Hetherman had his roughest day at Miami

Secondary is beat to ****, but this entire season we're seeing how big of a loss Bain and Mesidor were. Some thought we wouldn't see this big of a drop-off, but we most certainly are.

I don't know if people will like this, but at least with all of the injuries, we're a pretty average defense. At best we're better than average.

All DC will have their games where they get had, but he has some blind spots emerging which are concerning. Neither the Nole OL nor Daniel can handle middle blitzes, we tried virtually none. We stuck with the edge pressure which they showed they could handle and were prepared to counter. That should have been our clue to test them in ways we know they’ve failed. If they sured that up, good on them, but I doubt it.

That's an area where the coaches concern me. There will be a clear mismatch somewhere and instead of taking advantage of it we just run what we always run even if its not working...blitzing from a mile away for example.

BYU couldn't get to Carr with four so they started sending their LB, a portal target btw, who was able to rattle him almost every time. We have a LB who excels at that but we'd rather drop him 20+ yards into a zone, which he doesn't do well.

I feel like he’s throwing anything hoping it sticks rn. Our run defense is good. I don’t think our pass rush was necessarily bad, just ran into the type of QB that I think our pass rush style is not the best style against.

I watched him while at MN, so I don’t think he’s going to struggle all the time. Injuries, ejections, and probably just not good enough players are hurting the scheme. Too many guys are being forced out of position imo.

Having an elite d line hides a lot . I think the defense will improve and as long as we outscore them by one that is all that matters. 1-0

We shut down the run game but fsu dropping back and killing us thru the air just shows norvell saw something. Plus we should have put ethan on duce

Feels like OCs have a bead on him this year. Needs to break tendency a little bit.

We're currently 71st in 3rd Down Conversion Percentage Defense (38.9%), and it feels like a lot of those are 3rd and long.

The last two games, we've given up:

3rd & 16
3rd & 11
3rd & 18 (bogus facemask)
3rd & 8 (bizarre Tampa 2 call)

to bad QBs.

And we got bailed out on the 4th & 21 play (penalty was legit, coverage on the back end was not)

We have injuries and the Poyser ejection hurt, but we gotta clean up some of this stuff. I hated the DB blitz on the 75-yard to Duce. Just play coverage. Make FSU drive efficiently drive down the field.

Screen passes just kept getting chunks over and over and over.

Also, I might be in the minority, but I'm not crazy about these "NASCAR" packages with 4 DEs out there. I'd rather have Wilson and Lightfoot rushing the edges than the interior. Have at least one DT in there to bullrush so the QB has a harder time climbing the pocket.

And can we try Ewald at nickel a little bit? He seemed to have good closing speed in the reps that I saw. Thornton in coverage...

Overall, I'm pleased with the defense considering all the injuries, but stuff to clean up.

Thankfully it came after a win.
I don't get why people think these coverage struggles are to be expected because Bain and Mesidor are gone. Maybe we need re-examine the version of this defense that Indiana is running because they apparently can play pass D without generational 1st round picks at both Edge spots.

One difference last year was IU tried to keep their LBs out of coverage more
