That’s definitely part of it. He comes with a lot of risk. Most of the risk is due to his behavior.
He also has trouble getting along with people he works with, has had numerous well publicized feuds, etc. Mouth breathers will say “give me that savage”, but honestly Lane has spent a good part of his career acting like a frat boy.
He was a frat boy until he got humbled, and Saban taught him to be a real coach. Since his time with Bama, what scandalous things has he done? Dude has been a model coach at FAU and Ole Miss. He got a ringing endorsement from Schnelly as the FAU coach and several big time P5s are trying to land him. Despite that, UM is tops on his list because Kiffin isn't dumb. He knows at LSU he'd have to keep trying to get through UGA and Bama every year. The ACC would be a cakewalk (and he just happened to beat our biggest opponent on next years schedule despite being at a huge talent disadvantage).
There is a cost benefit analysis - is Mario so much better that he's worth an extra 2 million per year over Kiffin (Mario would probably be asking for 8.5 mil, Kiffin may do it for 6.5). I dont think h
Mario is worth an extra 2 mil, especially given that every one acknowledges that he has to hit home runs with both his OC and DC (which means $$$). Kiffin just needs a good DC.
