Hahaha. Ol' "Clay" (his real name is Ricky) with the incessant ratings talk. Same dude that used to do the incessant gO WOke GO brOkE! shtick with the NFL and NBA ratings too.

Dude shouid stick to what's really important in life....getting kicked out of little league games and thinking his version of the story actually makes him look good.

IF Ol' Ricky Travis (or Whitlock too) actually wanted to be honest with his audience he'd just say this:

"You guys are too smart for me to try to incessantly con you with ratings and subscriber talk to get you to engage in some sort of celebration about the impending doom of these networks and leagues that you hate but still watch. We'll celebrate when eSECpn/Disney can no longer afford the broadcast rights of live sports and when the NFL or NBA get less on their next TV deal than the previous one. Until then let's just talk gambling and transsexuals ruining sports. Did you guys know that I voted for Al Gore?!"

He’s playing a character because he realizes how much he cashes in on this shtick

On a similar note, looks like Canesport will be transforming into the Miami On3 site as of July 1. There is an offer of a 1 year subscription for $1.00 to subscribe. You have to join through the On3 website. Ferman hasn't officially announced it on the Rivals site but there have been hints dropped over the past few days...

IDK if he will be retaining the name Canesport or using a new name.

Stuff has been brewing there for a minute. The national Rivals guys drop articles with negative Miami vibes onto the site frequently. Gorney in particular is awful but he is not alone. Guessing this was an opportunity to grow the site and have more opportunity...

espn has had to lay people off and will continue to have to do more. Disney as a whole won't be largely affected but espn itself is not doing well
I don't really like eSECpn so I don't relish defending them but they're fine and will be more than fine- especially since they can bundle their streaming services with Disney's now.

For every layoff you hear at eSECpn there is a monster contract given to Screamin' A or Troy Aikman or Joe Buck. They're just often choosing to budget for "talent" over the hoi polloi in Bristol.

They don't care what you or anybody else thinks as long as you pay for their service, which is what you'll do if you want to watch games.

ESPN sucks and has been steadily getting worse. So sure, overpay your people, they'll just pass it on to us and have people defending them because Clay Travis bashed them.

People see ESPN laying off marginal employees and assume it's because they're losing money but it's really just a re-allocation of funds. They'd rather sink huge amounts of money into broadcast rights and on air personalities that actually move the needle than employ 70,000 no name Sports Center hosts.

ESPN’s original programming is pretty unwatchable but they own CFB and they are going to get a bigger piece of the NFL pie soon as well. They also brought back the NHL at the perfect time. Sportscenter and Stephen A being on TV 30 hours a day is tiring but they control so much of the live sports market they are too big to fail.

I was with some of my boys last week and this actually came up. Everyone starts from the notion that they don't watch ESPN any more because they don't watch SportsCenter like they did as a kid or hate the debate nonsense or just the liberal bent of the hosts.

Then we started to add up the amount of hours we just watched recently between the NHL and NBA playoffs and it was probably more captive audience live tv in a couple of weeks than all the other non-sports live TV that we watch all year combined.

And this will only increase exponentially during football season where we actually will watch College GameDay and the occasional NFL programming in addition to the live games.

So as you essentially said and I tried to explain earlier, as long as you can still afford live rights to sports you're gonna be fine and that's why Travis' shtick is just shtick.

They've moved to streaming. ESPN+ is doing very well actually.

Despite a high-profile stumble by Netflix last quarter, the streaming business remains the division where Wall Street is placing much of its focus, and the company updated its efforts in the space Wednesday, with Disney+ adding 7.9 million subscribers last quarter to hit 137.7 million total. Hulu added 300,000 subscribers to reach 45.6 million subs (a Black Friday promotion last quarter may have pulled forward some growth), and ESPN+ added 1 million subscribers to reach 22.3 million.

The actual number is probably closer to 18 million when you take out the bundle. But they're doing just fine.

I don't really love or hate ESPN. Herbie, JJ Reddick, Jalen Rose, and the PTI guys are probably their only personalities I like. They produce great documentaries and specials from time to time. This need to cheerlead their downfall is strange af. Just don't watch.
