LSU Looking to hire Blake Baker *Update* BAKER TO LSU

I’m sure it’s been brought up already but the whole situation worked out perfectly. As a first time boss, you’d never want to develop the reputation of being “the guy who fires everyone after one bad season”. It’s easy for fans to want to can underperforming coaches but for actual coaches, this is their profession. They often have to pack up their families and move across the country. It could be hard to attract assistants if you have the rep for firing people really fast. Especially since Manny retained nobody from Richt’s offensive staff and then immediately fired almost every offensive hire he made after the first season. Everyone wants a boss who has loyalty to their employees, not someone who’s constantly scapegoating underlings. There are veteran coaches who have been around and proved themselves among the best in the business and they can be more cut throat because they’ve already made their reputation. For a new coach, you don’t get that kind of benefit of the doubt.

Interesting - Andy Staples of The Athletic wrote a piece on Baker going to LSU last night. He says Baker is joining the staff there as "CO-DC/LB Coach. Maybe they did settle on that to justify the salary... They supposedly wanted him as an experienced playcaller for their new DC who has NO play calling experience

Great move by LSU, as Blake only called plays for about half of any game. And certainly not in the first quarter.

Honestly an extremely good take. I never thought of it like that cuz I let my feelings get in the way. First instinct is always "FIRE ______"

Trust me, I wanted them out immediately. But we forget that our college football team doesn’t operate in a vacuum and some decisions can negatively effect future moves.

Question: Was Baker fired, or did he take another role in a different organization?

He was staying at Miami in a reduced role right?

Have there been credible reports Manuela told him to pack his ****?

Baker seeing long term writing on wall and departing is different than "we placed your personal effects in a box waiting for you at the curb..."

In some ways, SEC douches would spin the headlines that a Miami (ACC) DC left for a position coaching role at LSU akin to G5 coach moving up to D1P5.

Regardless, the man has moved on and our Canes have an opportunity of at least addition by subtraction, if not adding another leader to get our Canes on track.

This is one **** of a spin job.

Look, while it's true that we don't need dopey after-the-fact spin jobs, we can also acknowledge that a high-batting-average poster like Cribby was hinting that more moves were on the horizon, and to be patient.

So, yeah, maybe Manny had a plan to let D-coaches leave gently on their own all along...

Shout out to the ****ies that helped get me through this difficult time.

To be clear, Baker's departure whatever the circumstances is a Miami+.

With that said, this "Manuela playing 3D chess with an unseen hand" silliness is just that--silly.

Manuela missed a very important tone setting moment (similar to the O staff massacre after he returned as HC) by NOT releasing Baker immediately after the final whistle.

Unless of course he was trying to be humane by taking care of his guy--and by all acounts (keeping him on staff) would indicate that.

Manuela is lurching our Canes forwards-sideways.

Don’t ignore the financial implications of a buyout.

Saban gives up points. We are suppose to think manny is going to shut people out? Lol

Exactly... its an offensive driven game now.

Alabama lowest amount of points scored was 31 vs Notre Dame... they scored 38 vs Mizzou in their first game of the season....

Every other game 40 plus...

Durante Jones is 1000x more qualified than Blake

This isn’t a video game. Immediately firing your protégé and affecting his career prospects isn’t the great tone setting moment that people think. Like @DTP sais, these things have real implications. Publicly announcing that you’ll be calling plays after a search where he was clearly looking for another option is a strong signal to BB. Who wants to stick around in the lame duck year after the Hc attempts to replace them and neuters them publicly? Doing your guy a solid, allowing him to land on his feet in a respectable spot AND saving on his salary is a strong move.

Excellent point. Although the contract might read "... you get the delta between your new job and what you were makimg here fkr x year(s)..."

near term win for our Canes... can they now make it a long term victory?
