MEGA Conference Realignment and lawsuits Megathread(Its still personal)

To borrow finance language, B1G is using a diversified portfolio strategy (both in terms of teams and networks), while the SEC is using a blue-chip strategy. Both can win, but longer-term, B1G would seem to be better positioned to weather the ups/downs of market dynamics and also has the ability now to expand their reach far beyond a single geographic region. Long-term, that seems like a more sustainable strategy, not unlike the NFL's.
That's another added benefit that I wasn't thinking about, but I don't think we are just talking about the economic stability of ESPN, but rather ESPN can play hardball b/c they can say 'who else are you going to get to counter what we offer'.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that ESPN is going to offer them $25M per team per year, but just saying that they may not be that motivated to match or exceed the BIG10's deal.

15. Wake Forest - no
With zero knowledge and pure speculation, I expect over the course of the next 10 years it will become the power 4, with four 24 team conferences (Pac, B12, B10, SEC) each featuring four pods of 6. Play the 5 in your pod, 2 from each other pod, one OOC tuneup game or something to get to 12 regular season games. Conferences have a 4 team playoff (best record in each pod), conference champs get one of the auto bids to the national playoff that has expanded to 8. More conference play and less cupcakes, and more playoffs to draw national viewership.

I don't see ACC teams going to the Pac, and I don't see pac teams going to the ACC. I think the Pac survives because it won't get poached to death, and can add some west coast schools like San Diego State, Boise State, UNR etc to get their numbers despite being the doormat conference with the worst media deal.

We have several schools that would be logical adds for the big 10 - Miami, UNC, UVA, ND, and to a lesser extent GT, duke, and Pitt
We have several schools that would be logical adds for the SEC - Miami, FSU, Clemson, UNC, UVA, GT, ND and to a lesser extent Louisville
We have several schools that would be logical adds for the big 12 after the top tier goes to SEC/B10 - VT, NC State, GT, louisville, Pitt, Wake
We have a few schools that I could see consider dropping football and going to a private school basketball conference - Duke, Syracuse, BC, Wake.

So what does this put us at now, $30+ mil in the ACC vs over $70+ mil per school in the B1G? Not sustainable for the ACC, huge gap, especially for how long the contract is.
Plus the B10 will be doing another contract before the ACC‘s is over.

The Atlantic Coast Conference is the never sober billionaire heir who somehow managed to do so much wrong that no legal defense fund could protect them from themselves. They’ll be kicked out of the family, without a single feather from the family’s golden goose.

Not sure whether to respond with the laughing emoji or the crying emoji

Was stated that NBC and ND have negotiated and reached a deal for $60 million per year ... don't know if that is effective as of 2023 or not. Based on the agreement that was reported ND remains independence; ND will have BIG 10 games scheduled ... didn't mention how many of the 7 open per season (5 are committed to the ACC). So NBC is part of the FOX group broadcasting BIG 10 games AND ND games with BIG 10 teams.

If Dan Patrick is correct ... and he stated 2 weeks ago that this scenario was being negotiated and a real possibility ... the next move could be a counter by the SEC to add Clemson / Miami / FSU and possibly one other.
Had not heard that scenario for ND

Guess $10-12 million less than B1G payout could be made up

One of the smart things the BIG10 did with going with multiple partners, besides likely getting more money, they have reduced the bidders for the SEC. Unless Fox, CBS and NBC are willing to bid on the SEC too, the SEC is left only negotiating with ESPN. If you are ESPN and you have no competition, why would you give the SEC the same as the BIG10?

Now maybe those networks would be willing to take on SEC games as well or maybe Amazon/Netflix/Apple get involved, but on the surface it looks like ESPN now has leverage of the SEC.
If the SEC adds members, they'll also move to 9 league games, that adds new inventory to their product they can sell.

Understood, but my point is not whether there is more/less better/worse inventory, but rather that there is likely only one realistic buyer of that inventory. So if ESPN has no realistic competition for the SEC rights, why would they break the bank for the SEC? And if the SEC isn't happy with what ESPN is offering them, who are they going to go to for a better offer?

Well CBS just bought the rights to one B1G game a week, they have plenty of room to get back into the the game with the SEC. And there is always Turner, don't discount their desire to get in the SEC game especially being HQ in Atlanta.

ESPN has to be careful and PROTECT the program base that exists in the SEC. They have no GOR and if a prime SEC program felt they would be better in the BIG 10 .... I am sure the Big 10 would be interested. Last thing ESPN wants to see is programs like Georgia, Tennessee, Auburn bailing to join the BIG 10 due to being under paid by ESPN. To the contrary, according to people like Dan Patrick the SEC move to counter is to add programs like Clemson, Miami and FSU, schedule more meaninful games, and increase the $$$ to the conference to keep up with the BIG 10.

Very good point - I didn't realize CBS was only 1 game a week for BIG10

Good chance Notre Dame exits the ACC and strikes a deal with the Big 10 for something mutually beneficial. Funny thing is AD said it’s a pain in the *** for our teams to get to Tallahassee.

With their new deal ... they don't have to do anything. They like the ACC for basketball and other sports. They want to maintain independence for football ... the big sport with an international fanbase. Their new media deal will give them $65 million a year from NBC ... believe it is renegotiated to commence in 2023 ... and they will be playing more Big 10 games that should be highly viewed games. They can just stay pat.

Now it’s up to $65 million year? Dang they almost got the $70 million.
