Hetherman had his roughest day at Miami

Feels like OCs have a bead on him this year. Needs to break tendency a little bit.

We're currently 71st in 3rd Down Conversion Percentage Defense (38.9%), and it feels like a lot of those are 3rd and long.

The last two games, we've given up:

3rd & 16
3rd & 11
3rd & 18 (bogus facemask)
3rd & 8 (bizarre Tampa 2 call)

to bad QBs.

And we got bailed out on the 4th & 21 play (penalty was legit, coverage on the back end was not)

We have injuries and the Poyser ejection hurt, but we gotta clean up some of this stuff. I hated the DB blitz on the 75-yard to Duce. Just play coverage. Make FSU drive efficiently drive down the field.

Screen passes just kept getting chunks over and over and over.

Also, I might be in the minority, but I'm not crazy about these "NASCAR" packages with 4 DEs out there. I'd rather have Wilson and Lightfoot rushing the edges than the interior. Have at least one DT in there to bullrush so the QB has a harder time climbing the pocket.

And can we try Ewald at nickel a little bit? He seemed to have good closing speed in the reps that I saw. Thornton in coverage...

Overall, I'm pleased with the defense considering all the injuries, but stuff to clean up.

Thankfully it came after a win.
Your key point other OC’s have our DC dialed in.

I just went to add that all year I’ve heard about this conservative defense that allows people to dink n dunk n us playing off the LOS.

Well we got beat a few times with our defenders up on the LOS tonight.

As far as game plan felt like where was our QB spy?

Not a fan of the deep Dunnigan safety blitz. Last night he couldn't get there in time so it was 10 against 11 way too much.
Yup everytime they saw it they just went right to the area of the blitz and would hit

Doesn’t help having Thornton at that point in space who is absolutely lost

Would have loved for this to be the game he sat in more zone and let Daniel’s **** down his own leg

Agree on all points. Third down D has been weak.

People are blaming Heatherman but to me the issues were squarely on Toure and Thornton. Toure was ******* awful and Thornton has been awful in space and secondary all year. Thornton playing makes sense with the Poyser and injuries to the secondary but Toure? Idk man, he's good in the run game but he was getting burnt all day yesterday

He had a bad night. We gave up way too many explosive plays, especially explosive TDs (4). We did a great job playing defense in the red zone again, but let FSU score way too often from outside of it.

I thought we should have given more snaps to Bonner and Pruitt after Kromah went out.

We missed Poyser bad, and Fitz was only able to play half the snaps. I think we will look a lot different going forward with Poyser playing all the snaps, and Fitz hopefully playing nearly all his snaps at safety and nickel, which will allow us to limit Thornton, Day, and Dunnigan snaps (which I think will make Dunnigan more effective).

I’ve never seen a defense that leaves the middle of the field open so much. Not sure of the reason but every play there no one in the middle of the field 5-10 yds behind the LOS…and quit running blitzes with DB’s from 20 yds back. They never get there and it leaves you a man short in a defensive backfield that’s already banged up and struggling.

I mean the secondary is extremely banged up, it is what it is. But I’m annoyed with the fact we can’t get enough pressure with just our front four. I mean **** we have 4 guys who are fighting to be a top 50 pick in Scott, Moten, Lightfoot, and Wilson. Maybe we need to run more stunts like Indiana. We could eat going straight up last year, but now we need to get more creative up front to get pressure without sending a corner or safety blitz.
That’s exactly what they did on the first Hail Mary. Lightfoot came around on a stunt and almost got there. Probably would have if his jersey doesn’t get grabbed.

Yea that Tampa 2 call with Mo Toure was a headscratcher.

If youre gonna do that, gotta be Pruitt or something. Not Mo.
Plus from where Mo Toure was lined up.it was impossible for that to work.
Zero chance.
He was line up on the line of scrimmage on the opposite side of the formation....who do they think Toure is ??? I dont think there are very many DBs period that could make that work from where Toure was lined up.
Head scratching call by Heatherman

DL isn't what it was last season and the secondary is not good. LBs can't cover for ****. Injuries are apart of that of course but we made a horrible personnel decision replacing Scott with Thornton. Thornton shouldn't be playing here. His *** belongs as Boston College and we should've went after a legit nickel corner. We're wasting Fitz at nickel because we don't have anyone to play there. We play way too much soft zone and guys are just running free.

As far as this game, Norvell sucks as a HC and as a recruiter but that dude can scheme up an offense. I'm sure once he's fired, if he doesn't take a G6 job, he'll be an OC for a G4 school. Honestly, I'd take him over Dawson as an OC. At least he knows how to run screens and gets somewhat creative with the run game.

I think all the screens really slowed the pass rush. They were killing us with it. When FSU was getting pressure I was calling for a RB or TE screen. I don't know why we don't ever run them.
But they were never there to stop the screens, two popped for TDs.. So rush was stopped and no where to be found on screens, no mans land lol

Yeah, Heatherman definitely had a tough night but the best of them do and he is a good one. If we can get OJ back and everyone else remain healthy back there, this secondary is going to become much better in my opinion.

I have to believe he was going safety blitz because our CB depth is ****. No need to risk 24/6/nickel on QB blitz when we have more safeties.
