DE Williams: "Miami is out ahead"

Always gotta be weary of a highly regarded kid that doesn't get a whole lot of love from the home state school...especially when they have 3 commits at the position already, and they include 3* OOS prospects.

I'd take this kid regardless...but perhaps LSU knows something we don't...no idea why they slow played the kid early on.

Word on the street is that the kid is a project. Very high ceiling, but will need a redshirt and perhaps another year before he begins to contribute. LSU might be looking for options that help them in the more immediate future?

These are not my words, just something I read somewhere, maybe even here. But it makes sense as a reason for a school like LSU to pass on the kid.

The only thing I can say about Williams being slow played by LSU is it's not the talent but the fit in the scheme. As been mentioned before, he is a player in the mold of McCord and Holliet, closer to an OLB in a 3-4 than a DE in a 4-3. The only counterpoint is that LSU plays with an undersized speed rush kid in Mingo already. Maybe they don't want that, cause while Mingo is a terror off the edge, I have seen him get pushed around in the run game. Now pertaining to Williams and Miami, I remember Peter said that he is most similar to Holliet and that at this point Holliet is the better talent and if that really is the case I feel a schools could be better suited elsewhere, as Williams isn't gonna contribute for a minute. In the end regardless, I trust this regime's evaluations above all else.

I've heard the talk that's he's at least one redshirt year away from contributing, maybe a season after that as well.

If we could bring him in with a JuCo DL or two, then we wouldn't need him to come in and contribute right away.

Going after top LA kids? I've been following recruiting a long time and I've seen this movie a lot of times and know how it ends.

Like swagger said, I refuse to get excited about him until he suits up for us.

Getting him would put us in good position for his boy Garrett Brumfield (OG) next year.

Missed this post before but how is that kid looking these days? He was a huge prospect right out of the gates but I havent heard anything about him in a while.

You want to talk about getting goons on this team? He might be a model citizen and classroom nerd but if you go by his appearance that kid looks like one of those dudes wearing the wedding dresses and carrying a rocket launcher.

The last few LA kids we went after that LSU didn't quite give a **** about...

Jacoby Briscoe
LaRon Byrd
Derron Thomas
Akieem Jolla

Not exactly "stealing" anyone from LSU.

IIRC, LSU was after Vegas Franklin pretty hard...so, I won't include him. He just happened to be the best 'Cane of the bunch, albeit an average talent.

I just think if LSU is half assing a local talent, especially in lieu of "lesser" prospects and OOS guys...its telling.

A little too early to be calling Briscoe out, don't you think?

Already moved over to offense...

ehhh...we'll see. But, I've seen this kind of story to many times.

Agree. Even though it Is an early switch (during his RS year), DL to OL position changes don't often pan out.

Jeremy Lewis's relative success has me optimistic. Wish he had moved earlier.

Also Byrd is on an NFL roster.

JAG during his time at Miami.

Truth, but he has enough talent to make a roster in the NFL.

But, a JAG at Miami...and being real...lots of collegiate JAGs get a shot in the NFL...the NFL isn't about what you've done, its about what you will or can do. As is, Byrd hasn't had a catch this year and is Arizona's last guy on the depth chart at the position.

I'm not going to make this a Byrd thread, but, it should be noted that our last decade of recruiting Louisiana hasn't exactly yielded results.

Hope Williams is different, but only time will tell...but as is, LSU kind of half assing his recruitment isn't exactly giving me the warm fuzzies.

If he has enough talent to be JAG in the NFL he has more than enough to do something in college. The NFL is not in the business of just keeping players on a roster for fun (except for Tim Tebow), the kid has some talent.

As for Williams, maybe he is not good and LSU is right, maybe he is good and LSU is wrong. He has a lot of nice offers (I know some could be fake) but many are recruiting this kid. I would take him.

The first part isn't true at all...

The second part...also isn't true. Bottom 5-ish of an NFL roster is basically there for projects and special teamers. The difference between Byrd being on the active roster and Neiko Thorpe, Junior Hemmingway, and Josh Bellamy could be nothing more than strategy to protect their project from another team picking him up off the waiver wire to be their project.
