It's Official: California to let college athletes make money, defying NCAA

The fans of college football (i.e., the people who are the source of all the money the system makes) don't care about the athletes. They care about their favorite school. Yes, the players have some economic value in the system, but the overwhelming majority of the economic value comes from the school logos. That's why you could take the top 500 high school football players every year and put them in an actual minor league, and that minor league wouldn't make a dime, while CFB would still be raking in the dough.
This is not a controversial statement.

This is the beginning of the end for Alabama, and all of the hick-*** schools that are currently on top.

They won't be able to compete.

Schools in big city markets are going to clean up

Well, Miami better " clean up " then. Otherwise it will be the " beginning of the end " for Miami. Nevertheless, most of y'all do know the corrupt NCAA will take this to Federal court.

They'll complain that they are not getting the endorsement's that the men are getting etc.

Lol you must have a lot of time on your hands to invent arguments that don't exist. Women have plenty of unique advertising opportunities unless you think a Male player will steal their tampon commercials.

@Canesince02 what specifically about this post do you disagree with?
You can’t have a bunch of terrible athletes running around and expect people to be entertained. Personally I would not pay a dime to see a bunch of Robert Knowles’ play. I wouldn’t even turn on the TV

So, Cali residents playing in Cali can get paid. What if you're a non-California resident playing for a university located in Cali? Or, if you're a California resident playing out of state (e.g., like Brad Kaaya)? I assume it's only the former of the latter two situations, meaning a Kaaya wouldn't have been eligible to receive money. If I'm understanding right, this should be a big boon for California university sports programs.

I don't agree with this.In fact I think it does just the opposite. It lets schools like Bama and Uga among others not have to hide paying players as they sort of have to now.

what's to stop a booster from say buying a hundred or even a thousand jerseys or having a kid make a commercial for a car dealership where he gets a new car.

the schools like Bama that have the bigtime money are going to find ways to circumvent the system so it works in their favor no matter what the rule is.

This law just allows them to do it above board now..jmho

Thanks for engaging in some dialogue.

IMO, it's all relative. The level of play would decline across the board so it would be hardly noticeable. Besides, people are rabid about their schools, and that alone would continue to drive the massive revenues. Maybe revenues would drop a small amount, but the point still stands. CFB would still be raking in large profits and those kids who went to the minor league would get nothing because it's an undeniable fact that nobody would watch that ****.

Am I mistaken that the rule is always you have to have 1:1 male to female sports?
Yes and most women's sports are the non-revenue. Women's tennis and soccer at Miami make no money. Women's basketball does though. Title IX just pretty much garuntees that you can't cut a good portion of the non revenue sports. I know I will get called sexist or something for it, but its just the truth.

Agreed there are plenty of women endorsement deals. Women can also endorse the same products men can, Propel water, and Gatorade, Nike, Adidas, Fruit of the Loom, and whoever. This isn't a male only thing.

I disagree. If the top 500 football and the top 100 basketball went to minor leagues. The revenues would take a much bigger hit than you think. If the best athletes competed in a minor league and they were BROADCASTED AND MARKETED people would watch that just like they did the majors. If you had a sport with a bunch of Robert Knowles’ and the team that won just had better Robert Knowles’ where is the enjoyment in that?

Well................. The entire state of Alabama IS racist. The gentleman is simply stating a fact.

Generalizing an entire population is literally worse than actually being a racist. Just listen to yourselves.
It's crazy how everyone is turning this into hurr durr Bama won't be able to compete now. Hurr dur Bama is racist and the poorest state. No mentions of LSU, Georgia, etc.

As far as the actual topic of this thread: It's like nobody on here had their mom explain to them what "Be careful what you wish for" meant when they were kids...smh
