Why do you think we missed on the Pancake evaluation so badly?
People need to understand that Pancake was not on the same track as Francis coming out of high school, and it was a wide gap. Pancake was definitely a little raw coming out of high school and needed time to develop, which isn't a bad thing. The staff clearly thinks Pancake can be an impactful player for this team, which is why he hasn't entered the portal yet. He's on track to start in 2026, and has plenty of eligibility left

I agree with you in general, however we have quite possibly the top OL evaluators in the country and they thought he was a future 1st overall pick. The gap between what they thought and what he is, is significant
Samson was a tough eval because his comp level was so bad up here in MA. You saw the fluidity in the player and the movement skills and took him based on the traits, but he was always going to be someone who needed to develop before contributing. If we are still having this convo next year or if he transfers, then we can say it was a miss. OL and DT are two spots where I will usually give more time before labeling them a bust because of the physical demands of the positions.

Still early on Samson to call him a bust. Sometimes OL takes time to develop, but given what I can only assume is one of the highest NILs on the teams… I’d imagine the ROI is putrid there.
I agree. However, the staff hasn't moved on and they have shown the willingness to do so with other highly ranked recruits. They must still like his potential, maybe they think now is the time it it will click.

Both of his parents are slums of Mizzou...Not 1 but both.....that needs to be taken seriously
He’s been to campus. On his own dime multiple times. If distance was an issue, or the city, or whatever preconceived notion of moving to a murderous city we wouldn’t be this far into the game.

Plus it’s be said ad nauseam, Coral Cables isn’t the same as what rural white people think Miami is. If he hadn’t been to campus I’d be more inclined to believe that. But that’s not the case.

My understanding was that Pancake was advanced coming out of HS. The issue was that there were some concerns about adjusting to the strength of P4 ball. Well those concerns appeared to be well founded. I recall that the staff had Pancake at the top of their board, and ahead of FM.

I swear I’m not being an apologist, ya’ll know me. I understand the 5* label is muddying things with him but if he starts in 2026, and goes on to be a top 50 pick, is he a bust? Especially considering he sat behind 3 NFL guys in Francis, a projected R1 guy, Rivers and Bell (not saying he is an R1 guy, but I’ve said my thoughts here).
Gotta factor in too, Francis came from a HS football factory in IMG. Okunlola played in MA. Odds are his path was gonna take longer than Francis. Not saying you specifically aren’t saying that, just speaking out loud.

I dont think he was ahead of FM. If he was it was 1a and 1b type of thing. Francis came from a high school powerhouse that has coaches and facilities better than a lot of D1 colleges. My concern with a lot of IMG kids is I feel they are already reaching their potential and they play with a team of other 5*. I forget what year it was but some tweet was if one school signed every college eligible player from IMG, it would be good for like the 11th ranked recruiting class. Think of that for a second, one high school could be a top 15 recruiting class.

I dont recall anything about him being advanced aside from his physical traits. The due legit looked like he was built in a lab and would always post training videos in shorts. He "looked" more polished than FM standing in shorts but as soon as you turned on the tape there was really no comparison. And as others said he needed to get stronger and understand blocking assignments, two things FM already was advanced in.

Where does this urban legend of top evaluators even come from?

In 2023 we got Mauigoa which isn’t an eval. Pancake probably isn’t either

The “evals” were:

Tripp - gone
Tinilau - gone
Kinsler - ?

Or is this just from Anez Cooper in 2022?
IMO, several kids while at Oregon (too lazy, don't care to look up who)

Cooper, McCoy, Rodriguez, Bell come to mind immediately.

Minaya got some buzz early in spring.

I remember many thinking Rodriguez had no business in being a Cane.

Not a list of shining examples, but a list regardless.

McCoy, Rodriguez, and Bell don’t belong on a list with Cooper

Cooper was immediate how good he was

If I hear the hype about McCoy one more time without any substance behind it I’m gonna vomit

Bell was the top rated JUCO OL in the country

I think they’re good coaches and **** good recruiters but these urban legends about them are just wild to me. It’s like if we keep repeating it the truth doesn’t really matter

Maybe people on the board viewed it as 1a and 1b because they were both 5 stars, but the staff definitely didn't view it that way

Well the videos of Samson showed a guy who had refined footwork for a kid just in HS. Many times OL coming out of HS just physically dominate the comp. I agree with you about the comment that IMG kids come with the maxed out label. Francis to me was a sure thing but the question was whether it would work out at Tackle. He wasn’t exactly a prototypical build of a tackle. There was some questions about him handling speed rushers at the P4 level. Now the worst case scenario with him was that he could slide inside to G and he would be dominant there. Well he shut all that down and started off rip and never looked back.

Ultimately the staff had Samson, above everyone on their board, those are Dmoney’s words not mine and there was a reason they wanted him at LT.

I think he was a bit of damaged goods when he arrived. Watched him his first spring and always noticed a limp of sorts. Then he gets hurt during the season. Last year he had a chance to take a job when Rivers went down and the USF game showed where he was. He just wasn't further ahead mentally than Bell who struggled with the physical aspect of the game.

I'll say this, in the limited reps from spring this year i thought he looked really quick. Is he finally full strength and got the mental part of this down? We may find out. He is the first tackle in the game if someone goes down (provided Mccoy doesnt bump outside). My comp has always been Terron Armstead as they seem to have similar frames. Hope he lives up to the hype if needed this year.

Fair points, and I agree with you.

I just think that they are in a no-win situation. They need to recruit well, which they are doing, but with the transfer portal I think it is harder to get noticeable results.

If memory serves me correctly Cooper starting as a freshman was before the modern transfer portal was available to utilize.

The board would have gone insane if we chose to start Cooper as a 3 star freshman versus addressing that position in the portal during that off-season.

Yeah I’m not trying to be a **** here I just am confused at this unimpeachable stance some have about our coaches

Our OL is a strength of the team now and that helps me sleep at night bless Mario and Mirabal for that

But yeah I remember Cooper as a freshman surrounded by bums and he was mauling people. I’m actually a little disappointed he’s still here honestly but let’s not even get into the “development” parts to that

There’s stuff in the background with Mizzou that doesn’t necessarily work in Mizzou’s favor. Just because you went to a school doesn’t mean you have the greatest relationship with that school.
