College football: Former Lely star Darion Hall turning into threat at Tennessee State
Barbara Boxleitner

NAPLES, Fla. - Darion Hall had to wait for a chance on the football field.

Three years in the Tennessee State University program, the Lely High School graduate has become an all-purpose threat. “He’s been a jewel for us,” running backs coach Larry Williams said. “He’s very dangerous with the football in his hands.”

Williams said it was a challenge to get the senior transfer from University of Miami into the lineup because of the talent ahead of him at running back. He lauded Hall’s patience for his perseverance.

“We had a couple of seniors ahead of him,” Williams said. “Most kids would have gotten discouraged.”

Instead, Hall worked on fundamentals and skills, and appeared in eight games last year after just two his first season with the team. Last year he rushed 19 times for 158 yards and one touchdown, and had a 9-yard reception. Hall was a gunner and a blocker on special teams.

This season he has taken advantage of his opportunities, especially as a return man, which he hadn’t been previously for the Tigers. “Darion had an opportunity to carry the ball, and he never looked back,” Williams said.

Hall enters Saturday’s regular-season finale first on the team with 15 kickoff returns for 420 yards, including a 100-yard touchdown. He was second in rushing with 47 carries for 255 yards, and had nine receptions for 72 yards.

“I’m really glad I was able to get on the field and show my abilities,” Hall said. “I have fun just helping my team try to get a win.”

“I think I improved in knowing my role and just grinding as hard as I can,” he said.

Hall’s best performance came in a 56-42 loss to Eastern Kentucky. He scored on the 100-yard kick return, and finished with five returns for 174 yards. He rushed 17 times for 81 yards to lead the ground attack and added two receptions for seven yards.

Hall was recognized as the Ohio Valley Conference specialist of the week and the Sports Network special teams player, the first Tiger this season to earn the conference and Football Championship Subdivision weekly awards. “I was pretty excited about it,” he said.

The touchdown return tied a school record and gave the team its first points. Hall said he raced through a hole, broke a tackle attempt, and headed down the sideline. “There were people behind me, but my teammates were blocking them,” Hall said. “They kept kicking me the ball. I was actually surprised.”

Since the Eastern Kentucky effort, Hall has led the team in rushing twice more, with his season high of 86 on 15 carries during a Nov. 8 win over Austin Peay State. Saturday, the Tigers (5-6) play at Murray State.

“He can run inside and outside,” Williams said. “He has very good instincts. He knows how to pick up his blocking.”

“If they try to arm tackle him, he’s strong enough to break the tackle,” he said. “He’s elusive to make you miss.”

Glenville's Latwan Anderson resurfaces, signs with Notre Dame College

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Five years ago, Latwan Anderson was considered one of the 15 best high school football recruits in the country.
On Wednesday, he signed with Notre Dame College, the Division II school in South Euclid, hoping to resurrect a once promising career. Anderson is enrolled full time at NDC, living on campus, and has two years of eligibility remaining, according to NDC coach Adam Howard.

"Latwan bounced around. He's had some things going on,'' Howard said. "Much like the Doniel (Gambrell) story, he has kid now, and he's really kind of matured and he's been declared eligible by the NCAA and has a couple years left.''

Gambrell, also a Glenville graduate, landed at NDC after starting at Eastern Michigan and is supporting a wife and three children while working and going to school. He could be selected in the NFL Draft in May.

"Coming out of high school, he was one of the best players in the country,'' Howard said of Anderson. "We're happy to have him. He has a support system here in Cleveland and he's serious about coming to school and getting his degree, and we're excited to have him.
Anderson, a defensive back and kick returner, was the 15th-ranked overall football recruit by Rivals.com in 2010.

He was even more highly regarded as a sprinter. He recorded the nation's fastest high school 200-meter time (20.92) and second-fastest 400 (47.26), as well as the second-fastest indoor 55-meter time (6.38).

"He's an elite level talent. He has Olympic speed. He'd going to make a difference at this level,'' Howard said.

At Glenville, Anderson was being recruited by Ohio State and USC, among others, and initially committed to West Virginia, but didn't sign. He wound up at Miami (Fla.) on a track scholarship, where he was to play football. He left after a few months and later enrolled at two community colleges.

Howard said he had been in contact with Anderson for several years through Scott Niedzwiecki, an NDC consultant who coached Anderson at St. Edward and later at Glenville. Anderson, who began his high school career at Euclid, scared off some recruiters while in high school because he had been in and out of trouble, including being kicked out of St. Edward after a confrontation with a teacher.

08/23/12 - NEW MEXICO BREAKOUT STAR: OLB Javarie Johnson - A transfer from Maryland, Johnson's redshirt freshman season at New Mexico consisted of one play, the season-opening kickoff in which he tore his ACL. Johnson has had almost a year to recover and has added 20 pounds to his frame. He is among the most athletic players on defense who has to get comfortable with the defensive scheme to utilize that athletic ability. If he can grasp the concepts, he can give New Mexico a formidable tandem with fellow OLB Joseph Harris and make the defense more pressure-oriented. - The Sports Xchange

FIU Panthers dismiss former Columbus star, LSU recruit Jakhari Gore

In the latest blight for FIU, running back Jakhari Gore was kicked off the team Monday after he was arrested on charges of robbery and false imprisonment.
BY DAVID J. NEAL

FIU dismissed transfer walk-on running back Jakhari Gore, a former Columbus High star and LSU recruit, from the football program Monday hours after Gore’s arrest on charges of robbery by sudden snatching and false imprisonment.

Of greater effect on FIU’s season opener Saturday against Maryland is the questionable academic standing of junior cornerback Richard Leonard and senior wide receiver Glenn Coleman. Both were on the scout teams during Monday’s light practice.

Gore also started training camp on the outside because of academic shortcomings.

That changed three days into camp. But Gore worked only individual drills, never with the first or second team offense in 11-on-11 or 7-on-7 drills.

Gore was being held on $5,000 bond for each charge as of Monday afternoon.

He, Rhodes (arrested for firing a gun into the air on campus while intoxicated) and offensive lineman Prince Matt (arrested for misdemeanor marijuana possession) have been dismissed from FIU’s program since Turner took the job in January.

“He is dismissed permanently from the team,” Turner said after Monday morning’s light practice. “It’s a very disappointing situation. A guy who has gone through a lot of things … brought him back, gave him a second chance in training camp. Once training camp’s over, once we get past the first game, the roster goes down a little bit [from 104 to 99]. He probably would’ve been one of the guys not on it. He’s got some things to take care of.

“It’s extremely disappointing that anybody would do that,” Turner said. “We’re still getting the culture [of the football program] where we want it. Obviously, we’re not there yet. [We’re] bringing in the guys that do the things we want them to do or the guys who are currently on the team changing and doing the things we want them to do. There’s a lot of guys who aren’t here because they weren’t willing to do that and there’s some other guys who won’t be here because they’re not doing it to the level I want. It’s unfortunate.

“We’re giving them a tremendous opportunity. The guys who were here when I got here? We’re giving them plenty of chances to do it the way we want it done. Some of them haven’t.”

STRENGTHS: Built like a full-grown man with a large frame and strong muscle definition throughout his body. Nimble feet with the lateral quickness to explode in any direction and chase down the action in pursuit. Carries his weight so natural for a 340+ pounder, shifting his weight well with the agile footwork to quickly change directions.
Plays hard with a feisty motor. Applies quick pressure by splitting gaps, using a quick arm-over swim move and bull-rushing his opponent deep into the pocket. Has the hand strength and initial get-off momentum to bully blockers on their heels, showing leverage and active limbs. Keeps his eyes on the ball and shows the awareness to anticipate and track plays.

WEAKNESSES: Entered the 2013 season a bit overweight and struggled to dominate early in the year following a breakout 2012 campaign. Needs to develop counter moves after he's initially stonewalled at the point of attack and didn't have many answers for the consistent double-teams he saw in South Bend. Strong, but needs to consistently use his power at the point of attack to wreak havoc and dispose of blockers.

High character kid, but needs to control his emotions on the field and play consistently focused and level-headed for all four quarters. Medical check will be important with expected postseason knee surgery.

COMPARES TO: B.J. Raji, Packers -- While he flashes terrific talent, Nix wasn't able to consistently make the type of impact that many expected in 2013. Nix is light on his feet and carries his weight tremendously for a 340+ pounder with range to make plays up and down the line of scrimmage.

--Dane Brugler/Rob Rang

PLAYER OVERVIEW
The Florida native comes from a tough background, but the 325-pounder has a bright football future if he stays dedicated to the game. Nix was highly recruited out of high school and chose Notre Dame over several in-state programs, including Florida, Florida State and Miami (Fla.).
After redshirting in 2010, he started 11 games as a first-year player at the nose guard position, anchoring the middle of the Irish's three-man front. Nix finished with 45 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and a half-sack.

After a breakthrough 2012, Nix was overweight to start the '13 season. Just as he started to round into shape, he missed two games with knee tendinitis that ultimately turned out to be a torn meniscus. When healthy, Nix displayed the unique blend of power and burst that has earned him first round buzz throughout much of his career.

He earned All-Independent first team honors from the media, and hired an agent in December to prepare for the 2014 NFL Draft despite ongoing rehab for his knee injury - which was due to require platelet-rich plasma therapy and surgery after the 2013 season, according to Irish coach Brian Kelly.

Nix has struggled with the pressure and expectations of playing for a high-profile program away from home, but he also flashes a rare skill-set for a player his size and strength.

Add the hustle, competitive drive and love of football and Nix presents an enticing prospect for NFL evaluators and he will receive attention by teams drafting in the top 10. The knee injury does create some concern, but few prospects have his combination of fluid athleticism, natural power and sheer size.

Get To Know Wide Receiver Quinton Dunbar
Posted May 11, 2015
Jake Kring-Schreifels
Associate Writer

The Redskins’ latest college free agent signing, Florida wide receiver Quinton Dunbar, is, according to his former teammate, a dedicated worker.

“He comes out every day as a professional,” Latroy Pittman told Gatorcountry.com. “He never badmouths anybody or acts out in any kind of way. His attitude has stayed the same. He just works hard and stays focused.”

That should come in handy as the 12th wide receiver on the team’s roster.

Dunbar played all four years at Florida, totaling 49 games with 33 starts and recording 111 career receptions for 1,500 yards with eight touchdowns

An ongoing highlight throughout his career there was his 32-game streak of catching at least one pass, which lasted from 2011 against Furman until mid-season 2014 against LSU.

“One of the main things I have focused on is getting my body right, and that's gaining more weight and getting stronger,” he said to Foxsports.com in February. “The running aspect was already there. I'm fast enough, but I have to get my body right and get stronger.”

Quinton Dunbar knows a great deal about playing on big stages because of his time at Florida. Now he wants to prove he can make an NFL roster as an undrafted rookie.

Quinton Dunbar was picked up by the Washington Redskins in mid-May as a college free agent. He's another wide receiver trying to make a name for himself and has extra motivation because he was not called to the podium. Here's what you need to know about him:

#1 . Quinton Dunbar hails from Miami, Florida and he was a four star recruit coming out of Booker T. Washington High School in Florida. He had offers from Arkansas, Michigan, Purdue, Tennessee and West Virginia. According to Rivals.com, he was the 25th best player in the state of Florida, and the 24th best player at his position.

#2 . He redshirted his freshman season at Florida (2010) and as a redshirt freshman (2011) started 5 of the 12 games he played in and scored his first career touchdown against Furman on a 29 yard reception. In his sophomore season (2012), he played in 13 games, starting in 9 of them. That season he ranked second on the team with 36 receptions and tallied season highs with 5 receptions for 77 yards against Louisville in the Sugar Bowl.

#3 . His best season was as a junior (2013). He started 12 games and caught 40 passes for 548 yards (13.7 yards per catch). According to Bleacher Report's SEC Football Lead Writer Barrett Sallee, former Florida offensive coordinator Brent Pease was proud of Dunbar's growth:

"I'm really proud of that kid. He has come along so far attitude-wise, accountability, his work ethic on the field, and it's really starting to show up. He just does things right. He can play a bunch of positions now. So I'm proud of him and I think it's going to carry over to reach the goals that he's setting for himself."

#4 . In his final season with Florida (2014), he started in 8 games and played in 11. He had career highs in yards (107) and touchdowns (2) against Eastern Kentucky. Another, more impressive, stat was the fact that he had a 32 game streak with a catch. It started in 2011 against Furman and lasted until 2014 against LSU. According to gatorcountry.com's Andrew Spivey, former Florida head coach Will Muschamp recognized his receiver's mature nature in the face of being benched against Georgia:

"Quinton went in and did a good job. So you go in and cash in on your opportunities when you have it. Man down, man up and that's what he did. So I'm very proud of how he handled the situation."

Dunbar's mindset and maturity make him an offensive leader. A fellow teammate, Latroy Pittman, knew this first hand:

"He comes out every day as a professional. He never badmouths anybody or acts out in any kind of way. His attitude has stayed the same. He just works hard and stays focused."

#5 . So how did he become a Washington Redskin?

According to Redskins.com's Jake Kring-Schreifels, draftees who play for big time programs is something that general manager Scot McCloughan pays attention to:

"He likes players that come from big conferences, that know what it's like to play in high-pressure games with big crowds and atmospheres."

Dunbar felt like Florida was the right fit for him in that regard:

"I feel like at Florida -- we played against the toughest competition -- and it got me ready for the pros because the SEC presses a lot and that's what they like to do in the NFL. I feel like I'm prepared. I just have to continue to get my body right and show improvement."

Bottom Line: Quinton Dunbar has the intangibles, speed and length to make the Redskins' roster. At 201 lbs, he needs to gain 15-20 more to be able to deal with the physical nature of the NFL. Especially if he is used as a slot receiver.

Broncos dismiss sophomore cornerback Raheam Buxton from the team
By Adam Hernandez
on September 23, 2011

Western Michigan head football coach Bill Cubit announced after Thursday’s practice that sophomore cornerback Raheam Buxton is no longer with the program.

“He’s done. I wish him well, needs to go,” Cubit said of the sophomore who started five games as true freshman, but had played in only one of the Broncos’ three games this fall.

“We want him to finish up (the semester) strong,” Cubit said of Buxton, from Pakokee, Fla., keeping the details vague. “We’ll give him all the academic services and help him out. He needs a fresh start.”

According to Graham Couch of the Kalamazoo Gazette, Buxton’s time with the WMU football program has been both interesting and tragic. Couch writes that after arriving late due to an NCAA clearinghouse issue, he played early as a freshman. That season however was overshadowed by the shooting death of his 21-year-old brother Paul the night before a Broncos game.

Former FSU WR Dent guilty of misdemeanor battery
Sean Rossman, Tallahassee Democrat 4:28 p.m. EDT September 30, 2014

Former Florida State wide receiver Greg Dent was found guilty last week of a misdemeanor battery charge in connection with a June 2013 incident in which a woman accused him of forcing her to have *** with him.

On Sept. 24, his attorney Nathan Prince, argued for the lesser charge of battery and a jury found him guilty on the battery charge, which carries with it six months of probation, Prince said.

Dent, 24, a senior from Belle Glade, was originally arrested on a felony charge of sexual battery on June 9, 2013 after a night out with friends at a local club. The woman said she spent the night in Dent's apartment and awoke in the middle of the night to Dent trying to kiss her and forcing to remove her clothes. The woman said she ran out of the apartment and called police, according to court documents

Dent was rearrested in January after he missed a court date and was in jail until his bond was reinstated in April.

Prince said Dent is no longer enrolled at FSU, but plans on re-enrolling and will try to rejoin the football team. Dent was promptly suspended from the team following his arrest, causing him to miss the Seminoles' entire 2013 national championship run.

"If that's what the court of law says," FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher said on Monday. "There's no winners in any of those situations. I understand that."

"I'm extremely happy for him that that turned out," Fisher added. "I think Greg is an outstanding young man, always did."

I noticed some people have been complaining about how the current staff has a high attrition rate and decided to take a closer look. I counted a player only if they signed a LOI with Miami.

Quarterback Gray Crow not expected to wear a Miami Hurricanes uniform again

University of Miami quarterback Gray Crow, a 6-3, 224-pound redshirt junior from Clearwater, will not dress out for games this season, according to a source. He was told as such by UM in the past couple of days, the source said.

He has not competed in fall camp, but as of Monday afternoon, was still listed on the roster and in the media guide.

The source said Crow, 21, is still attending Miami on an athletic scholarship. He is expected to graduate in December with a political science major. He is expected to take the LSAT and apply to law school.

Crow, listed as 6-3 and 224 pounds, played in two games his redshirt freshman season, completing six of eight passes for 55 yards and a touchdown against Savannah State.

A three-star prospect when he came to UM in January of 2012 to participate in spring ball, Crow was moved to fullback/H-back last season, but was moved back to quarterback when Kevin Olsen was dismissed from the program.

“The idea behind the move back in July was give him an opportunity to play, based on our depth at quarterback,'' coach Al Golden said in mid-September of 2014. "We were hoping he could help us at H-back, at fullback, at long-snapper or in some way on special teams. He talked to us [Tuesday] and we moved him back.”

In the spring game, Crow led one long drive that resulted in a 12-yard touchdown pass to walk-on Clayton Turner.
For whatever reasons, the coaches didn't appreciate Crow. I have a feeling he'll be a great lawyer. He already is a first-class young man.
