opponents. Not saying we don't have issues on defense, we do just pointing out the obvious.

Don’t care how he values certain metrics but being forced to say you were pleased with the play of the worst LBs in 30 years at UM is just sad

If he is pleased with the LB play, it would be a fireable offense. Obviously he realizes that the LB play is subpar, but he's not going to rip his players in the media. Watch what he does and not what he says.
