For those Hoya fans, tomorrow morning before the Hoyas take on Colorado:
7 am-9am morning show.
7 am-9am morning show.
It is like arguing with a two year old. At some point you just walk away. That’s not his point
Actually, one of the pioneer all Black teams was FSU’s 1972 team that lost to UCLA in the NCAA championship game. It was a close game. FSU started 5 Black players and there was an undercurrent that maybe the team would be undisciplined. But it was a very disciplined team. It was coached by Hugh Durham. Some of the players I remember were Ron King, Reggie Royals, Otto Petty, Rowland Garrett, Chris Samuels. Hope I’ve got the names right—I’m doing it from memory. No! Gtown was the first team with a black coach to win a title. In addition to that Gtown brought in AND played black players wayyyyy before Michigan trotted out the fab five. In many ways Gtown paved the way for the fab 5 to be even a possibility. Love the fab five but Gtown was revolutionary in perhaps the whitest college in the east coast.
Today was rough....Hoya as well class of ‘91. We blew today but Colorado played flawlessly. Got a 5 star guard coming in and Mutombo’s son so plenty of hope for next year...
I was around there during those days in undergrad about 7 minutes up Foxhall. I remember going to the movies as a freshman in 84 in Tenley and Ewing say on the aisle behind me. I look down and the dude’s leg is going past my seat to the next one.I’m a true Hoya. I have a Georgetown degree. Used to be a big fan during the original John Thompson era, but over the years lost interest. I don’t know why.
I used to go to the old gym on campus in the early ‘80’s and watch the summer Kenner League. The Georgetown guys, Michael Jackson, David Wingate, Reggie Williams would be spread among the various teams. Most of the other guys were from lesser programs, like Howard, UDC, etc. UMD guys had their own league. Lefty Driesell and John Thompson had an ongoing feud.
Congrats to Coach Pat Ewing & the Hoyas! GTown was my fav college basketball team in the 90’s, great to see them pull off the unthinkable considering how rough their season had been up until right before the Big east tourney.
@Hoyacane1620 HoyaSaxa!
Actually, those early ‘80’s years with John T Sr. and the old Big East were fun. Thompson had rivalries with all those Big East coaches...a number of whom were Italian: Massimino, Carnasseca, the guy at Seton Hall....trying to remember the others. Those teams took on the persona of their coaches; GTown with John Thompson and UNLV with Tarkanian
Ewing has got to go. He’s just not a good coach. All of the transfers (Mclung etc.) I know he is Georgetown royalty, but you are what your record says you are. He should be on the hot seat, but he made the run at the Big East tournament which means he is safe for another two years unless he completely tanks next year. I was there during the Esherick years when Georgetown was terrible. I mean look at Juwan Howard at Michigan. In year 2 he has that team in the top 5. Ewing is a CoRch.Today was rough....
I was a student when games were still on campus at McDonough Arena. It was like being in High School watching your team play while sitting on wooden bleacher seats. There was nothing like it. The entire campus lived for basketball season during those years. I can't remember if it was my Jr or SR year when they moved to the Cap Center.
I am still very close to a number of guys I went to Gtown with. It's funny how many of us have ties to the U: wives who graduated, kids who are students or who graduated.
Back in January ‘88 UM and Georgetown basketball played in Miami the night after UM beat Oklahoma for the football NC. I was a Georgetown alum, not a Miami alum, but a huge UM fan since the late ‘50’s. I was wearing my old Miami starter jacket. The Georgetown alumni club for south Florida was there selling Georgetown T-shirts. I bought one and put it on under the Miami starter jacket so I could show loyalty to both teams.Today was rough....

I was a student in those years- beginning in '79... Knew "Sleepy" Floyd well. One of my buddies was a manager for the basketball team and he was always "chaperoning" one of the players. Back then, they kept a close eye on all of them. When Ewing arrived, he lived with a couple of the team managers in an on campus apartment the first year. None of the basketball kids ever lived "off campus". They lived in newly built on- campus apartments.Actually, those early ‘80’s years with John T Sr. and the old Big East were fun. I was older than typical college student since I was actually enrolled in one of the graduate schools and not part of main campus.
Still, I started to follow Hoyas a few years before the Ewing era. Georgetown started to take off in late ‘70’s when Thompson pulled a couple of national recruits from D.C.—Craig Shelton and John Duren. He put them together with Sleepy Floyd from Gastonia, N.C. They started to have some pretty good teams. Up until that time, I guess the dominant program in DC area was Maryland.
Why did coach Thompson and Lefty Driesell fued ?I’m a true Hoya. I have a Georgetown degree. Used to be a big fan during the original John Thompson era, but over the years lost interest. I don’t know why.

I remember the football team in ‘78. Went to one of the games. They played Washington & Lee. Scotty Glacken, a stockbroker in his regular job, was coach. Yes, it was Div. III as I recall. True student athletics, the way it was originally intended to be. I think when NCAA changed classifications some years ago, Georgetown had to make some changes in other sports to qualify for Division I in basketball. Obviously, Georgetown wanted to stay a major program in Division I. I think that meant having to move up in football and start offering scholarships.I was a student in those years- beginning in '79... Knew "Sleepy" Floyd well. GTown is now a member of the Patriot League for football. When I was there, it was barely above a club team - no one cared they were so bad. Now they recruit and it's a scholarship sport. Track was the other big sport when I was a student. They recruited hard for Track & Field and the team was very good. Even lacrosse, now a major sport, was just starting.
Good question. I’ll have to really think about it and try to remember more specifics. I’ll try to see if there are any articles on the internet to refresh my memory. I think it might have gone back to some friction when John Thompson was head coach at St. Anthony’s, a Catholic HS in DC.Why did coach Thompson and Lefty Driesell fued ?
Georgetown vs Maryland star Len Bias would have been a sight to seeGood question. I’ll have to really think about it and try to remember more specifics. Notice that UMD and GU did not play each other during Thompson’s tenure despite the fact they were two major powers in the same metropolitan area.
This sums up a lot of it. Can you see these articles from the Washington Post?
