Ephraim Banda

Safeties coach has responsibility over what, 5 players total - and is under the Dbs coach? Sounds like the perfect place for an up and comer to cut his teeth. I think Diaz will be hands on with Dbs, leave the DL to Kool. Linebackers . . . .

His experience working with Diaz can't be understated. He knows the D inside and out and will be able to teach it better than probably anyone outside of Hughes. If it was a first time coach who hadn't been with Diaz for years, I could see the *****ing. I think the interview with the Miss St safety speaks volumes. This way Manny can focus on game planning and LBs. Makes tons of sense. Again, not sure who you expected once it was announced that Rumph will coach CBs.

Well not to hyped on this hire, the Rumph hire or the Diaz hire...

Always thought Manny Diaz was going to end up being DC. ( Home town guy, recruiting.) Not surprised or disappointed in his hire. Wish we could have gotten Aranda, but that was never going to happen with $EC money being tossed his way. As for his assistants, I think he should hire guys that he wants and know his system.

Coach Banda just said on twitter

"What a awesome feeling, I grew up a Canes fan & have pics to prove it 😉. I cant wait to continue on the tradition of great DB play at The U!"

Give the man a chance he will help the safeties make an easy transition into Diaz's defense

Weird hire. I get that it's only Safeties but Richt has no relationship with this guy so this is strictly a Diaz hire. Richt's got a lot of trust in Diaz right now.

It's a little scary knowing that we've got two young bloods coaching up DBs especially considering how weak our secondary is. I really hope they can put it together because we're going to rely on some inexperienced players this season.

It's really not weird at all. Richt has hired Diaz to the HC of the defense because Richt will be neck deep in calling plays and coaching QBs. He's letting Diaz pick his own guy at a very significant position in Diaz's defense.

Agree. Richt is putting a lot of faith in Diaz. Could work, or it could fail spectacularly.

Exactly how I see it. Richt is a guy who trusts the guys he hires. He's going all-in with Diaz and is letting him bring the guy in that he wants to bring in.

Diaz can hit the ground running because Kool is going to do his thing, Diaz can coach the LBs the way he wants, and Panda is basically Diaz Jr. coaching Safeties. Diaz doesn't have to take a bunch of time coaching all his coaches this way.

Well said and spot on. I swear you've done some coaching before or you're just a logical person.

my own opinion, which i am sure no one really cares about, but i'll give it to you anways...Just because someone isn't a big name or a **** hire doesn't mean the guy can't coach. How about a different perspective....you've got to respect a guy who was doing very little with his life for a long time, gets off the couch and makes a college football team. It's not easy to be a 28 year old playing with kids 10 years younger while not doing it for a decade. Then he gets his degree and get a GA spot at Texas. Does anyone realize how hard it is to get a GA spot at a major university while not playing major DI football? This guy obviously has something that people like, relate to, and gravitate towards. Give the poor guy a chance. least he has an endorsement from his players for his style and sounds like he will get lot of out kids.

LOLOLOLOL an absolutely miserable hire again. It's obvious Diaz doesn't want any real coaches running his secondary who dare to challenge him when he gets roasted by every passing offense he faces. Aside from Coach Kool our new Defensive staff is no more experienced or qualified as the old one. Truly pathetic job here by Richt allowing Diaz to hire amateurs.
It's a safeties coach. Honestly, go drink laundry detergent

I think his problem is he does drink that daily.

STOP making so much sense LOL.

Its very bad. Especially in a zone blitz scheme. Zone blitz schemes put the most pressure on DBs to have the proper technique.

We needed veteran experienced coaches that specialize in technique not recruiters.

This is very worrisome.

Your right Franchise..The thing is coach panda is coach Diaz asst. just like Richt jr. is to coach Richts..They both know there mentor systems, from what I know about Richt jr. and read about Panda is they have a very high football IQ's (they smart)..So give these young guns a chance..Dont know to much about coach Rumph only what has been said on here, but seems like he also may have the IQ for the next level...**** if it comes down to it coach KOOL can coach the front 7 if need be..so lets them prove or disprove their worth before passing judgement..Im sure coach Richt will shut it down if its not working, cause coach is ****ed about the UGA mess and want to win a NC at Miami..!

"We have a very great assistant coach named Ephraim Banda," Bryant said. "He is one of the best assistant coaches that I have dealt with. He is an outstanding coach. He knows everything about the game and everything about Coach (Manny) Diaz' defense. He has been with him for a long time since he was at Texas.

"He is just a great man. He breaks everything down to us. He makes us fit in every play and go hard on every snap to show what we can do on the back end."

Already better than the recluse Paul Williams

Don't Jump!!!! It will be okay, it will all be okay. I hear your concerns. I'm maybe 3 notches above
"wait and see". But, he's a proven winner. So, I'm very confident he knows what he's doing.

But, if you think Richt has no idea what he's doing . . . read on.

I wonder how he ended up on the list of most wins in his first 15 seasons ranked 4th in the history
of college football. Only Stoops, Switzer and Osborn rank ahead of him.

Do you really think Richt doesn't know what he's doing hiring these guys? These aren't quick decisions.
They are well thought out and are all meant to fit in with what he said:

"I want a very aggressive 4-3 cover 2 shell".

This is what most fans have wanted and miss from the great Canes of the past.

So, lets look at his first two Defensive hires and how they fit his defensive strategy.

His first defensive hire "Kool" the best DL coach in the SEC, if not in the country, according to some.
A guy who creates sacks and tackles for loss at an alarming rate. Call it havoc in the backfield!

He then brings in Diaz as DC and LB coaching experience, who's defenses have had some weaknesses.
But, they also had some great successes. Like producing more turnovers over the last six years than
any other DC. Forcing 40 turnovers in 2014, alone.

So, a monster D Line rush blitz with LB' stunting forcing fumbles and creating havoc in the backfield!
While our DB's are covering and picking off lots of forced int's, call it ball hawking!

If you want this aggressive ball hawking defense you're going to give up some yard's and points.

But, we won't die by a thousand cuts as we did with Doritos.

I now see why he hired who he hired. So, I don't know about you but, I don't think I would second
guess Richt. I know, he knows, how to get the defensive strategy he wants. And I'm going to
give this guy the huge benefit of the doubt. Why? Because he's a proven winner, period!

Panda didn't coach them.

Devils advocate, he has been coaching the secondary for a while and exclusively with Miss State, albeit without a big title.

Could've done better. At least Rumph and Banda are only focusing on one unit a piece

Their secondary also led the nation in fewest 20+ passing plays for whatever that's worth

Based on everything i have read/seen, their safeties played deep for that reason.....so i think it had more to deal with scheme than anything.

I could have sworn I heard on this board that Manny Ds weakness was susceptibility to big plays.

Chalk another one up to made up facts to support hate.

At what point do the mods just end this and ban the trolls?

The weakness of his D is the fact they are extremely aggressive and can get burned at times if guys are out of place....but i think that's why the safeties play deep to ensure there's a last line of defense to prevent bad plays from being backbreaking.

Yes but I am trying to figure out how its susceptible to big plays if it lead the nation in having the fewest big pass plays.

So he knows what the DC wants to do and that's bad because......?

When we had Reed and then Taylor, who was the safeties coach? What about when we had Blades or whomever else? I can honestly say I don't remember, but they turned out okay....yes?

Jamal Carter seems excited about the hire image.webp

I can't question Richt yet. U can't win that many games in the SEC and be an idiot. Kool is the guy who will drive the defense by dominating the trenches. You need some young guys who are ambitious to recruit especially.
