WTF are these guys "mentoring" them with?
Life generally. You'd have to have spent some time in the inner city to understand. When I mentored I did it with a group and to no surprise, most of the troubled youth in the programs played sports. Their parents basically used sports as a daycare while they worked mutliple jobs, sold drugs, or whatever. Most of those dudes have no or one parent in their lives and end up looking up to the mentors in the programs as their parents basically. We had a kid who ended up living with the counselor.
I'm sure its a similar situation in Miami for some kids, obviously not all. These poor cats are spending their youth around other people who are not their parents. Some of them are playing football since age 6 or 7 and these coaches, uncles, etc. become their mentors. So it carries on until they're older too.
Look at Luke and some of the players he's known since Optimist who all look to him and his opinions.
So...
1. Don't do drugs.
2. Don't hang with the wrong crowd.
3. Stay out of jail.
4. Do well in school.
Then why the **** are these guys involved in the recruiting process?
well it's more than that if it's a real mentor and not a ***ing handler. Mentor is actual trying to help you under the importance of recruiting/college as a life decision beyond football.
Take for example how cupid's handlers handled his recruitment. What was the biggest thing they had an issue about. "Scheme" and how it affects his on field development. You know because ignore the dozens of highly rated DT's LSU has brought in over the last decade and knowing that only a handful of them actually made it to the league. That's not something cupid has to fear because he's guaranteed not to be the next Chris Davenport of any of the other countless highly rated DT's LSU has had over the years. Atleast that's what his handler think.
So that's why you take a kid who ended up at their HS because he was already ***ing up in school so bad he almost missed his chance to even make it to college. A kid that needed to be somewhere that gave him a real structured/"dedicated" lesson plan and support system. You send him hundreds of miles away from his real support system (sorry some kats you just met a few weeks ago aren't you real support system) to a large public university that really can give two ****s about what you do in the classroom as long as you make the mins required to stay eligible. A school that isn't going to help you later in life if those NFL dreams don't come true. But hey their scheme is more DT friendly (until it isn't).
Mentor is the guy who sells a kid who
needs real structure in his life about the things off the field that he needs to be concerned about(sorry if you already have to get shipped off to family in HS because your messing up in school it's safe to assume you aren't mature and self dedicated enough to be off on your own). Mentors let the friends and family and hangerons talk up NFL dreams because that what it is a **** dream and only a select few get to achieve it, they are focusing on real mfer life and what best for you in life. Worse part is when the dudes without a plan outside of football don't make the league they end up right back at they **** momma house and the "handler" is nowhere to be found.
