Those teams spend big on elite HS prospects at QB, we spend big on top proven portal QBs. It’s been said we have tried to spend for a HS qb too but it hasn’t panned out.

I’ve watched Nickel play enough to believe he will be a big time college QB, and doesn’t need to sit on a bench for 3 years. And no QB is proven coming out of high school, regardless of the ranking or NIL spend.

I’m a big fan of this kid. Obviously he’s not the Cam/Beck level but when we were falling short on Mateer I wanted him over guys like Mendoza. He could cook in Dawsons offense imo
 
Next year, If it’s someone else let’s call a spade a spade, there would be something wrong with our ability to sign and develop quarterbacks from the high school ranks. We’d have 0% hit rate over the past 4 years.

Yeah, and he played like shlt in that game and hasn’t gotten any better. He will never start here for a season and those are facts and if you don’t believe that, then you have no ability to evaluate what a quarterback can and can’t do.

The staff likes him as the backup quarterback this year to allow nickel to get his red shirt. Do not read anything more into that other than that. Those are the facts and they did not pay up to keep Emery, Emery had no other suitors that would promise him a starting job and obviously if you’ve seen him play, you can understand why.

My money is on Nickel to take the next step but if Beck has a great year and Dawson is still here QB transfers will be beating down the door to play here

I think our staff likes our guys as well but our staff is realistic. Judd is nowhere close and Emory is just not that guy. Nickel is too young, imo, so the obvious answer is a portal. Portal QBs will be banging down our door assuming Beck has a really good season. It would be dumb to pass on that kind of oppty. After that, 2027 is an open comp and whoever on the roster wins it, that's our guy for a couple years. But for 2026, it's gotta be a portal, imo.

No one thought Beck would be here one year ago.
Ward came out of nowhere from 2 years ago.

Maybe someone like a Connor Weigman, who finally puts it together at Houston?
He'd be another 1 year guy before Nickel takes over.

Yes, I do know he started that game, and I also know majority of the passes he threw were batted down by the defense line, just like the FSU game that year. And the reason why, because he’s a group of five quarterback at best.
 
Interesting Debate on the pod today regarding potential QB transfer options (Lagway vs. Bailey):
