Ephraim Banda

LOLOLOLOL an absolutely miserable hire again. It's obvious Diaz doesn't want any real coaches running his secondary who dare to challenge him when he gets roasted by every passing offense he faces. Aside from Coach Kool our new Defensive staff is no more experienced or qualified as the old one. Truly pathetic job here by Richt allowing Diaz to hire amateurs.

Don't Jump!!!! It will be okay, it will all be okay. I hear your concerns. I'm maybe 3 notches above
"wait and see". But, he's a proven winner. So, I'm very confident he knows what he's doing.

But, if you think Richt has no idea what he's doing . . . read on.

I wonder how he ended up on the list of most wins in his first 15 seasons ranked 4th in the history
of college football. Only Stoops, Switzer and Osborn rank ahead of him.

Do you really think Richt doesn't know what he's doing hiring these guys? These aren't quick decisions.
They are well thought out and are all meant to fit in with what he said:

"I want a very aggressive 4-3 cover 2 shell".

This is what most fans have wanted and miss from the great Canes of the past.

So, lets look at his first two Defensive hires and how they fit his defensive strategy.

His first defensive hire "Kool" the best DL coach in the SEC, if not in the country, according to some.
A guy who creates sacks and tackles for loss at an alarming rate. Call it havoc in the backfield!

He then brings in Diaz as DC and LB coaching experience, who's defenses have had some weaknesses.
But, they also had some great successes. Like producing more turnovers over the last six years than
any other DC. Forcing 40 turnovers in 2014, alone.

So, a monster D Line rush blitz with LB' stunting forcing fumbles and creating havoc in the backfield!
While our DB's are covering and picking off lots of forced int's, call it ball hawking!

If you want this aggressive ball hawking defense you're going to give up some yard's and points.

But, we won't die by a thousand cuts as we did with Doritos.

I now see why he hired who he hired. So, I don't know about you but, I don't think I would second
guess Richt. I know, he knows, how to get the defensive strategy he wants. And I'm going to
give this guy the huge benefit of the doubt. Why? Because he's a proven winner, period!

Its very bad. Especially in a zone blitz scheme. Zone blitz schemes put the most pressure on DBs to have the proper technique.

We needed veteran experienced coaches that specialize in technique not recruiters.

This is very worrisome.
How do you or anyone else here knows what he specializes in?

Awfully green at some spots. I hope Richt knows what he's doing. It's like he spent the bulk of his budget on a few coaches and had to hire inexperienced guys to stay under the cap.

Diaz will be the real secondary coach. Rumph and Banda are just here to recruit and run drills. Diaz will have full control over the secondary.

What???? He will be coaching LB's and Game planning. Where are you getting this info from?

****.
I was going to ask you who you wanted as DB and Safeties coach over the weekend but didn't get a chance.
As an employer, I prefer people to act, as opposed to just reacting.

I have to concur to some extent.

Thats what will make this D fun to watch. Teams that had no business being in a game past the 1st quarter we should dominate again.

The concern comes in when we face a good Spread team.

FYI... No HC is beyond questioning. Lets not forget, Richt never won the Big game. There are question marks.

Devils advocate, he has been coaching the secondary for a while and exclusively with Miss State, albeit without a big title.

Could've done better. At least Rumph and Banda are only focusing on one unit a piece

Their secondary also led the nation in fewest 20+ passing plays for whatever that's worth

Based on everything i have read/seen, their safeties played deep for that reason.....so i think it had more to deal with scheme than anything.

I could have sworn I heard on this board that Manny Ds weakness was susceptibility to big plays.

Chalk another one up to made up facts to support hate.

At what point do the mods just end this and ban the trolls?

The weakness of his D is the fact they are extremely aggressive and can get burned at times if guys are out of place....but i think that's why the safeties play deep to ensure there's a last line of defense to prevent bad plays from being backbreaking.

Yes but I am trying to figure out how its susceptible to big plays if it lead the nation in having the fewest big pass plays.

More so susceptible to the intermediate stuff, TE routes. Like the good ol' days.

It's a pretty fascinating dynamic for me. On the one side you have the guy who played at a high level, is an alum, was coached in the NFL at the position and as a S. He went the high school route and will now be a pseudo position coach for a position that is the easiest to play in the two-read defense (what Diaz runs- not to mention Ohio State, TCU and Alabama as well). The nickel corner has the toughest responsibilities in Diaz' defense. The boundary corner only has two reads in coverage and plays robber on the out route.

The positives for Rumph are pretty obvious; ties to this area, success in a top-level high school program in the area, ability to relate and recruit as he's known to be a mentor to many. Experience running a program is a plus.

When I read about Diaz the first thing that I thought was, "he's going to bring someone who knows his defense with him." The reason why I thought that is because of the importance of the S's in his defense. He truly needs someone to be with his safeties all the time.

The positives for Banda; I'm a big fan of hiring individuals to a specific responsibility who have actually gone through the graduate assistant route. The GA is involved in so many areas with the coach and has a chance to learn the ins and outs of big-time college football. To stick in that role and advance you have to earn the trust of your HC as well as demonstrate actual talent in teaching. People scoff at Quality Control, but that's an important position where you really get to grow as a coach. How many hours do you believe Diaz has spent with Banda regarding his defense and what he needs his safeties to do? A lot would be the answer.

Coupling them together gives you a bit of an interesting full defensive backs coach. One with head man experience (albeit on the large school high school level) and playing experience in the area. The other with a unique and total understanding of the defense who is a grinder and known to have earned everything he's gotten. If we could morph them into one person it'd be a home run, but you also get the benefit of having two individuals who can be in different places at the same time.

I'd have rather had Corey Raymond- obviously- but I'm honestly intrigued by what they've done here and it will be fascinating to see how it works out. At the very least it will speed the maturation of the defense for the returning players to learn his system year one, and almost guarantees Diaz will coach the LB's and Richt will coach QB's.

why are people so down on the 2 hires. first off rumph was a great hs coach. its no coincidence that some of the best db prospects in hs come from his school.

they guys proven he can coach. yes rumph has never coached in college but is a former cb who has turned multiple db prospects into 4 star recruits.

as for banda he earned a promotion. his players loved him and sound like would run through a wall for him. i like the staff so far. its better then what we had under golden. by a long shot.

same people ripping rookie db coach hires are same ones clamoring to keep beard which id of been ok with. richt has done a solid job and for the record thomas brown has more then 2 yrs as a rb coach and at every stop in h is 4 yrs his rb's produced big time.

At the very least Panda knows how to tap a keg. That's about 1 more appreciable skill than most guys had on the previous staff.

This guy might actually be a good coach. Dbs from msu are showing the guy love and former texas db quadre diggs who is in the nfl , spoke highly of him. That's big considering he wasn't the official db coach.
