How Does Paul Johnson....

Paul Johnson is a BUM. No excuses.

Cant recruit worth a sh*t and has that as a built in excuse. are you serious? if I was a gt alum/ booster I would be calling for his head or for him to fix up that offense with a co -oc or something. Their defense as well have routinely been sh*tty. And this is with the school being in ATLANTA of all places.

The crazy part is we have owned him..but are sh*t hasn't been together which has allowed gt to back their way into the coastal a few times and ultimately led to that bum keeping his job.

Well said on all fronts

Since Paul Johnson took over GT in 2008:

GT ACC record: 39-27, 1-1 in ACCCG, 2-5 in Bowl Games
Miami (FL) ACC record: 35-29, no ACCCG appearances, 0-6 in Bowl Games

So he's been slightly better than the 2 dregs we fired? Great for him.

There is something I find very Al Golden of him. He hasn't tried to modernize the passing part of his offense at all.

Truth is, outside of 1990 when they split the title, Georgia Tech has been a very average program. They haven't had any sustained, top level success in almost 30 years. Why would anybody think they should be better than 8 wins a year? Maybe if Miami ever gets their act together and Virginia Tech and Pitt's new coaches can get them back into the upper crust, you'll see Georgia Tech make a coaching change. Until then, they'll be happy with 8 wins a year and an occasional trip to the ACCCG.

get players to sign up for his offense? If you're a GT player on the sideline watching....how could you even stomach observing this joke of a system? It doesn't prepare you for the NFL....it is unbelievably boring. Even on defense, if you have NFL aspirations, why would you want to defend a triple option which you will almost never see in the pros (if you make it)? I just don't get it. I would rather play at a DII school than in a system like that. GT fans must be some miserable ****s.

wait wait wait. you havent seen his new trick the fumblerooski....

They have won the Coastal in the last 5 years.....we havent

Not true...

Detroit Lions: Al Golden

Biography:

Al Golden joins the Lions after 23 years as a college coach, including the last 10 seasons as the head coach at the University of Miami (2011-15) and Temple University (2006-10). Golden brings two Coach of the Year honors over the last six years, including 2009 MAC Coach of the Year (Temple) and the 2013 Lombardi Award for Excellence in Coaching (Miami). In addition to his experience as a 10-year head coach at both Temple and Miami, Golden has previously worked as defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator and has coached five different positions; corners, safeties, inside linebackers, outside linebackers and tight ends in the college ranks.

While guiding the Miami football program, Golden led his teams to bowl eligibility in his first four seasons, and the 2015 Hurricanes squad would also qualify for a bowl game following the regular season. In 2012, despite NCAA allegations following a program investigation that occurred prior to his hiring, Golden led the Hurricanes to their first Coastal Division Championship in just his second season. Prior to Miami’s bowl game in 2013, Golden received the 2013 Lombardi Award for Excellence in Coaching at the 44th Rotary Lombardi Award Ceremony.

Lot of ACC coaches owe our previous staff a debt of gratitude.

Not necessarily true. They were a top 25 team that averaged 9-10 win seasons in the late 90s when George O'Leary was there and Ralph Friedgen was the OC. Joe Hamilton was the Heisman runner-up while I was at school there. Ran a shotgun style no-huddle offense (not much different than what CMR ran at FSU with Charlie Ward) with great results.

Chan Gailey was the definition of mediocre with good talent that he recruited. Paul Johnson would have been fired already if it wasn't for Justin Thomas' first season where they won the coastal and crushed Miss State in the Orange Bowl. That bought him enough goodwill to make it through last year's 3-9 debacle, which was mainly caused by O-line and B-back injuries before the season started.

Tech fans are disappointed Paul Johnson is still there, because they know the system will never lead to true and sustainable success. They also know that Johnson is stubborn as a mule (more than even D'onofrio) and they won't be able to keep up with other teams. That is why most games that have a packed house are filled with fans of the teams they play.

Indifference has taken over the Tech fan base....but Tech will still be better than last year. I predict a 7-8 win season for them. If it's worse, then patience for Paul Johnson will be close to the end.

Let's go back to 1983, the year Tech joined the ACC. That's pretty average.

**** didnt paul johnson only beat golden once here?

It is what it is. You don't make the move to hire Paul Johnson because you're hoping to lure top area talent to your NFL training ground. You hire Paul Johnson because he's good at making the most of a low talent situation. Which, with GT's academic standards, makes it tough to just take anyone who can play. The administration is happy with what he's provided them. Generally winning seasons, bowl games and a couple ACC Coastal Championships. Pretty sure they won the ACC outright once under him too. They might have had a few more NFL players under Chan Gailey and drunk O'Leary but they've had more success on the field under Johnson. Not every athletic program's #1 priority is to compete for national championships. It's probably why their fanbase has trouble luring fans who are not alumni.

While you may be right about their priorities, the academic standards cop-out doesn't hold water when you factor in other schools with equally high *supposed standards located in much much much less fertile recruiting grounds having much more consistent success.

So about once a decade they spit out a 10+ win season. Seems to keep the fan base satisfied .

the most mindboggling thing is the GT administration firing Gailey to bring in a triple O guy. You go from Calvin Johnson/Damaryius Thomas to not having any WRs at all.

lol.

gt is realistic about their situation. they are a serious, uncompromising academic school with a lot more guys than girls, which is pretty much the opposite of what most good recruits want. they're not going to change that any time soon, so their admin decided to do what the service academies do and roll with an offense that suits the kind of recruit they can get (johnson is a massive *******, but he's the best in the business at the triple option). they've accepted that they'll never win a national title, but they really only aspire to beat georgia, and win the division on occasion.

They won a title in the name nineties

i meant never win another. that was a split title and an anomaly because it was a down year for the rest of college football.
