DAILY DEBATE: What conference do you want Miami to join?

As a resident Chicago Cane I selfishly like the idea of being in the BIG because I'd be within a 2-4hr drive of many of the Canes road games ( w/ Northwestern here in the city). I also like the idea of taking the West Coast trips against Pac teams.

However i disagree with the sentiment that we'd have a more "manageable" schedule in the BIG. Dont quote me but it feels like we've had a tougher time with BIG schools over the past 20+ years than SEC schools am I right? The only BIG victory i recall is against Ohio State 2011 w/ QB Jacory, those schools just seem to have our number with their style of play. We're probably closer to .500 against the SEC schools in the same timespan.

If any of you stat gurus would pull the numbers i think we'd all love to see the head-to-head comparisons by conference

If the B12 will take Miami, I say get in while you can. Best fit across the board.
The B12 is going to end up playing all its games on a soccer field in Luxembourg as international authorities search for Brett Yormark who apparently was last seen in Dubai going by the name "Ron Mexico".

That said, they still have a brighter future than the ACC.

https://stassen.com/cgi-bin/records/confres.pl?start=2003&end=2023&team=MiamiFlorida&limit=200 We haven't been good against either in the last 20 years unfortunately.

Or lets get crazy - what if the ACC is able to pull off a power move and cuts the deadweight, but gets TAMU (angry at sharing spotlight with UT) and Notre Dame to come aboard as full members?

Sorry, mi amigo, but no school worth a crap is joining the ACC.

It'd be like the guy on death row at Raiford telling his buddy in the free world, "Hey man, you should come up and hang out for a while. It's an upgrade from where you are now."

Once FSU and Clemson announce their leaving, it's Katy bar the door.

We need an exit strategy, not an improvement plan

Miami is a national brand and for me the BIG gives us the best platform to explore and exploit that. Games coast coast border to border. I really dont have a problem going to any conference providing the money is competitive but more importantly the administration continues to show full financial committment to the program. Without that, doesnt matter where we go, we couldnt win the putrid ACC just by existing.

First choice is B1G but SEC would be fine as well. If we get stuck in a watered down ACC or the Big 12, we are are closer to a G5 program than a P2 program. We will lose all top recruits to B1G and SEC schools and the recruits we do develop will transfer the first moment they get. Maybe we get into the playoff if we win out the ACC but then get absolutely dominated year after year because we can not match the talent of the P2. Even if we get more money in the short term in the Big 12, I dont think we will be able to overcome the talent hit that comes from being outside the P2.

P2 is the requirement and in about 5 years it won't matter WHICH of the two you are in as they will be working together just like the AFC / NFC in dominating air time. Any conference outside of the P2 will be getting about 20% of the prime time national broadcast time and about 20% of the media payout. Of the two, the Big 10 would have some historically interesting rivalries ... Nebraska, Penn State, Notre Dame (even if they are in on a scheduling arrangement), and possibly FSU. Better conference for increased potential access to federal research funding ... better overall $$$ growth for the entire university.

Chances SEC invites us? 5% maybe. Chances the B1G invites us? I'd say better than 80% when all is said and done.

But that doesn't change that the SEC is by far the better option once emotions are set aside.

The B1G travel would/will be absolutely brutal — there's no way around it for a school in a geographical outpost like Miami competing in a conference that spreads from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

Easy for us sitting in front of our computers at home or the office to not think about the impact, but there's a reason why NFL teams with their unlimited resources often stay in a hotel between back-to-back West Coast games instead of returning home to the Eastern Time Zone. Those 5-hour flights are a serious grind.

If we got in the SEC, we'd play FSU and UF on a regular basis which no doubt would boost ticket sales and fan interest — not to mention recruiting (speaking of which: SEC Canes recruiting locally and in the South >>> B1G Canes recruiting locally and in the South).

We end up in the B1G and we can kiss the annual series with the Holes goodbye. Our most frequent in-state non-conference opponents are gonna be one or two schools among UCF, USF, FAU and the SWAC pair.

The B1G would/will be much better than the dying ACC is or ever was.

But the SEC would be far better
I disagree with most of that. It is conjecture, hearsay, and opinion. Not factual at all.

You may like the SEC more and be impressed by that image, but OSU has had no problems recruiting South Florida.

Joining whatever conference FSU joins just so we can maintain a rivalry is passive thinking. If both parties want to maintain the rivalry game, it will be done. FSU has played UF for a very long time OOC, they can do the same for Miami. If that’s not a priority for them, well then, bye Felicia.

Ticket sales would be great and maybe even better for the Big Ten. Honestly, arguing this point is silly either way. There are too many factors to determine which actually would be better. Attendance likely goes up either way if we join B1G or SEC. Would you be excited to host Missouri, Kentucky, Arkansas, Miss State, or most of the teams besides the top 4 or so? Same as OSU, Michigan, Penn State, Oregon, USC, and Washington in my opinion.

Also, Miami has a ton of fans in the Northeast part of the country. Maybe even more fans in those areas than the Deep South. Those fans could make the games at Rutgers, Maryland, and PSU.

@DMoney How is it that all the different entities, with likely many people involved, are able to keep this realignment stuff so locked down? Three people can't keep a secret. I find it hard to believe we can go months and months without leaks, given everything that's going on.
