Here's what I know

LMAO at Mario running from the offensive issues that he himself created

I think he's a better coach than Mandy but I don't have any faith in him to get us over the hump or recruit South Florida well enough. He can't even run the table in the sorry *** PAC-12.
So Lane would recruit sfla better? Doubt that big time

I keep asking myself this every week and concerns me that Mario hasn’t done it. Brown has been just soooo bad. How do you not see what else you have?

Been reading Oregon boards, seems some of their informed posters have been hinting at that Thompson is not mature enough to given the starting job yet. Reading between the lines it seems he has some Jarren Williams qualities.

If thats the case then I can see why someone like Mario would not want him to start.

FWIW, Butch had a similar problem outside of Dorsey.

His QBs were Kenny Kelly, Ethenic Sands, Derrick Crudup and TJ Prunty.

Those of us who were on the boards for Butch remember that the same (valid) criticisms of Mario were there with Butch.
Saban had that problem early to but stacked enough where he doesn't have to recruit it anymore

I think people, and I'm not directly accusing you of this, are trying to convince themselves that Mario is the next Butch.

There are similarities, both seemingly make mistakes on gameday, but can typically recruit well enough to hide some of those gameday flaws. Both seem good at evaluations.

But I think some people are convincing themselves that Mario will build another 2001 Canes type squad and I don't think in today's college football he can build a team like that that will carry himself to a title.

I think you absolutely have to pair him with an OC that is a QB whisperer or he'll never be a true consistent playoff contender here.

That's just my opinion and I can very easily be wrong.

Can't Mario just be the next Mario? A guy who wins conference championships, major bowls, pulls in top 3-8 recruiting classes, and then we can go from there?

To all the anti Mario people but pro Lane please explain how one can have those strong opinions. I’m not even an anti Lane guy but that dudes resume is the definition of meh. He’s had as many bad moments as good. He’s a great play caller but somebody known not to love recruiting, rubs people the wrong way and thinks he’s smarter than he really is. Does that sound familiar ? That guy just got fired at UF, only difference one is risky as **** off the field. Like I said I’m not anti Lane , I’ve actually defended him a lot. I just don’t get ripping a guy with a better resume and a far better recruiter , but you love this guy.
If we put the U connection aside and look at these 2 - Mario and Lane - in the proper context, Mario is the obvious choice.

Mario is:
Clean as a whistle - no questions about character
Proven P5 HC
A few question marks about decision making but nothing that can’t be rectified

Lane is:
A lot of flash and not a lot of substance
Questionable character
History of moving frequently

I’d prefer a HC of high character that will more than likely stay a while. Add in the fact that Mario has the U and SFL connections and I believe it’s a no brainer. Whether or not it comes to fruition is yet to be seen.

What?!?! You think Hernandez is needed to hire Mario???!?!?

Am I understanding you correctly?
You're not. I'm saying that Hernandez is being considered over a far more qualified Jurich because he's another connection to Cristobal. If you're comparing resume there's no reason to consider Hernandez over Jurich other than his connection to Miami and Mario.

As you know I’m not anti Lane, we’ve actually had back in forths where I defended him. I’m just being honest , I don’t see how one rips Mario but slurps Lane.
Because Lane play calling + recruiting is probably better than Mario recruiting. Mario is probably the better recruiter but Lane can call a much better offense. Mario would need to essentially find a OC that is of the same caliber as Lane or Sark.

Aren't we similarly positioned to USC?

Win games and the local kids will come? "Bring back the U". "Why not play at the crib".

All that slogan jazz?
Honestly, no. You saw way more California kids going to USC than Miami kids going to Miami. However, Mario has been recruiting nationally at Oregon. I would think a lot of those relationships could help offset some of the issues recruiting SFL. Outside of the Polynesian kids, if you can recruit a national guy to Oregon, you can probably recruit them to Miami. People forget that even in 2000-2004, a LOT of our key players were from elsewhere.
