Gus Felder new S&C coach

Also, PSU guys actually look like football players. Their OL/DL are monsters compared to ours. (Although their blocking schemes have sucked, the look is what we're talking about)

Not a lot if info on Felder based on his UGA bio (see blow), but resume seems pretty light. Thomas is a long-time SC vet, but as discussed in the detail the Ivey thread, he historically subscribed to the training method that is vastly different than the Hatch/Moffit stye that is so dominant today. And wonder why no Hocke?

Hard to get real excited about this, just on paper at least.

---A former standout at Penn State University, Gus Felder, brings over a decade of coaching experience to the University of Georgia Strength & Conditioning program. Felder was named Assistant Strength & Conditioning Specialist with the Bulldog Nation in 2014.

Felder obtained his Master of Education Degree in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Health Education from Penn State while serving as a graduate assistant football coach. He was also groomed there as an undergraduate and earned his bachelor's in Kinesiology.

Felder played four years with the Nittany Lions from 1998-2002 and was named to the All Big Ten team in 2001 and 2002 at the left tackle and guard positions. After a short stint in the National Football League (NFL) with the Cleveland Browns, he began his coaching career in the high school ranks with Simon Gratz High School (Philadelphia), Melbourne High School (Florida), and State College Area High School (State College Pa) as head and assistant coaching positions. Felder also spent time at Cheyney University, and Clark Atlanta University, serving as the Director Strength and Conditioning and assistant football coach, with both Universities.

He is a native of North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who prepped at Berwick Area High School where he was an All-America offensive lineman. Felder is most inspired by his high school football coach George Curry and his words: "When you work hard great things happen". ---

I live 10 mins away from Berwick & played against them in HS. Those boys are country strong savages. George Curry is PA LEGEND.

Felder, who was actually involved in boxing before playing football, will continue and further develop the team's mixed martial arts program in additional to strength and conditioning duties.

Is that a typical component of training at schools? Seems cool, but wouldn't MMA be an injury risk?

Shouldn't be an injury risk if controlled. I get frustrated when I see defenders being disengaged by stiff arms. A simple "arts" move disengages and negates any stiff arm. I learned similar techniques in Krav Maga. D Lineman need the "punch" as do O lineman. Balance is another component that translates. It has potential.

Until the last couple of weeks I couldn't name a single S&C guy besides Swasey and Moffitt. I will wait to see our guys perform a field before passing judgement as I have no idea who the top guys are. All I know is SEC schools, FSU, Clemson and other top programs look vastly different than our guys.

Hope we are adding Hocke to that equation.. He's the head guy there. Didn't think we would also get a guy who hasn't run a S&C program himself yet.

It seems the #2 guy makes up for that experience and then some. Would probably be the head guy if a certain set of showers weren't so close to his old weight room.

How the **** does this make more sense than bringing in Ivey?

Felder and the rest of these S&C guys are gonna come in, review our S&C program, nutrition program, etc and laugh their *** off.

Theyve got quite the job ahead of them.

Have no idea how John Thomas and these guys train their athletes, so I'm not going to critique this hire until a couple years go by. I'm just glad Swasey is gone for starters.

But John Thomas has a history of preferring HIT, and that fvckin sucks. HIT is **** if it's your foundation for building football players. It doesn't train fast twitch muscle fibers the way the Hatch System/Olympic training does (lower reps, higher intensity, explosive movements)

The 2 schools of training here are...

Hatch System = Heavy weight, lower reps (1-10 range) with an emphasis on hip drive and explosive movements. Anaerobic training.

HIT = Lighter weight, higher reps (20+ range) with an emphasis on rest pause reps (up 2 secs, pause, down 4 secs) and training to failure. Aerobic training.

Ugh, tell me we aren't living in the 80's with our strength training.

I'm certified through NASM and have been a strength coach at the collegiate level (basketball) in case anyone wanted to hit me with the, "what they **** do you know about strength training?"

Maybe that's why he isn't the head guy. Learning a new system.

Why do you think Ivey was under consideration?

Richt said every since he let Swasey go that he was bringing in someone he was familiar and comfortable with.

Georgia has never been a team to get pushed around so I think I will trust Richt on this.

Pete said Ivey was the front runner.
