Justin Fuente fired at Va Tech

I am absolutely not the dude to be judging "up and comer" coaches but Fuente was an all-time whiff by some CIS "experts". Not as bad as the Norvell advocates but still pretty bad.
Guilty as charged. I wasn’t on the board at the time but I admittedly thought both he and Herman were gonna kill it at their respective jobs.

Just because Manny hasn't been fired yet doesn't mean contact with potential replacements hasn't happened. Any good candidate would currently be coaching anyway, so we wouldn't officially hire them until the season is over.
This is true actually, I just hope they do the right thing in the right way this time.

The fans haven’t been happy with Fuente for some time. And it’s not just about the results on the field. They think he’s an arrogant prick and that doesn’t sit well in that town.

It's hard to evaluate G5 coaches - most successful ones are winning with someone else's guys that they didn't recruit. Recruiting at the G5 level is totally different than recruiting in the P5 level and he was essentially tasked with recruiting the same level of players that he did at Memphis and being expected to develop them better and win with them at a higher level in the ACC.

That's why it's smart to avoid G5 coaches at a place like Miami. Unless that person has been there 5+ years, got their own guys, proved they can sustain winning, and then on top of that they've got to agree to bring in new staff that more appropriate for a higher level. Tough decision for some guys that they're not willing to do.

What give you any sliver of opinion that he's going to be retained? You're fast rising up the ranks as one of the worst porsters on the site. Congrats!
Oh, sorry if I didn’t explain that well: I think Manny is toasted.

I was talking about the modus operandi for the hire of a new HC.

Worst porster? Maybe, but not because of that.

They were incensed that he was let go : argument is he did much good while he was AD, including athlete academics, fundraising, leadership roles within ACC committees, including chairmanship of a couple, They also went off a bit on the fan base about the perception that changes like this will "bring back" the good old days..... It was mainly Wes Durham - he seemed really angry. Packer was more understanding that football drives these kind of decisions
All of those things are fine and well, but other than academics, if they don’t come with wins in any of the three biggest sports then you can wipe your *** with them. Especially the ACC committees. What has that gotten us besides screwed by every officiating crew? You have to wonder if these guys watch sports, literally any of them. The national media has really gone out of their way to kiss this guys *** on his way out.

Do some of you realize that you can’t hire a new coach until after the season is over regardless of how early you fire your previous coach? There’s not some line with a ticket machine like the deli where it’s first come first serve.

Also, Miami just fired their athletic director. You probably need to hire a new one before anyone can fire/hire a coach.

It’s very likely Miami will employ Manny Diaz through the remainder of the season. Probably because it will save them $2 million. If that extra $2 million can go towards our new coach’s salary it would be well worth it. There’s literally nothing to gain by firing your coach now unless your team is in such shambles that players are quitting and you risk losing a chunk of your roster.
Agreed with most of that however, you can most definitely fire your HC without the new AD in place. Jenn is interim so it would just be her firing Manny at the behest of the board.

My guess is they like him personally so are letting that influence their opinion.

No one can make any reasonable case that Blake was anything other than a terrible AD. We are terrible in virtually every sport at this point. It’s outrageous. ****, our womens soccer team scored 4 goals the entire season last year.

Blake absolutely had to go whether some people liked him and thought he was nice to interview or not.
Exactly, it isn't just football. The baseball team lived at Omaha when I grew up in the 80's.

Men's Basketball has declined also. We don't need an oil change. We need a brand new motor.

Great. Mandy will get outcoached by an interim. Just pull the plug now.

It always worries me that another dangerous ACC program besides Clemson is going to get their ish together before we do.

Hopefully VT stays away from Herman and Freeze because they would be a problem with either.

Chadwell and Napier would also do some damage there.

People overrate what VT can be. They have been doing it for almost two decades. The ONLY time VT is nationally relevant is when Miami is a garbage dump. I'm not joking, look at their history. A competent Miami consistently beats VT, that's been true for the better part of 3 decades. Beamer was a unique hire, he gave them an identity that maxes out what they can be, but they are the kind of program that needs outside help to get anywhere. A program like Clemson or FSU can win, no matter who is up or down, provided they make a quality hire. FSU can win independently of what Miami does, same with Clemson.

You also have a problem with VT in that the Beamer faction is still firmly in charge. Fuente couldn't build the culture he wanted and learned the hard way: NEVER BE THE MAN THAT FOLLOWS THE MAN. They have a legit AD in Babcock, so I wouldn't be shocked if they made another solid hire. Sometimes, hires that make all the sense in the world don't work out, but if you keep making solid hires you'll hit on at least one, unless you are at a place that refuses to provide the support needed to succeed.

Fuente took a team that had gone 2-10 before he got there into a 10 win team by year 3. There was plenty of indication that he was an up-and-comer.

Norvell just maintained that success.

So yes, it's a crap shoot.
No AD shoots 100% or even close to it. That said, you keep making quality hires, you'll hit on one. Miami hasn't made quality hires, the ONLY two hires you could even pitch as being rational were Richt and Golden. Diaz, Shannon and Coker were all low success probability hires.
